Shit. Tyler’s stomach did a flip. “Uh. No. Sorry. Jarod’s not here right now. Can I take a message?”
“This is his brother, Jonathan.”
Shit. s**t. “Hi, Jonathan. It’s Tyler. Jarod won’t be home for a while. Do you want him to call you?”
“Maybe you can help.” Jonathan’s voice sounded muted as if he stood away from the phone. “My mother and I will be in town next week, and we’d love to see him.” His words came out rushed.
“Does he know you’re coming?”
“No.”
“So, it’s like a birthday surprise?” Tyler’s adrenaline and heartbeat raced. “That’s awesome.”

“We should make it a real surprise.” Ideas already formed in Tyler’s head.
