Beat 3 — System Continues

254 Words
The line advances. The person behind him steps into the marked zone. The scanner activates, confirms, releases. A package is dispensed. A status light shifts from idle to complete. Throughput remains within projected range. No one pauses to ask what happened before. There is no “before” for the system to reference. Each interaction is isolated, evaluated, and closed. The man stands a short distance from the terminal, outside the designated flow. From here, he can see the process working as intended. Faces are scanned. Indicators register. Records attach. Each person leaves carrying proof of participation. Overhead, a display updates eligibility metrics in real time. The categories are clear. The fields are full. The logic is intact. Security does not intervene. There is no alert associated with his presence. He occupies space, but not a state that requires management. A supervisor walks past, eyes on a handheld dashboard. The man does not appear on it—not as a warning, not as an omission. He is not filtered out. He was never filtered in. A reminder scrolls across the terminal network: Maintain flow. Avoid unnecessary engagement. The instruction is followed automatically. He realizes then that nothing is going to stop. Not for clarification. Not for fairness. Not even for verification. The system has already moved on to the next valid signal. What remains is not conflict, but displacement— a body standing in a process that has no position for it. And because the process is still functioning, there is nothing to correct.
