CHAPTER NINE –––––––– ADAM HELPED DIANE IN the car and fastened her safety belt. Then he flexed his shoulders to work the kinks in his muscles. He was scorched and hot. He itched everywhere and wiped off his face with a forearm. He didn't care about the black streaks that marred his skin. Dousing a fire was hard. Adam felt more respect for firemen's work. He went around the hood to get into the car but remembered the food he had left inside the trunk. With a grimace, he realized that some would spoil until they came back. “If I leave you alone in the car for a few minutes, may I hope to find you in the same spot?” he asked Diane, leaning over her in the car.
