The voices of the Alphas seated around me blurred into background noise. Treaty documents were splayed across the table, untouched.
I tried to focus, forcing my eyes to skim the terms, but each word blurred. My mind wandered to something I couldn’t bring myself to say aloud -- Charlotte.
The tension in the air was suffocating. Important negotiations were at stake, weeks of coordinated effort, allies seeking reassurance. But my thoughts were far away. Too far.
The sharp ring of my phone broke through the haze. I grabbed it without thinking, my heart racing for reasons I didn’t fully understand. Crystal’s name lit up the screen.
