The man sits on a bench within a monitored zone. The presence sensors track occupancy density, not identity. His body contributes to a number that does not require a name.
Across from him, a public display cycles through compliance reminders. Participation is framed as a mutual process. Signals go in. Provisions come out. The loop is clean.
He considers returning to the terminal, repeating the steps until something changes. The thought resolves itself. Repetition would only produce more completions without content.
Instead, he watches others move through the city, each action leaving behind a measurable trace—entries, confirmations, acknowledgments. The city knows where they are because it knows who they are.
A service drone pauses nearby, recalculating its route. Its sensors adjust, avoiding collision. It recognizes obstacles. It does not recognize people.
When it moves on, the system records a successful reroute.
No record is created for the pause.
He understands now that the condition is stable. Not an error state. Not a temporary gap. A resolved outcome that requires no further attention.
The system is complete without him.
