Chapter 22

1730 Words
I felt myself dozing off, not because I felt sleepy but because the cartoon was boring. I looked over at Dax and he was staring at the tv like a robot programmed to watch the tv. I checked Kade and he was still awake. “Kade, it’s past your bedtime time to go to bed,” I said, “mommy can I finish this cartoon first?” He said with a pleading tone, “No, it’s already past your bedtime honey, so you have to sleep now” I said sternly, I didn’t want him to grow up normalizing late sleeping. He got up and followed me upstairs. I knew I was still coming downstairs the moment he slept. I needed to watch a film, it’s been so long, ‘maybe I could watch it with Dax too’ I thought to myself with a smile, goodness knows why. We got to the room and lay down on the bed, I was rubbing his back and singing him a lullaby, “Twinkle twinkle little star” I sang, I kept singing and after a long while of singing various songs, he finally slept. I slowly went out of the room and bumped into Dax. “You have a nice voice, very smooth,” he said, “Thank you,” I said with a smile before silence reigned over us and I didn’t know what to say to start a conversation. “So are you going downstairs,” I asked, “Are you?” He asked back. “Yes I am, are you coming?” I replied, “Yeah I’ll be down in a minute” he answered and I nodded. I saw him go into his room and he shut the door. I wanted to see what he was doing but it was wrong and I didn’t want to be caught snooping which would ruin whatever I had with him by being nosy. I found my feet walking towards the door and I turned back, ‘mind your business’ I said to myself and went downstairs. I was going down when I heard Dax open the door to his room. ‘He couldn’t see me here, I should have been downstairs in the living room since I thought to myself and ran downstairs. I got to the living room and dropped on the couch. I tried to act natural and composed but I hadn’t changed the tv channel so I pretended to be in deep thought and pretend not to realize that Dax had come downstairs. “Are you okay?” Dax's deep voice echoed in the room and I pretended to be shaken when he said, “I’m fine” I said and he sat down next to me. “Are you still thinking about your research?” He asked me, “No no no, I was just waiting for you to come down” I replied and he nodded, “oh okay”. “Want to watch a film with me?” I asked shyly and he nodded, “sure” he replied. I took the remote and tried to change the channel but I didn’t know the number to press to change the channel that we could watch, “erm.. can you change it to the movies channel?” I asked, “o don’t actually know, the time I charged the channel for Kade I just pressed random numbers, and lucky for me it was the kid's channel” he replied and I chuckled. “Time to press random numbers,” I said, “no I could just call the butler, he should know” he replied and called the butler. I told the butler what we wanted to watch and he changed it to the exact channel. “Thank you,” I said and he gave a small bow and left. “Why do they always bow?” I said thinking I said it to myself but I said it out loud. “ it’s a sign of respect” he replied and I thought it wasn’t necessary. “But I’m not the master of the house, a simple you’re welcome would be enough respect though” I replied and he seemed confused. “It’s normal around here since I’m the alpha” he replied, “but I don’t have a position here so they don't need to bow to me” I answered back and I was shocked with myself. When did I get the nerves to keep retorting and exchanging words with an alpha, we were familiar but wouldn’t it be disrespectful? And overall, I was arguing with him. “They know that since you’re in my house you automatically need to be treated with respect,” he said calmly as if I hadn’t been arguing with him. I sighed. “Okay then” I replied trying not to argue more about it. We both turned our heads to the TV. We didn’t even notice that the movie had started already. It had already been fifteen movies, though there hadn’t been many scenes so we could still understand and interpret the situations in the movie. It was an action movie with shootings and escapes, people running away, bombings, and many other things I see in action movies. But it seemed like the romance was involved too since the male lead was in love with the female lead but didn’t tell her. The movie was a fictional action movie, it was about aliens which were robots that came to earth trying to take over humans but they waged a war and the female lead found a way to kill the aliens. What she dyed motivated me too, that I could find a cure for the disease. 40 minutes into the movie, a bullet pierced through the male lead's chest and the female lead carried him to safety. She was trying to treat his wounds but it looked like he would soon die and she started crying. The scene was so emotional that I started crying and snuffling too. I looked over to Dax to see him staring at me confused. “Why are you crying?” He asked, “this scene is so emotional,” I said sniffling, “but it’s not like he’s going to die,” he said, “how do you know?” I asked, “it was just a bullet, he’s not going to die, and it’s just a movie so please stop crying, happiness suits you more,” he said. “Oh okay,” I said plainly but inside I felt tons of butterflies. I continued watching the movie and the male lead didn’t even die, Dax was right. The male lead confessed his feelings and they kissed, even made out. The humans won the war eventually and the aliens were killed, even the male and female lead got married but in the end, there was a cliffhanger. A small alien was in a secluded area on earth and was growing there without the humans knowing and it ended. “Wow, what a great movie,” I said, “it wasn’t too bad but the scenes couldn’t even happen in real life,” Dax said, “that’s why it’s a fictional and action movie mixed with a little romance” I replied and he just stared at me blankly. I checked the time and it was almost 1 am. “Oh my gosh it’s really late, I’m not even sleepy yet,” I said, “you’ve never slept this late?” Dax asked, “oh I have, even later” I replied. “Okay,” Dax replied. I stretched a bit and went into the kitchen, all the maids were asleep so I opened the fridge and poured two glasses of milk. I brought them to the living room, “milk?” I said with a raised eyebrow and he nodded. I handed it over to him and over my hands touched, I felt a spark and froze before I gained my composure and cleared my throat. I sat down and sipped my glass of milk, it was chilled too. “So are you familiar with anyone at the hospital yet?” Dax asked and my mind immediately called out Lina. “Yes, I have, only one thought I replied, “mm,” he said. “She is really sweet too, very brave and confident” I added, “you hold her in high esteem for someone you just met,” he said, “She behaves and appears like that, a very classy woman,” I said and he nodded. “She’s been really good help to me anytime I was at the hospital too” I added with a smile. “Help? What do you mean?” He asked, “she knows about the disease and how I was under pressure too, she always tried to calm me down and encourage me,” I said, “okay but don’t you think it’s too early to trust her” he added with a questionable expression. “My instinct tells me I can trust her and I trust in instinct too,” I said and he nodded. I thought about Lina, she had been a good friend to me and one of the first friends I’ve made since I moved here. She was there to encourage me, and her funny moments which made me chuckle. I remembered that girl I met at the hospital too, very weird and I laughed. “What’s so funny?” Dax asked, “I remember treating a girl at the hospital and weirdly she knew about my situation and she told me to believe in myself that I could do it, strange right?” I said and Dax thought about it. “Very strange” he replied. “Maybe she’s psychic” I assumed, “maybe” he replied and I finished my glass of milk. I checked the time, it was already past twelve. I needed to sleep since I would wake up early tomorrow. “Good night,” I said and realized we were in the morning already, “good morning too,” I said with a small smile, “good night and morning too,” he said with a grin. I noticed him lingering a bit more than necessary, before he turned to leave.
