Chapter 8 — Low-Impact

The morning resolves without interruption.
Transit schedules align more tightly than the week before. Wait times fall within optimal bands. Adaptive routing completes ahead of forecast. The city registers a marginal gain in efficiency and locks it in.
He moves through it with less resistance.
Doors open on time. Signals change when expected. Interfaces respond quickly, provided he does not linger. When he does not pause, when he does not repeat, the system accommodates him cleanly.
It is only when he stops that things fail to settle.
He learns this without naming it.
At intersections, he crosses early, staying within the densest part of the flow. The signals extend just enough. He keeps pace and arrives where others do. Nothing delays him because nothing needs to adjust.
In shared spaces, he chooses seats already activated by someone else. Residual power remains. Screens stay lit. The system maintains continuity rather than initiating it.
This works.
The city prefers continuity.
Service counters process faster now. Fewer prompts. Fewer checks. Cases resolve in fewer steps. The language on public displays reflects the improvement: Streamlined access. Reduced friction. Optimized experience.
He reads none of it.
At midday, a building announces an update—automatic, pre-approved. Minor redundancies removed. Idle checks eliminated. User pathways simplified.
The announcement is brief. The effect is lasting.
He notices that he is no longer required to step aside. Not because he is recognized, but because the system no longer needs to separate him from the flow. It simply does not distinguish.
When he stands still, people pass through the space he occupies. Density models absorb him as background. Occupancy remains accurate enough.
In the afternoon, he waits on a bench that no longer logs seating events individually. The system stopped tracking them earlier in the week. Aggregate data was sufficient.
No one comes to sit beside him. No one avoids him either.
He is not ignored. He is unaddressed.
By evening, the city feels easier to move through than it has in months. Fewer pauses. Fewer corrections. Fewer moments where anything must be noticed.
The system has learned that smoother operation requires fewer points of engagement.
And so it engages less.
He reaches his destination without incident. No delays. No friction. No trace.
The day closes cleanly.
In removing pressure, the city has not made space for him.
It has made him unnecessary to account for.
