— The Egg —
Coming half way of the desert she saw the sun rising again, it was then that she noticed she had been walking all night long but she had to hurry if she did not want to burn like before so she increased in speed and started running but a mile later she had to stop to take a breather. Judy approached a rock she spotted in the distance, her hand on it she took out the water bottle and drank some but still not much. Getting ready to go looked down at her shoes to check their state and was surprised of what was there. An egg.
A medium sized egg was lying on the ground in a small hole that looked freshly dug. Half of the egg was locking out of the surface and the other half was buried in the sand. At first Judy had no idea what it was until she got closer and touched it. As she removed the egg from its place, she thought of the healthy breakfast she would have soon. She was already salivating, this motivated her to continue faster. Egg in hand, she started running again but soon she thought it to be disturbing her, she then stopped to put the egg in her bag... Something she would soon regret.
Standing there in the middle of an empty dried land with nothing for the next kilometres to come, it was easy to spot things like rocks, cracks on the ground and weird looking bodies lying on the ground.
What? Weird looking bodies on the ground? Well that is what Judy spotted when she stopped to put the egg in the bag, as she got closer, she realized there were in fact two bodies, they were not big but she could tell they were adults of whatever species they were, at least they were not human. They had paws, four of them, with a tail, for the rest, she did not have the time to distinguish them for she saw a big shadow move over them or her but it was still dawn as she looked up in the sky she saw three big flying birds over her head. It was then that she connected the dots.
“could they...”
Judy concluded that the two bodies she saw were surely the egg’s parents who were freshly killed by those three big birds and that her supposed breakfast was already their breakfast before she butted in. The parents died protecting their child and knowing no harm would come to it and her she was taking it straight to danger again.
“they must of gone back since they couldn’t find you anymore... Until I took you out” she wondered hurrying to put the egg in her bag.
“I suggest we make a run for it what do you say buddy”
After managing to close the backpack, she sprinted towards the opposite direction from where she came from to run away from the birds as they made their way towards her. Running for her life with gigantic birds chasing after her and the sun threatening to come out along with unbearable heat Judy was quicker than ever and did the impossible for her.
She reached the end of the desert in a mater of hours, after a while she started seeing trees in front of her, it was a forest!
Hiding behind a tree she took a look at the birds in the sky searching for her but they had to abandon their search for her because the sun was starting to burn them as well. They made high pitched noises then flew up in another way.
Watching them leave she was relieved that she was out of danger and finally had some shade and a bit of wind.
Judy had no idea of what she had done, for her, she ran very fast and it was because she was close to the forest that she reached it. But truth be told, she was still very much far from the end, it would of taken her at least half a day to cover that distance but she had no idea.
Her back against the tree and the bag in her between her arms she slide along it and was now sitting on the fresh ground.
“we finally made it” she said in between breaths, she was so tired she could not move. Luckily for her, there was a small cave a little further down the forest and she decided to rest there for a while but she ended up sleeping there.
Upon waking up Judy was a bit lost but then she remembered everything that had happened went to her bag and opened it to see the egg still there.
“it’s just you and me now buddy” she whispered with relief evident in her voice.
Walking through the forest, she had no idea where she was going, she was lost.
“he said they were in a forest, but how do I know which one it is” Judy wondered.
After roaming between the trees for a while she realized she had been making circles all this time!
“what th- oh no this is not possible” Judy crumble on the ground in desperation. Sitting on the ground she pondered about what to do in this situation.
Time had passed and she still did not find any solution, she removed the backpack from her back and opened it to take some bread to eat. Holding the egg she found in her hand she noticed it had some blue dots on it with three raindrop like shape coloured in red in the middle of the egg. She knew what she had to do to find her way around this forest!
In town Lady Mcrell now cosy in her home felt uncomfortable and outraged with what the Father had said. Her, possessed? Yeah right and what else? It has never been heard of since the last witch hunt and that was decades ago!
True, her actual behaviour was very much different from before but it was only because she had grown to like that girl’s company so was it not normal for her to be worried if something had happened to her? Alright, maybe she exaggerated a little bit, but everyone knew her for that so what’s the problem? In addition to that, it was only towards her, she had not changed for any body else. Judy had actually been the first and only person to have been nice to her, listened and believed in her, even if it had been a short while it was a precious feeling. No one knew but Mcrell was a big sentimentalist. So how could she be possessed, no one in town just knew the real her is all. Things in this town were becoming more and more strange. Like that arrogant little boy thinking he is prince of the town just because his father is the mayor!
“come to think of it, I have met him quite a lot in my search with Judy! That awful brat!” the old lady said to no one in particular. Saying that out loud she realised something, was he following her? No... That sounds too much stretched out “he was around Judy’s house before me, that can’t be it” thinking about, Mcrell remembered he had told her he had seen the girl accompanying him off home but Mcrell did not remember any neighbouring house there except Judy’s and her neighbours the Humpers and the next ones were a couple of miles away... If that could even be considered neighbours any more. But then again, if he did not see the girl off, what was he there for? Was he also looking for Judy? And if so, why?
All these unanswered questions gave the poor lady a headache and she decided to end the day with some relaxation, she deserved it after the day not to say week she had!
After making herself a cup of tea, she thought why not look for something to read in her husband’s book collection, there might be something about possession who knows! That’s when she realised she actually knew nothing about it. How, when and why did it occur? Is it simple or difficult? Is the person conscious? Are they being controlled? And most importantly, how do you get free?
She just wondered, did the Father just assume she was possessed just because she worried a little girl went missing? Does that mean she was not really possessed in reality?
“I have to find out what is happening” she thought going towards the book shelf and looking up to down for something close to what she was looking for.
“hhmmm” her fingers under her chin with eyes browsing through the books she didn’t find anything interesting not like she would actually know if she found what she was looking for because most of the books there were in foreign language. Her husband’s book never interested her anyway and she didn’t even know where he got them, she just knew he loved books and would come home from work every day with a new nook in his hand.
Reaching all the way down, Mcrell was attracted by a colourful thick book.
“what do we have here?” the old lady reached for the book and when she got it out read. “Dreamy Lane ?” ” what kind of title is this?” she asked taking a second look at the book, she realised it was a picture book. “I didn’t know you liked picture books honey” she said to no one in particular. Searching for the author, she just found the letter D and nothing more was written on the book, she found it strange but still wanted to read it. .
“why don’t I read this one. It looks easy to read” impatiently going back to the sofa with the book in hand, a cup of steamy tea and some cookies, Mcrell, got ready for a reading night.
