Cal
The pain going through my body is blinding. Every time I wake up, I can’t help but scream before going back under again. I think that this is the third time that I have passed out, but this time is different. I see a bright light in the middle of the darkness. For a moment, I wonder if I am dying and if that light is my way into the afterlife. I can't resist the urge to walk towards it.
As I get closer I see a giant weeping willow tree and a woman sitting against it and sitting beside her is a giant wolf. It’s even bigger than Titus’ wolf.
The wolf notices me and looks back at the woman and with a nod of her head the wolf stands up and walks towards me and circles around me then walks back to the woman and nods it’s head like it wants me to sit.
I follow and sit where it wanted me to, and I look at this magnificent beast. It has silver fur and yes, I really mean silver- it’s not dull like gray is and its fur seems to shimmer and shine like a valuable piece of metal. But in the center of the wolf’s head, its fur is white and in the shape of a diamond. The most captivating thing about this wolf though is its eyes. They are purple, but a light purple like an amethyst color.
The woman clears her throat and I look at her and she smiles softly at me. Her long silver hair goes down to her waist and she has a pale complexion that almost seems to glow like the moon. She and the wolf have a lot of similarities except her eyes were more of a violet color.
She smiles at me and I feel like she is warm and comforting like a mother. Her voice sounds so soothing as she says, “Sit child.”
I listen to her request and sit down. I feel like I’ve known her my whole life even though this is the first time I’ve ever seen her. She sighs and says, “This was not the original plan I had for you, Calliope.”
“You-you know my name?”
She smirks and nods, “Soon dear, everyone will know of your name and you will be proud of it. I know you’re embarrassed by it now, but it will help you to stick out from the crowd.”
I hate sticking out from the crowd, but I don’t say that. I just nod as I listen to her. She sighs, “You are about to learn a lot of new information that is going to surprise you, dear. It is going to shake you to your core. But I am with you. I have blessed you with your mate and more importantly with this wolf.” She says as she nods towards the wolf who is lying on the ground but lifts its head high as if proud of itself for being hand chosen by her.
I ask, “Who are you?”
She smiles, “My name is Selene, dear, but most people call me the moon goddess.”
My mouth feels dry, and she continues to speak, “You and your wolf have been chosen specifically by me for a greater purpose. Do not doubt your place. And I know things will overwhelm you and I encourage you to confide in your mate and your wolf. They will understand and support you more than anyone else could.”
“So, I’m a werewolf?” I ask with my brows furrowed and my mouth slightly pouted as I try to process this information. She smiles and places a hand on my cheek and rubs her thumb across my eyebrows and says, “Settle, child, it’s not as scary as you may think. You’ve always been a wolf, dear, unfortunately Richard did not prepare you. I understand his reasoning, but it is going to cause you further grief. But this pain you’re feeling is your body trying to make it’s first shift. Push through the pain and the blacking out and trust in me and in your wolf to take control.”
I look back towards the wolf as it stands up and takes a step towards me. I hesitantly hold out my hand to pet it. The fur is softer than I could’ve imagined, and I smile and ask, “What’s your name?”
I am surprised when I hear a new voice and I realize it is my wolf as she says in a calm yet strong tone, “I am Esther.”
I breathe out slowly as I place my other hand on her and I continue to pet her as I say, “Well, Esther, I am Calliope. You can call me Cal or Cali if you’d like.”
I swear she smiles at me as she says, “It’s nice to meet you, Cali.”
I tilt my forehead towards her so we’re touching as I say, “Nice to meet you, Esther”
I hear Selene say, “Calliope, you really need to get back to your time and shift. Remember, do not be fearful for the best is yet to come.”
I smile softly, “Thank you, Selene.”
I take a deep breath and open my eyes and I feel the searing pain in my stomach that makes me whimper. Immediately I see Titus beside me and he says, “Calliope, talk to us, princess, where does it hurt?”
I try to breathe through the pain, but I can’t help but grimace. Before I can say anything, I hear my mom’s voice, “Calliope!”
I hear my dad after her and his voice is furious as he demands, “What is happening to her?”
