What's it called when you're invisible to everyone except the one man who can't stop watching you?

That's Clara Vance for you. A girl from The Hollows with a worn blazer and a desperate hope. She walked into Cross Industries looking for a job. She walked out as the future wife of Elias Thorne cold, untouchable, and drowning in secrets she doesn't know.

He thinks she's quiet. He thinks she's dumb. He thinks she's just another pawn in his uncle's twisted game.

He's wrong.

She watches. She remembers. She waits. She plays the silent wife while secretly building a case to destroy his uncle and take control of everything.

She doesn't expect to fall in love with her enemy.

He doesn't expect to love the woman he's forced to keep at a distance.

They say a silent woman is a patient one. And patience, in a house of wolves, is the only weapon that never dulls.

He thought he was buying a wife. He thought he was getting a pawn. He had no idea she was about to become his queen.

The contract said she was his. But she's about to show him what happens when the invisible wife becomes invincible.

Chapter One: The Girl in the Worn Blazer
CLARA I have exactly one thousand naira in my purse when I walk into Cross Industries. It is not enough for lunch. It is not enough for the bus home. But it is enough to buy me one more chance. I look up at the tower rising above me. Glass. Steel. Money. Everything The Hollows is not. The Cross Industries building pierces the morning sky, its upper floors disappearing into a thin layer of clouds. People in expensive suits hurry through the revolving doors, carrying phones that probably cost more than everything I own. I look down at my blazer. The cuffs are faded. One button has been replaced with a black one that does not match the others. My mother sewed it herself. Her hands shake now. They shake too much to hold a needle. But back then, her hands were steady. She sewed that button on and said, "Clara, wear red lipstick. Sad people wear gray." So I have put on red lipstick. I square my shoulders and walk inside. The lobby is vast. Marble floors stretch beneath my feet, polished to a mirror shine. Chrome elevators line the walls like soldiers. A ceiling so high it disappears into shadows above me. People pass me without looking. They do not see me. I am invisible. Good. Easier to watch when no one sees you. The receptionist barely glances up. She has brown hair, bright like a flame. Her name tag says Ivy. She smiles. It is the first smile I have seen all morning. "Interview?" she asks. "Yes," I say. "Name?" "Clara Vance." Her fingers move across the keyboard. "Mr. Thorne is expecting you. Take the elevator to the Twenty-fourth floor. His office is at the end of the hall." "Thank you." "Good luck," she says. Her eyes are warm. Genuine. I am not used to kindness. I walk toward the elevators. My palms are sweating. I hate that. Sweating makes people think you are nervous. Nervous people are easy to manipulate. I have learned never to let people know when I am afraid. The elevator doors open. I step inside. Twenty-four. As the numbers climb, I take one slow breath. You are not here to beg. You are here to work. The doors open onto a corridor of glass and steel. I walk to the end. A door waits for me. Heavy. Dark wood. Gold handle. I knocked. A voice says, "Come in." I push the door open. The office is enormous. Floor-to-ceiling windows show the entire city spread below me like a map. The skyline stretches for miles, glass towers, steel bridges, the gray smear of The Hollows in the distance. Everything looks small from up here. Everything looks insignificant. Up here, you are untouchable. The man behind the desk does not look up. "Sit," he says. His voice is low. Cold. I sit. The chair swallows me. For several seconds, there is only the sound of paper turning. Then he looks at me. Pale gray eyes. Dark hair. A face carved into severe angles. He looks younger than the newspapers make him seem. And far more dangerous. Elias Thorne. CEO of Cross Industries. Thirty-four. Billionaire. The man whose name appears on buildings, magazines, financial reports, and whispered conversations. He studies my résumé. His eyes move across the page. He does not rush. He is not trying to impress me. He is not trying to intimidate me. He is simply reading. "Your previous employer says you have no experience in corporate analysis," he says. "I do not," I say. "Yet you applied for the position." "Yes." "Why?" I look directly into his eyes. "Because I can learn." His eyebrow lifts slightly. "That is what everyone says." "Then ask me something I cannot answer." For the first time, he looks interested. He pushes a document across the desk. "Tell me what is wrong with this projection." I picked it up. I read it. The numbers blur. My heart pounds. I hold myself together. I breathe. Three minutes later, I looked up. "The numbers are too optimistic," I say. "Why?" "Because you are calculating growth from the previous quarter without accounting for the supply disruption." Elias stares at me. I will continue. "And whoever prepared this assumed the disruption would last six weeks." I tap the page. "That is wrong." "How long?" he asks. "Four months." "How do you know?" "Because your supplier's parent company announced a restructuring yesterday." Silence. Elias leans back. His pale gray eyes study me. He is trying to figure me out. I can see it in his eyes. He is watching me. Just like I am watching him. "You researched us," he says. "I researched the company I wanted to work for." Something almost like amusement crosses his face. Almost. He picks up his phone. "Get her an employee badge," he says. I blink. "Does that mean" "You are hired." I stand. "Thank you." Elias looks at me again. This time, he does not look at my résumé. He looks at me. As though he has just noticed something he cannot explain. Something that makes him pause. I turn toward the door. "Miss Vance," he says. I stop. "Yes?" "Don't let anyone here convince you that being quiet means you are stupid." My fingers tighten around my bag. "I won't." I walk out. I step into the elevator. My heart is pounding. My hands are shaking. I got the job. I got the job. I press my hand against my chest. I breathe. I count. One, two, three, four, five. In. Out. In. Out. I got the job. But that is just the first step. The first step out of The Hollows. The first step away from the debt and the grief and the endless weight of my father's failure. I walk home. The streets change as I move. Glass towers give way to brick buildings. Brick buildings give way to crumbling concrete. The Hollows wait for me. It is patient. I am hungry. I open the front door. The house smells like medicine and regret. My mother's cough is faint from the back room. My father is in the kitchen. There is a piece of paper on the table. Mr. Alex is sitting across from him. He is our neighbor. He has known my family for years. But today, his face is different. Careful. Guilty. He does not look me in the eye. My father looks up. His eyes are wet. "Clara," he says. "Sit down." I do not sit. "What is that?" I ask. Mr. Alex moves the paper toward me. "It is a marriage contract," he says. I freeze. My blood runs cold. "To Elias Thorne," Mr. Alex says. "The billionaire. The man who owns Cross Industries." I stare at him. I stare at my father. I stare at the paper. I cannot breathe. My heart pounds in my chest. My hands tremble. I look at the contract. I read the words. Debts paid. Mother treated. House ke pt. Marriage binding for one year. My first day at Cross Industries has begun. I do not know that before the week is over, I will be wearing its CEO's wedding ring.
