CHAPTER ONE - The Last Man I Expected
Cassie Baron stepped out of the car slowly, her eyes lifting toward the massive mansion standing before her. It looked less like a home and more like something out of a billionaire magazine—three floors of glass windows, marble pillars, and an enormous fountain in the centre of the driveway. She swallowed. Her mother wasn’t joking when she said her new husband was rich. “Cassie, honey, come on!” her mother called excitedly from the front steps. Cassie grabbed the handle of her suitcase and forced herself forward. This was going to be her home now. The thought felt strange. Her whole life had been small apartments and quiet neighbourhoods. Now she was standing in front of a place that looked like it belonged to royalty. The front doors opened before they even reached them. Two housemaids greeted them politely and quickly took Cassie’s suitcase. Cassie stepped inside and froze. Everything was white marble and gold. A grand staircase curved toward the second floor like something from a movie. “Do you like it?” her mother asked, practically glowing. Cassie forced a smile. “It’s… big.” Her mother laughed nervously. “You’ll get used to it.” Footsteps echoed from the hallway. A tall man in his late fifties appeared, wearing an expensive dark suit and a warm smile. “Welcome home,” he said kindly and embraced Cassie’s mom warmly. Cassie already knew who he was. Mr Walton Dinker She had only met him once before, at dinner, and had heard a lot from what mom had been telling her, and now he was officially her stepfather. Her mother’s new husband. He walked over and embraced Cassie. “And this must be Cassie.” Cassie nodded politely, a smile that made Mr Walton feel very much accepted. “It’s nice to meet you, sir.” “None of that,” he said warmly. “You’re family now.” Cassie tried to relax. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all. Mr Walton suddenly glanced toward the staircase. “Ronald!” he called. Cassie barely paid attention at first. Until she heard the slow sound of footsteps coming down the stairs. It was heavy and confident. For some reason, a strange feeling crawled up her spine. And Cassie looked up, the moment she did…her entire body went still. “No…No way” Cassie said to herself in shock. Standing halfway down the staircase was a man she had encountered before but barely knew. He was tall, light-skinned, with broad shoulders, Dark hair slightly messy, a sharp jawline and those cold, piercing eyes she would recognise anywhere. His name is Ronald Dinker. The same man she met six months ago. The same arrogant stranger she argued with all night and slightly got along with later on. The same man she ended up spending one reckless night with before he disappeared without a word the next morning. Cassie’s heart slammed violently against her chest. This couldn’t be real. Then his eyes shifted to Cassie’s mother. A polite but distant nod followed. “Mrs Baron. Welcome.” Cassie’s mother smiled warmly, clearly pleased. “Please, call me Elena,” she said kindly. “We’re family now.” Ronald gave a small nod, though his expression didn’t change much. “Of course.”, his gaze slowly moving over to Cassie Recognition flashed in his eyes. For a brief second, surprise crossed his expression. Then it disappeared. Replaced with a faint, dangerous smirk. “Oh God”, Cassie said to herself from his expression knowing what happened. He remembered. Cassie felt heat rush into her face. Mr Walton smiled proudly, completely unaware of the tension filling the room. “Cassie,” he said cheerfully, “this is my son.” Cassie’s stomach dropped. “My son, Ronald.” The words echoed in her head like thunder. She couldn’t believe that she would be calling this man in front of her family. Ronald slipped his hands casually into his pockets, watching her like a predator observing its prey. His voice was calm when he finally spoke. “Cassie Baron or should I say Cassie Dinker.” He said with a dangerous smile on his face. “Welcome Home”. Her name rolled slowly off his tongue, like he was tasting it. Cassie clenched her fists. “Seems you too had already met each other before this?” Mr Walton asked, confused. Cassie opened her mouth to respond…..but Ronald spoke first. “Yes.”His eyes locked onto hers.“We’ve met. a warning hid behind his words. Cassie’s pulse raced. He wasn’t going to say anything about that night. Because she definitely wasn’t. Mr Walton chuckled, clearly relieved. “Well, that makes things easier! You two should get along perfectly.” Cassie almost laughed at the irony. Get along?, Not a chance. Ronald stepped closer, too close, Cassie could smell the faint scent of his cologne. Her stomach twisted with memories she wished she could erase. His voice dropped so low only she could hear. “Funny,” he murmured. Cassie stiffened. “I didn’t expect my one-night mistake to suddenly move into my house.” Her eyes snapped up to his. Anger flared instantly. “A mistake?” she whispered sharply. Ronald’s smirk deepened. “Wasn’t it?” Cassie felt heat rush through her veins. This man dared to say that “Ronald,” Mr Walton said suddenly, interrupting them. “Show Cassie around the house.” Cassie immediately shook her head. “That’s really not necessary—” “There are maids for that,” Ronald interrupted calmly. Mr Walton frowned slightly. Ronald adjusted the cuff of his sleeve casually. “I have some important business to catch up on Dad” His gaze flicked briefly back to Cassie.“Cassie will be taken care of.” Mr Walton sighed but nodded. “Sure, Duty calls” Ronald simply gave a small shrug. Then he turned and started walking toward the door. But just before leaving…he paused beside Cassie, his voice dropped low again. “So now you’re my step-sister.” Cassie held her breath. Ronald leaned slightly closer. “But don’t worry.” A faint smile touched his lips,“Our little secret…”,His fingers briefly brushed her wrist. “…stays between us.” Cassie quickly pulled her hand back. Ronald straightened as if nothing had happened, then he walked out the door. Leaving Cassie standing there with her racing heart. Living here was going to be a nightmare. Because the one man she needed to stay away from the most… was now her stepbrother. And judging by the dangerous look in Ronald Dinker’s eyes… avoiding him was going to be impossible.
