Chapter fifteen - Family day

2741 Words
Kylie's POV: It has been two weeks since I live with miss Carter and her family. I have to say she has been nice to me. Her kids treat me as if I am their real sister. I'm glad we have understood each other so well since the beginning. Her cooking skills are good. Finally, I can eat ordinary food like everybody else. It's better than eating snails and more seafood. I am not a fan of this. I was surprised she had read my whole medical report. Usually, no one does it. She was the first one to read it and ask questions about it. Here I feel safe and loved. Maybe that is part of the plan. They have to make me feel good. Then they can show their real faces. I need to stop thinking like that about people. Miss Carter is not a horrible person. She helps me a lot, and I know she cares about me. I need to appreciate more what these people do for me. It's not a lie that sometimes I think this is too much. They took a stranger into their house. Also, they treated me as if I was part of them. It's not like this is something terrible. Let's say I am not used to this. I guess I have to get used to this soon. That is a good family, and that's what I wanted. Finally, someone is taking care of me. I never thought this was possible. After the third family, I lost hope in everything. At least I know good people exist. I thought this was only in a fairytale. Now I know that it's true. I'm glad that they chose me. Miss Carter looks like my mom more than she thinks. They have similar parenting styles. I don't know how she does it. Some of the things my mom was doing the same way. All I will say is that I am lucky to be here. Otherwise, after I turn twenty-one, I have nowhere else to go. I can go to my house. I don't have the money to turn on the electricity or pay for the water and other bills. I hope that here things will be different. That's what I want. It's the weekend. Miss Carter had made plans for the whole day. She didn't tell us where we were going or what we would do. I guess she wants to surprise us. It's not like I mind. I like surprises, but I prefer to know what is going on. She probably wants all of us to have fun together. For now, we didn't have a weekend where all of us were available. Someone was always busy. I believe that is why she wanted to make plans for us. I think we'll have fun. I woke up. I went to get ready for the day. I have no idea where we are going. That's why I will dress comfortably. I can never go wrong with sweatpants and a hoodie. If I get hot, I will put a T-shirt under it. When I was ready, I went to check on Josh and Rosie. The little girl was sleeping so cutely in her room. Sad to say, I have to say the same for her brother. I shouldn't be talking about him like that, but I can't help myself. Maybe it's better if we stay away from each other. Later, I went for breakfast. Miss Carter was setting the table, and I decided to help her. - Good morning. Do you need help? - Oh, hey, Kylie. Thank you, but I finished. You can sit down if you want. - Thanks. Can I know what we will do today? - I'm sorry, but I can't tell you. It's a surprise for all of you. - Why are you so sure that we will like it? - Because I know my kids. - You don't know me. - I said, my kids. That includes you too. - Really? That feels nice. Thank you. - You're welcome. Will you do me a favor? - Yeah, sure. You can tell me what you want, and I'll do it. - I want you to go and wake up Josh and Rosie. After breakfast, we'll go. - Um, ok. - Thank you, Kylie. - You're welcome. I want to check on Rosie first. She was already up and making her bed. When she saw me, she quickly came for a hug. I'm glad that she likes me. Also, she is one cute little girl. Well, if you can call eleven-year-old little. I told her to go for breakfast while checking on her brother. That will be hard. I carefully walked in and saw him still sleeping. It's true what people say. Boys sleep cute. I am here only to wake him up. I won't do anything else. That's why I carefully shook him. There was no reaction. I guess he sleeps deeply. Sadly, this can last long. I shook him harder, and he mumbled something. - Josh, you need to wake up. Breakfast is ready. - Five more minutes. Make them ten. - I can't do that. Breakfast is ready, and your parents are waiting for us. - Kylie? What are you doing here? - I came to wake you up. Your mom told me to do it. - Do you mean our mom? - I'm not adopted yet, so she's not my mom. I'm sorry. - It's ok. I understand. - Can we go now? - Yeah, sure. Give me a few minutes to get dressed. - I will wait for you in the kitchen. - Ok, no problem. Soon all of us were around the table eating. I saw that Rosie was excited but tried to keep it calm. As I see it, miss Carter wants us together. When everyone finished their food, she and her husband took some things and let us into the car. It looks like we will travel somewhere. I love traveling. That's why it's good that I always bring my headphones with me. I will never throw these away, even if they break up. After all, that is the only thing I have from my parents. We got into the car, and I put them on. Now, the world is mine. Usually, when I listen to music, I always get lost. Sometimes, I think much, but I can't help it. As I was listening to a song, someone tapped my shoulder. It was Josh. - Do you want something? - No, I wanted to see what you're doing. - I thought it was visible. - What is your favorite song? - Oh, I don't have one. - Everybody has one. - Well, not me. I listen to many songs, so I can't pick one. - I like your headphones. They are cute. - Thanks. That was a birthday present. - Oh, I'm sorry that I asked. - It's ok. Talking about my parents is not something I like, but it doesn't mean I don't do it. - Probably it's hard for you. - I'm trying to move on. It's not like that is working. - Some things take time. You have to be patient. - I know. You are lucky to have a mom like yours. Also, you better appreciate what she's doing for you. - I do, but I don't think I have shown it enough. - It's never too late to start. - You're right again. After an hour, we reached our destination. The car stopped in front of Luna Park. I haven't been here for a long time. I'm not sure what I am supposed to do. Well, I'm glad I'm here. Rosie quickly jumped off the car and walked in. Her father went right after her. Miss Carter did the same. Josh waited for me, and both of us walked inside. The memories started hitting me. I miss my childhood. I haven't done that many things, but they were good. We walked to his parents. - Ok, your dad and I will take care of Rosie. You and Kylie can do whatever you want. Take this money with you. - miss Carter said - Thanks, mom. - You can go now. None of you should stay with us. We're too old for you. - If you say so. Kylie, what do you want us to do? - I don't know. You can choose. - Ok, then. Let's go. I have some ideas in mind. - I will follow you. Both with Josh when in front of a booth. It's a classic game of throwing a ball into cans. The more you hit, the better price you get. Honestly, I don't need anything from here. The thing is that I will never say this out loud. I don't want to disappoint him. I looked up and saw that he had knocked all the cans. I chose a little teddy bear keychain. I could pick the biggest prize, but I didn't want it. That was too big for me. I looked around and noticed ducks. I used to love this game as a kid. All you have to do is fish. Each duck has some points at the bottom. The more points you get, the better prize you will receive. I gave the man five dollars and started playing. The game used to be fun, but now it makes me sad. I already gave him money, so I had to play the whole game. I got one hundred and ten points. I picked a green bracelet. It looked handmade. After that, I went to a quiet place and sat down. I don't know if I can stay here the whole day. It's too much for me. Soon, someone sat next to me. It was Josh. I hope I haven't ruined his day. That wasn't my intention. Let's say that I don't feel in the mood. Probably it's because of the place. - Hey, are you ok? - Yes, I am. You don't have to worry about me. - What if I want to be worried? - What? - Nothing. Forget that I have said something. - If you say so. - What do you want to do you next? If you want, we can go for food. - Thanks, but I'm not hungry. - Is there a problem? You look upset. - I'm fine. Don't worry. - Let's say that I believe you. Can I do something to make you feel better? - Maybe you can. It depends on if you want to do it. - Yes, I do. - Ok, then. Let's go. - Where? - Wait and see. There is one place I used as a hiding spot from my parents. Of course, they always found me. I can take Josh and tell him what I did. Honestly, all I want is to spend time with him. He's a nice person and knows how to treat people. I wish all the boys have been like him. Maybe I want too much. We went there, and he looked around. There is nothing scary here. The place is behind one booth. I used to play hide and seek here. I don't know how my parents were always finding me. Some days here were crowded. - What is that place? - I used to play hide and seek here with my parents. - They found you? - Somehow, they always did it. I don't know how. There were days in which there was crowded. - It's good that they didn't lose you. - That won't happen. My parents know me better than anyone else. When I thought I was clever, they were always one step ahead. I couldn't beat them. - I said and laughed - It looks like you had a happy childhood. - I did. I wish it has been longer. - Do you want to be a kid forever? - Maybe. It's not that bad. Well, except for the fact that you have responsibilities. - That's part of growing up. - It's not something I like. - I said, and he chuckled - I'm sure no one does. - Can we go for ice cream? - Yeah, sure. I will do whatever you want. - Why are you so nice to me? - Because you're doing it too. Also, you didn't do anything to me. Why shouldn't I treat you like that? - I don't know. Thank you for that. It's good to hear it. - No problem. Let's go for ice cream now. - I don't need a second call. I noticed Rosie was playing with her parents while we ate ice cream. She wanted to have ice cream the moment she saw ours. Maybe we should have eaten it in a different place. After all, miss Carter bought her ice cream. All of us were sitting and eating. As I see it, we'll spend here the whole day. It's not like I mind. Josh is a good company. I hope that we can keep things friendly. I don't want our relations to change. Up to now, I have liked our friendship. That's why I want to keep it. It's not a lie that I miss Annie and Nicole. Sadly, I can't see them. Two days ago they went to England. If things go well, they will get adopted. I know how much Annie wanted it. Finally, her wish came true. Around 4 pm, we walked home. It was a fun day. Rosie didn't want to go. Sadly, she can stay there alone. Maybe Josh and I can take her there again one day. For now, she will be at home. I wanted to help miss Carter with dinner, but she didn't let me. In that case, I will talk with my future brother. I knocked on his door, and he let me in. His wet hair tells me that he came out of the shower. Now I know I was here at the wrong time. It's better if I keep myself calm. - Hello, future brother. - Hello to you too, future sister. - Josh said and laughed - Your hair is wet. - Thank you for noticing this. I just came out of the shower. - It's visible. Do you have plans before dinner? - No, why? - I wanted to help your mom with that, but she didn't let me. - In that case, we can do something. - he said and came closer - What are you doing? - Trying to see something. - What is that something? - I can't tell you. It's a secret. - Really? I think you don't trust me enough to tell me. - That's not true. I trust you. - Why? You don't know me. - Why are you so sure? - I am. What are your plans? As I said, I didn't have any. - Well, you can choose what you want us to do. - That is interesting. - I won't deny a movie in bed with a girl. - Don't you watch movies with your sister? - Sometimes, but she's younger. I will leave this to Austin. - Are you sure he only plays with her? - For now, yes. I warned him not to date her in the future. - Why? I know he is older than her, but you can't stop true love. - It's weird. - If she's happy, you should let them be together. - I will think about it when the time comes. - If you say so. Josh and I watched a movie. Later, we were for dinner. Of course, Rosie wanted to play with us after it. I wasn't much in the mood. The thing is that I couldn't say no to her puppy eyes. That's why I had to agree. The same is for Josh. We played with her until it was her bedtime. My future brother wanted another movie, so we watched it. Well, he fell asleep in the middle of it. I put a blanket on top of him and left. I'm glad that this family and I understand each other so well. It's like I haven't done it before. Maybe that is because they treat me well. I am so thankful for that. I hope that this time, things will go in the right way.
