Chapter 1 – A Quiet Morning in Ashwood
The village of Ashwood woke each morning beneath a sky painted in lavender and gold. Mist drifted through the towering evergreen trees, and the air carried the sweet scent of wildflowers mixed with the earthy fragrance of damp moss. It was a peaceful place, hidden deep within the realm of Elyndor, where humans and mythical creatures lived in a fragile harmony.
Just beyond the village, unicorns grazed in moonlit meadows untouched by fear. Griffins soared above the mountains, their cries echoing through the valleys. Tiny forest spirits danced among mushrooms after the rain, while could sometimes be seen gliding like distant shadows across the horizon. To the people of Ashwood, such wonders were simply part of everyday life.
Fourteen-year-old Lyra Ashwood loved mornings more than any other time of day.
She hurried outside with a woven basket tucked under one arm, her long chestnut hair swaying behind her. The grass was cool beneath her bare feet as she made her way toward the herb garden beside their small cottage.
"Don't forget the silver mint," a gentle voice called from inside.
"I won't, Mother!" Lyra answered with a smile.
Her mother, Elara, stepped into the doorway carrying a steaming kettle. Her silver-streaked dark hair caught the morning sunlight, and although she looked young, there was an ancient calm in her emerald eyes. Everyone in the village knew Elara as the healer who could soothe fevers, mend broken bones, and even calm frightened beasts with nothing more than her voice.
To Lyra, however, she was simply Mother.
After gathering the herbs, Lyra returned to the cottage, where the comforting aroma of fresh bread filled the room.
"You woke before the birds again," Elara teased.
"They're too slow," Lyra laughed.
They shared breakfast while sunlight spilled across the wooden table. Outside, neighbors greeted one another as merchants prepared their carts and children chased glowing butterflies that shimmered with harmless magic.
"Will we visit the market today?" Lyra asked.
"If we finish delivering medicine first."
Lyra nodded eagerly. She loved helping her mother travel through the village. Every home held a different story, and every family welcomed Elara with gratitude.
As they walked along the winding paths later that morning, villagers waved warmly.
"Good morning, Healer Elara!"
"Morning, Lyra!"
An elderly dwarf blacksmith handed Lyra a polished iron charm shaped like a feather.
"For luck," he said with a grin.
"Thank you!" Lyra replied, slipping it into her pocket.
Far above them, a pair of griffins circled lazily in the bright blue sky.
"They're beautiful," Lyra whispered.
"They are," Elara agreed, though her smile faded for only a heartbeat.
Lyra noticed.
"Is something wrong?"
Elara looked toward the distant forest, where ancient trees stood so closely together that even sunlight struggled to reach the ground.
"It's nothing," she said softly. "Just... promise me something."
"What is it?"
"No matter what happens, never go into the Whispering Woods alone."
Lyra blinked.
"But I've never wanted to."
"I know."
Her mother's expression remained serious.
"Promise me."
"I promise."
Only then did Elara smile again, placing a gentle hand on Lyra's shoulder.
They continued their walk through the village as if nothing had happened, yet Lyra couldn't shake the feeling that her mother had seen—or remembered—something frightening.
That evening, the village gathered around a great bonfire to celebrate the first full moon of summer. Musicians played lively tunes while children laughed and danced beneath strings of glowing lanterns.
Lyra joined her friends, racing through the crowd until she stopped to watch tiny fire spirits swirl above the flames like dancing stars.
She turned to wave at her mother.
Elara stood at the edge of the celebration, smiling warmly—but her eyes were fixed on the dark line of trees beyond the village.
For just a moment, Lyra thought she saw something move between the trunks.
Two golden eyes.
Watching.
When she looked again, they were gone.
A cold breeze swept across the festival, making every lantern flicker at once.
Far away, deep within the Whispering Woods, something ancient had awakened.
