Ivy jolted out of bed; she was breathing hard. Ivy put her hand on her chest to try to slow her breathing and heart rate. She looked at her alarm clock. 6:32 a.m. Ivy grunted. “Well, it looks like I’m up now.” Ivy sighed. Throwing the covers off her, Ivy threw her legs over the bed and noticed something on her feet. Ivy looked at her feet and they were full of dirt and mud. Ivy looked at her feet confused. She knew she took a shower before dinner last night. “Huh” Ivy couldn’t understand why her feet were dirty. When Ivy stood, one giant Oak leaf floated to the ground. “My dream…” Ivy was struggling to remember what her dream was. It was at the back of her mind, but it felt like she couldn’t reach it. Ivy put the leaf on her desk and grabbed her notebook. Ivy tried to recall her dream the best that she could. Then a thought hit her, she flipped back a couple of pages and saw the pictures she drew of the man and woman. “I knew I'd dreamt about them before!” Ivy still didn’t know what this meant. Ivy flipped back to the page she was writing and drew the best that she could recall of the people in her dream. The older woman was etched into Ivy’s brain. The way she looked at Ivy. Ivy sketched the woman from the water. Once completed, Ivy went to take a shower. Down in the kitchen, Mary and Jim were drinking their coffee at the island. “She is up early.” Jim commented on hearing the shower start. “I don’t believe she slept well. I could feel her energy was off all night.” Mary took a sip and looked at her husband. “Jim, it may be time to let her know who she is and where we got her from.” Jim looked at his wife. They’ve been married for 31 years next month. He loved his wife with everything he had and when she told him she was a witch, he accepted it. He loved the way she made him laugh and she was the most empathetic woman he ever knew. Losing their baby nearly destroyed him because she hurt so much. When they received Ivy, his heart was so full, and he vowed to always protect his girls. Jim knew Ivy was different, he knew she had more power than his wife. Jim was extremely nervous about it all. “I will go with your instincts on this one, my love. I am not in my element when it comes to magic and all things otherworldly.” Mary smiled. She knew it must be hard for Jim, but he still stood by her side every day. Mary decided that night she would bring Ivy over to Eddie’s and they would let her know about her birthright. Mary walked over to her husband and wrapped her arms around his shoulders and kissed the top of his head. His shaggy brown hair was combed back in a nice presentable way. “How did I ever get so lucky to end up with a man like you?” Jim smiled and pulled her close. “Not as lucky as I, my stars.” Jim pulled Mary down onto his lap and encircled his wife with his arms and lightly brushed his lips against hers. Mary let out a sigh. After all these years, the chemistry between them still burned bright. Mary opened herself to him and when he pressed his lips to hers, she welcomed them with slight hunger. Ivy came down to find her parents in an embrace. She smiled at herself. One day, Ivy thought. Ivy cleared her throat. “Ok enough you two! Get a room!” Ivy laughed as she made her way to the fridge. Jim chuckled. Mary turned her head and smiled at her daughter. “Darling, this whole house is our room.” Ivy laughed as Mary batted her eyes at her. With one last kiss, Mary rose to dish out breakfast. The family ate their breakfast in easy conversation. As Ivy was about to head out the door, Mary called to her. “Ivy, don’t make plans for after school today!” “Ok mom! Love you both!” Ivy heard the responses back and walked out the door. Today felt a little different. There was a charge in the air. Ivy was at her locker when Mara bounced up. “Hey girl hey!” Mara said in her happy lit voice. Ivy shut her locker door. “Hey girl.” “So, mom told me to thank you again for our night off.” Ivy looked at mara. “Night off?” Ivy looked confused. Mara snickered a little. “Yeah, it was a totally free night of pizza and a movie and my bestie!” Mara saved herself there. Ivy relaxed her face. “Oh, anytime!” The girls were making their way to their classrooms when they noticed a large body of people at the end of the hall. “Wanna check it out?” Mara asked. Ivy agreed. The girls could see everyone was grouped around a few boys. Ivy didn’t recognize them at all. As they got closer to the group, the heat started to come back again, only this time it felt hotter. One of the boys looked up and right at Ivy. Ivy gasped when they made eye contact. His bright green and yellow eyes shimmered at her. Ivy grabbed Mara’s arm as the heat in her chest exploded. Ivy could feel her heart start to beat faster. “What is it? What’s wrong?” Mara looked at Ivy, concern lacing her voice. “I.. I don’t know.” Ivy said rubbing at her chest. She could not stop looking into his eyes. Mara grabbed Ivy’s arm and spun her around. Ivy could still feel the heat and now there was a tug that felt like the farther she moved away, the worse it got. “Mar..” Ivy whispered. Mara pulled out her phone. “On our way now, get Mary.” Ivy tried to look at Mara, but her head felt so heavy. Why is she calling mom? The noise from the school started to fade away and Mara was pulling Ivy away so fast. The pain felt so intense.
