The first attempt does not complete. He taps the terminal once, then again, following the on-screen instruction exactly. The interface responds both times, registering input, acknowledging receipt. The loading indicator appears, rotates once, then resets to idle. No message remains. He waits before trying again. Waiting is often interpreted as compliance. On the third attempt, the terminal processes longer than before. The indicator rotates twice. A background animation flickers, then stabilizes. The screen clears. Behind him, the line adjusts. Not impatient. Simply responsive. Someone steps into the adjacent lane, where the terminal accepts their input immediately. A confirmation tone sounds. The system has redistributed load. He steps aside without prompting. Across the block, a delivery drone lowers, pauses, then rises again. Its route updates mid-air. The adjustment is logged as weather-related. Wind variance falls within model expectations. On the sidewalk, pedestrian signals extend their cycles slightly. The change improves aggregate flow. Individuals do not notice the difference unless they are counting seconds. He crosses when permitted. The signal does not shorten for him. At a public restroom, access panels authenticate users in sequence. He waits. The panel lights briefly, then dims. The door opens anyway, unassigned. Inside, the lighting remains at default. No profile loads. The facility logs usage without attribution. Later, he attempts to connect to a shared workspace. Seats are available. The occupancy display confirms it. When he sits, the desk does not activate. Power remains off. Nearby stations light up as others arrive. He relocates. The result is the same. A building notice scrolls across a wall display: Systems performing within updated parameters. Below it, a smaller line: Minor inconsistencies corrected automatically. The language is precise. Reassuring. Throughout the afternoon, similar moments accumulate. Nothing blocks him outright. Nothing denies him access. Each interaction completes just enough to move past, but not enough to register. The city does not push him away. It adjusts around him. Each recalibration tightens thresholds by imperceptible degrees. Each adjustment improves overall performance. The margin for unregistered interaction narrows. By evening, the friction has formed a pattern—not one he can articulate, but one he must accommodate. He plans routes that avoid terminals. He times movements to minimize pauses. He learns where not to stand. The system learns too. Not about him. About how to operate with fewer exceptions. The metrics reflect improvement. And because the improvements are real, there is no reason to reconsider what was excluded to achieve them.
