Sixty-Eight | Can't Picture It

1225 Words
Cal I sit on the barstool and watch as Rose gets some juice out of the fridge and begins to pour a cup for each of us. I notice I startle her when I ask, “How did you know you were ready to have kids?” She passes me the cup of juice and jokes, “What? Hanging around my kids makes you wish you had your own?” I roll my eyes and say, “Titus told me today that he would like me to start thinking about when I would like to have a baby.” Her eyebrows raised and said, “Sounds like he’s ready.” I sigh, “I don’t know if I am. I get it like wolves typically move quickly with well… everything.” She laughs at my comment and says with a shrug, “That’s just how wolves are. We know who our mate is immediately and as long as you’re not a d**k who reject their mate then I mean you know immediately who you’re going to be with for the rest of your life.” I nod, “Yeah, I get that.” She reaches her hand out to grab mine and says, “I know it’s hard, Cali, but you just have to figure out what you’re comfortable with and what you’re not.” I sigh, “I’m 18, Rose, I just I can’t picture having a baby right now.” She smirks at me and I ask, “What?” She shakes her head, “Do you know how far apart we are in age?” I shake my head no, I never thought to ask her about her age. We got along so well I never even considered what our age difference might be. She smiles, “We’re five years apart, Cal, I got pregnant with Alya pretty much right after meeting Marcus. It was overwhelming- especially for him because he was a human. I thought he would leave me over it. But he didn’t and my life with him and the kids was the best that I could ask for even now I wouldn’t change a thing because my kids help keep his memory alive.” I ask softly, “Do you ever think you would date again?” She sighs, “I know Marcus would want me to… I think at some point I might, but I’m just not there yet. Unless the moon goddess gives me a second chance mate I don’t know if I could ever see myself with a person long term.” I question, “Second chance mate?” She nods with a small smile, “Yeah, it’s when you get rejected, lost your mate, whatever and the moon goddess blesses you with another. It’s not super common but it does happen.” I nod in understanding and she asks, changing the topic, “Hey, could you help me find an outfit for tonight? I’m not sure any of my clothes are really suitable for, you know, a party.” I chuckle and nod, “Yeah, let’s go check it out.” Titus Cali mind links me that she’s going to the mall with Rose. I’m tempted to send someone to escort them, but Kane immediately grumbles his opinion and reminds me to back off. I listen to him, but I feel on edge the entire time that Cali is gone. I try to get my mind on something different, so I print the email I want to send to the Alpha King and Queen and take the paper to her dad. I hear a lot of commotion coming from downstairs, but as soon as I go to take a step towards the stairs Eric’s voice is in my mind: Don’t come down, Alpha. He never calls me Alpha unless he’s being super serious. I ask: What’s going on? He huffs: Well, one of the girls got morning sickness and threw up and then the other one smelled the throw up and instantly threw up as well. Now there’s vomit all over the floor, Hugh slipped in it and he threw up too. Now we’re trying to get it cleaned up and we’re going to take showers and then get back to you know, party stuff. God, that sucks. Thanks for the warning. No problem, Ti, I’m sure you and Cali will be in the same boat soon enough. I don’t respond and just sigh sadly to myself. Although I’m ready to be there with her with the way she is acting I don’t think she is ready to be there with me. I’m not going to push her, I know she’s going through a lot right now and on top of that she was raised as a human. Humans don’t normally get pregnant so young and so early into a relationship- at least they don’t do it on purpose. Meanwhile wolves don’t care because we know we’re going to be with that person forever no matter what. I reach her parent’s room and knock on the door. Her mom answers and I smile, “Hi Danica, is Richard here?” She nods as she opens the door wide and gestures for me to come in. I walk in and see Richard sitting at a new desk that he has set up in here. He turns around and smiles when he sees me and asks, “Titus, what are you doing here?” “Well, I believe we’ve all had the conversation that we believe Cali might be a royal wolf?” Both of her parents nod at me and I say, “Well, I believe I found an email to the Alpha King and Luna Queen and I want to send them an email, but I want to make sure it sounds right. Could you read over this and tell me if it sounds good?” He nods and takes the paper from me and his wife stands by his side as she reads the letter with him. She must be a quicker reader than him because she speaks before he does, “I think it sounds good, but may I suggest one thing?” I nod and she says, “Send some pictures of Cali with it. Get a picture showing her purple eyes and her markings, and we have some photos from when she was young- send one of those as well. They may be able to recognize her.” I nod as I smile, “That’s a great idea. Could you get me the photos?” Both of them nod and Danica says, “I’ll have to go through our storage boxes, but we’re happy to do anything to help you, Titus.” I smile and nod, “Thank you, both of you.”
