Bound by Contract: Married to the Cold CEO
Chapter 1: The Price of Legacy
The rain beat against the floor-to-ceiling glass of the sixtieth floor with the rhythm of an executioner's drum. Below, the glittering metropolis was a smear of blurred yellow taxi lights and slick dark asphalt.
Ava Sinclair did not look down. She kept her eyes fixed on the man sitting across the massive black marble desk.
Alexander Vance looked less like a corporate titan and more like a statue sculpted from polished granite and quiet, lethal authority. He didn't slouch. He didn't fidget. His dark, tailored suit fitted his broad shoulders impeccably, and his intense, slate-gray eyes locked onto hers with the precision of a predator measuring its prey.
"You're three minutes late, Miss Sinclair," Alexander said. His voice was a deep, smooth baritone—devoid of emotion, yet heavy with command.
"Traffic was impossible, Mr. Vance," Ava replied cleanly, crossing one leg over the other as she settled deeper into the plush leather chair. She refused to apologize. Apologizing to a man like Alexander Vance was like bleeding in front of a shark. "Besides, I assumed a man who manages a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate could spare three minutes for the woman about to sacrifice her personal freedom for him."
A sharp, almost imperceptible twitch appeared at the corner of Alexander's jaw. "Sacrifice? Let us not rewrite the narrative, Ava. You are here because Sinclair Holdings is less than seventy-two hours away from a hostile liquidation. Your father's health cannot sustain another scandal, and three hundred of your family's lifelong employees will be thrown onto the street by Friday."
Ava’s chest tightened, a cold knot forming in her stomach. Every word he spoke was a brutal truth, stripped of sympathy. Her father’s sudden stroke three months ago had exposed years of embezzlement by the board of directors. The Sinclair name, once synonymous with old-money royalty, was now dangling by a single thread over an abyss of total ruin.
And Alexander Vance held the shears.
"I am fully aware of my situation," Ava said, forcing her voice to remain steady, her chin held high. "And you are here because the board of Vance Enterprises views you as an unfeeling, ruthless corporate machine. You need a respectable wife from a prestigious family to secure the dynasty trust before the annual shareholder summit next month. I am offering you the immaculate reputation of the Sinclair name."
"And I am offering you financial salvation," Alexander said coldly. He slid a thick, leather-bound document across the marble. "The contract has been drafted by my personal legal team. Read it."
Ava picked up the document. The paper felt heavy, smooth, and final. She flipped through the pages, her eyes skimming the strict legal terminology until they landed on the core stipulations printed in bold near the center:
1. The duration of this marriage shall be exactly three hundred and sixty-five days from the date of civil registration.
2. Both parties will maintain a flawless, affectionate public image at all times.
3. The party of the second part (Ava Sinclair) shall reside in the private residence of the party of the first part (Alexander Vance).
4. Private living quarters will remain entirely separate. Neither party shall interfere in the personal affairs, past history, or private emotional boundaries of the other.
5. Falling in love, developing genuine romantic attachments, or breaking confidentiality will result in immediate termination of the agreement and forfeiture of all financial relief.
Ava let out a soft, bitter laugh, looking up from the page. "Rule number five seems entirely unnecessary, Mr. Vance. I severely doubt you possess the capacity for human warmth anyway."
The ambient hum of the office seemed to vanish. The atmosphere grew thick, heavy with sudden, suffocating tension.
Alexander slowly stood up from his chair. At six-foot-two, his presence dominated the room, shutting out the storm outside. He walked around the desk with slow, deliberate steps until he stood directly beside her chair. He leaned down, placing one hand on the armrest and the other on the back of her seat, trapping her within his space.
The scent of expensive cedarwood, rain, and subtle cologne hit her senses all at once. His dark eyes burned into hers with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
"Do not mistake my self-control for a lack of capability, Ava," he murmured, his voice dropping an octave, rich and dangerously low. "You are entering my world. You will sleep under my roof, carry my last name, and play the role of my devoted wife in front of every camera in this city. You would do well to remember who holds the power here."
Ava’s heart hammered violently against her ribs, but she refused to flinch. She leaned in closer instead, her eyes flashing with defiant fire.
"Power is temporary, Alexander," she whispered back, her gaze unwavering. "You might own the company, but you don't own me. Twelve months. Let's see if your icy authority can survive a year living under the same roof as me."
For a fraction of a second, Alexander’s eyes darkened, dropping down to her lips before snapping back to her eyes. An electric, dangerous spark flared between them—an undeniable pull that neither of them had anticipated.
Then, as quickly as it appeared, Alexander pulled back, restoring his impassive, impenetrable mask.
He picked up a gold fountain pen from the desk and held it out to her. "Sign it, Miss Sinclair. Or watch your father's legacy vanish by sunrise."
Ava took the pen. Her fingers brushed against his warm, calloused hand, sending a sudden shiver straight down her spine. Ignoring the sensation, she pressed the nib to the paper.
With three swift, decisive strokes, she signed her name at the bottom of the final page.
Ava Sinclair was no longer just an heiress fighting to save her family.
She was now Mrs. Alexander Vance.
"Pack your bags," Alexander said coldly, taking the pen back and closing the leather binder. "My driver will pick you up at seven o'clock tonight. Welcome to my world, Ava."
