THE PREVIOUS EVENING, Adam, Nick, and Ryan had discussed the perimeter and from where any possible attack could come. Adam and Nick had shown the surrounding area to Ryan. Now, they patrolled the field now and then. Sometimes they made the rounds after forty-five minutes, sometimes after an hour. They didn’t want to become predictable. Predictability always led to defeat.
As Kate was in the house with Diane, Adam didn’t worry so much that she would take off somewhere on her own. He knew that Kate wouldn’t allow it, and Diane didn’t want to upset her.
Adam grinned. Kate knew to milk her pregnancy for all its worth. She already had Ryan eating out of her tiny palm. Nothing seemed beneath her. When she got sick that morning, Ryan went through living hell.
