Prologue
My heart stopped as I gawked at the TV. It was a typical Tuesday night and I was sitting on the couch with my husband. 24 years old and my life was about to take a drastic turn. Braking News interrupted the football game I was being forced to watch. An athletically built man with ebony skin and long chestnut dreads flashed a wide smile exposing his fangs.
His. Fangs
“I am a vampire. An immortal being. For centuries I have lived off blood. For the longest time I haven’t cared for human life. you where all simply food for my kind. But In recent years I have seen the light and no longer wish to do harm, yet it is still necessary for my survival. There are many of my kind feel the same, so I and my team of scientists have developed this”-he held up a Small vile Containing a red liquid. “’Saccharum Sanguine’ this is synthetic blood. A drop of this in water gives vampires the necessary sustenance to live instead of feeding on humans.” The CEO continued. Zach’s arm tightened on my knee causing me to wince. He had been drinking again and he was quick to anger
‘Monsters! I f*****g knew it! If I ever find one ill kill it! Come to think of it…’
his thoughts filled my mind. It was my “gift” as my mother called it. She is a witch and my father was Fae he disappeared before I was born along with most of his kind. All of this though; witches, Fae, vampires, and their existence was supposed to be a secret.
And this vampire CEO just exposed the hidden mystical world to humans. Just to promote his new product, real classy.
My hand found its way to my stomach thinking about the two paranormal miracles in there.
Should I tell him? The vampire didn't say anything else was real, although its probably a matter of time before we’re all exposed. I looked at Zach, I hadn't noticed that he was watching me. His dark brown eyes held nothing but confusion and anger. More thoughts and memories filled his mind. He was putting two and two together.
An image flashed in my mind of him dragging me by my wrists across the room. I stood up to get away from him before it was a reality but I was too slow. Curse the big pregnant belly, He gripped my hand stopping me.
“Where you going’?” he slurred, the sent of beer rolling out of his mouth.
“Um, I’m going to check on mom.” I answered timidly.
“You know, all this talk about vampires I wonder if other things exist.” He yanked me back down pulling my arm out of its socket. Then put his arm around me keeping me in place. His memories flashed through our minds. every time I’ve muttered to myself then something unexplainable happens, every weird whisper he witnessed between my mother and I. the unnatural crystal blue of my eyes, the eyes that he became obsessed with. I started to panic , my heart sped up and I held my breath as I waited for the question that was blurting out in his mind. I knew what his reaction was going to be when he found out.
“I thought I was crazy. Every time I just brushed it off. but it would make sense that you are a Freak!“ he quickly pushed me on the floor and lunged at my neck pushing his rough boney hands down on my esophagus.
“WHAT ARE YOU?” he yelled while his hands gripped my air ways too tight for me to respond
“A witch” croaked a breathless voice to the left of me followed by a strong gust of wind blew Zach off of me and across the room. I immediately gasped as much air as I could my lungs burning as they filled. I coughed trying to stabilize my breathing and looked at him. Already up and running toward the basement. My mom ran to me and helped me on my feet
“You shouldn’t of done that mom you need to keep all the energy you have.” since my father, her mate, had disappeared she has steadily gotten weaker and now she was close to dying and no amount of magic could save her. Use of magic for a white witch like us causes a tremendous amount of energy.
“I won't sit by and watch him Hurt you anymore!” she exclaimed between frantic breaths. Her body began to tremble and knees gave out underneath her I grabbed her by the waist an brought her close so she could lean on me. Just then we heard a gunshot where the bullet hit the tv just above us. I jerked my head to the entrance of the basement where Zach was there holding a pistol in one hand and a silver Dagger with the other.
He aimed his gun at us again getting ready to pull the trigger
“Zach please we can talk about this!’’ I screamed“ I'm pregnant with your babies remember? Please don’t make us hurt you!” tears blurred my vision as she pulled the trigger again. I jumped to the floor merrily escaping the bullet. Or so I thought. Warm liquid dripped on my arm and I noticed my mother had been shot in the head. Died instantly. I stared at her in disbelief. I gently layed her on the floor shaking as I attempted to process the situation. The tears welling in my eyes dropped uncontrollably on to her face. I started hyperventilating, taking a trembling hand to her cheek I let out a scream as soon as I made contact with her lifeless skin. I looked up to find the monster who shot her but he was gone. The sound of car door shutting outside made me run to the window watching him backing out of the driveway and speeding off into the night. I feel to my knees and began to sob. My mother was gone. My husband was gone and I’m left alone to raise part Fae babies by myself.
Part of me is relived. Relieved that I could be free of that monstrous man. Who forced me into s*x than marriage promising a comfortable life for my mother in her dying days. That was a lie. Sure she had the best doctors money could buy but living here was a nightmare.
I held my baby bump as tears escaped uncontrollably.
“What do I do now?”
