Chapter Three: No Rescue

868 Words
CLARA "You knew." The words leave my mouth before I can stop them. My voice is cold. Flat. It does not sound like me. Arthur stands slowly. His hands grip the edge of the table. His knuckles are white. He looks at me like he is seeing a stranger. Maybe he is. Maybe the girl who left this morning is gone. Maybe she died somewhere between the interview and this kitchen. "Clara" "You knew." He swallows. His throat moves. He is searching for words that do not exist. "I didn't know he'd contact you." "Who?" My father's silence is my answer. It hangs between us like smoke. I see it in his eyes. I see it in the way he cannot hold my gaze. I see it in the way his hands shake. "Julian." Mr. Alex rises from his chair. The wood scrapes against the floor. The sound is sharp. It cuts through the tension. "This isn't the conversation to have tonight." I turned on him. My eyes are hard. My voice cuts. "Then when is?" He looks at me. His face is careful. Controlled. "When you're safe." I laugh. It is bitter. Hollow. It echoes off the yellowed walls. "Safe?" I held up the contract. The paper trembles in my hand. "You're arranging my marriage to a billionaire whose uncle just threatened me, and you're telling me I'm safe?" Alex's jaw tightens. He does not look away. "Julian doesn't make empty threats." "Then why marry me into his family?" "Because Elias is not Julian." I stare at him. The words do not make sense. "What's the difference?" Alex looks toward the window. The glass is dark. The street is empty. The hollows are silent. "Elias doesn't know everything." "Everything about what?" He does not answer. He just stands there, silent and careful and guilty. It irritates me more than anything. More than the contract. More than marriage. More than the threats. "You're all talking around me." Arthur steps forward. His face is broken. His eyes are wet. "Because the less you know, the safer you are." My eyes harden. "I hate that sentence." "I know." He reaches for my hand. I almost pulled away. Almost. But I do not. I let him take it. His fingers are trembling. Cold. Weak. "Dad..." He looks older tonight. Much older. The lines on his face are deeper. The light in his eyes is dimmer. "I failed you." I swallow. The words stick in my throat. "You didn't fail me." "I did." "No." "I lost every business I touched. I buried your mother. I left you with debt." "You loved us." He looks at me. His eyes are wet. "Love doesn't pay creditors." I look away. His words hit me like a blow. Love does not pay creditors. Love does not stop the debt collectors. Love does not save my mother. Love does not save me. My mother's voice comes back to me. Her words echo in my head. Sad people wear gray. I look down at my red blouse. "I'll do it." Arthur stares at me. His face goes pale. "What?" "I'll marry him." "No." "You said we have no other choice." "I didn't mean" "You signed." He looks broken. His face crumbles. I have just stabbed him with the truth. "I'll survive." Mr. Alex watches me carefully. He is measuring me. He is trying to see if I am strong enough. "You understand what you're agreeing to?" I smile. There is no warmth in it. "No. But I'll learn." Something shifts in his expression. Almost approval. Almost fear. He stands. His chair scrapes against the floor. "Then you should know one thing." I wait. "Elias didn't ask for this marriage." My fingers tighten around the contract. "What?" "Julian arranged it." "But Elias agreed." "Yes." "Why?" Alex looks toward the door. "Because Elias has spent twenty-five years obeying his uncle." I feel cold. Twenty-five years. A billionaire CEO. And he obeys his uncle. "Why?" He does not answer. He walks away. His footsteps echo. The door opens. It closes. He is gone. I remain at the table. I look at my father's signature. Arthur Vance. Scrawled. Desperate. I look at the name printed at the bottom. ELIAS THORNE. I do not know what kind of man he is. But I know one thing. If everyone expects me to be a pawn, I will become the kind of pawn that learns how to move the king. I look at my father. His face is broken. His eyes are wet. "Dad." He looks up. "I will do this. I will marry him. I will save this family. But I am doing it for Mama. I am doing it for you. I am doing it for myself." He nods. He cannot speak. I walk to my room. I close the door. I sink onto the bed. I do not cry. I never cry. But something cracks inside me. Something I cannot name. I am engaged. To Elias Thorne. A stranger who obeys his uncle. A man who does not know I am his bride. I will survive. I will become the kind of pawn that learns how to move the king. I promise.
