Chapter 10 The fight Now that he is angry he can’t sleep.... great! Carmel finishes up in the shower, she looks in the mirror and thinks she looks bedraggled but he won’t notice with the lights out. She is feeling tired and can’t wait to jump into bed next to him and snuggle into him like they used to. She always felt so safe snuggled into him with his arms wrapped around her warming her and holding her tight. With a quick wipe of the floor and a comb of her hair she turns the light out and heads for the double bed. She gets in, but the bed is empty and cold. She feels around for Fred but his side of the bed is ice cold and there is no sign of him. Carmel lifts her head and squints in the dark to see. Her eyes are still adjusting to the dark after being in the bright bathroom. He’s not sitting in any of the chairs, where is he? Has he left the room? She turns to switch on the lamp next to the bed. She hears a groan from the direction of the single bed. She is surprised to see he is laying in the single bed.  Furious, Carmel gets up and walks over to him. Pulls the pillow from underneath his head and hits him right in the face with it. He turns to her and before she can hit him again he grabs the pillow from her and angrily says, “what the hell are you doing?” Carmel aggressively replies, “what the hell am I doing?” She spits at him rhetorically.  “What the hell are you doing?”  Fred turns and half sits up, annoyance in his face. Carmel doesn’t give him time to answer, she hisses, “what the hell are you doing? What is this?  Some sort of sick joke, have you been leading me on this whole time. You make me have s*x with you and now you sleep separately?”  “Is this some kind of sick game to you?”  Fred looks confused. “Tell me now, are you doing this to get back at me for years passed?” “Do you really think it’s a good idea to be playing with my feelings like this?”, she screams.  Fred grabs her arm as she tries to swipe at his face. He says in a calm tone, “ what are you talking about?”  “you couldn’t wait to get away from me, you got in the shower so quickly after we.... had sex.” He says with harshness in his voice.  Carmel is still reeling with anger but his calm tone reminds her they are in a hotel and it is the wee hours of the morning, so she had better lower her voice.  She takes a deep breath and says, “ I want my clothes now.” “I want to leave now please.”  Fred gets up and walks over to the phone to call reception to ask for Carmel’s clothes to be sent up right away.  As he lifts the receiver, Carmel says, “ I wasn’t trying to get away from you by the way, I have to wash after s*x because I’m allergic to latex from the condom!” With tears straining and stinging her eyes, threatening to flow in rivers if she doesn’t hold them back.  Fred drops the phone and turns to face Carmel. “What did you say?”, Carmel looks up with regret on her face for thinking he felt for her as much as she thought he did. Oh what a fool she was. All he wanted was to have his way with her and then send her packing. She knows she hurt him all those years ago, but really they were both just kids back then, she didn’t know what she was doing. But to do this now, it’s just plain cruel.  “I said!.....I’m allergic to condoms! I have to wash straight after or I get terrible pain and sometimes suffer from uti’s because of the latex.” Fred walks back to Carmel and tries to take her hand, he realises he misunderstood the situation and knows that he is at fault. Partly he wishes he hadn’t been so darn hot headed and jumped to the conclusion so quickly and another part of him was rejoicing because, now he knew that she was, as-in to him, as he was to her.   Carmel pulls her hand away in disgust, “ why are you smiling, you are sick, do you know that?”  Fred can’t help but smile ear to ear and he starts laughing at the absurdity of it all. Not the best reaction in Carmel’s eyes. She is fuming, and when she is angry she cries. She bursts into tears, “stop it! It’s not funny! You are cruel! Don’t touch me!” He grabs her by the arms and fights through her protesting, flailing arm attack. He pulls her to him, still laughing, he pins her to him and manages to squeeze out, “I’m sorry... haha I’m sorry. When you went to shower, I saw it as, you had got what you wanted from me and didn’t care about my feelings.” “I thought you couldn’t wait to wash all trace of me from your body. That’s what I thought.” Haha he can’t stop laughing, “Im sorry. I miss understood. Forgive me!” He finally stops laughing and looks Carmel in the eyes. “Let’s forget about all this and go back to bed. I want to hold you all night.” He says in a quiet, soft voice. “Please forgive my stupidity.” Carmel stops fighting his embrace, looks him in the eye to make sure that he is being genuine and that it’s not just another cruel joke.  He leans in and kisses her ever so gently. Carmel calms completely and melts into his embrace. They spoon for the rest of what’s left of the dark hours of the morning. Soon it will be light and they will have another glorious day together.
