THE ASWANG AND THE CONTINUUM COSMOS
Makati City is one of the bustling cities in Metro Manila today. With over two million populations, it has evolved from a simple town into a financial capital back in the late eighties. This overcrowded metropolis of banks, offices and shopping districts was the big apple of most people who came from different parts of the country in search of livelihood, entertainment or even of someone just to pull them out of their miserable and sometimes appalling condition.
But this paradise of lights and skyscrapers had an even sinister face, lurking beneath its progressive facade. As immigrants started to flock in like birds, some were lucky enough to find work of the lowest grade. In most cases, many ran out of luck because of having little experience; that is why in some areas, overcrowding was rife, that some unfortunate souls huddled themselves in parks, sideways, or even on derelict structures that may serve them as a possible shelter away from the rain.
Adding to this effect was the century old problem of drug abuse which was the mother lode of stashes of money for these crime syndicates. Even those narcissistic alligators, which held public offices, also get their hands into the illicit trade by hiding from the facade of "order and justice" just to silence their competitors.
But if we dig deeper into this, we will notice that these irregularities are just a tip of the iceberg, and there is more than meets the eye.
A millennia ago when everything we believed in was all but a canvas ready to be painted. A supreme deity called the “Neutratist”, created the “Continuum Cosmos”. And to fuel this complicated system, he decided to split his brain into two forces; one was the Left side which is passive, cold, anarchistic, apathetic, opportunistic, destructive, and pessimistic. The other half is a kind of spirit that is active, warm, creative, empathetic, harmonious, optimistic and ethical. The two were called the "Leftist" and "Rightist" respectively. With these two opposing forces at work, the Continuum Cosmos rotates everlastingly. The idea of these two working together is like two countries pitting against each other, so thus the term light versus dark was envisaged later on. The divine battle between good and evil cannot be stopped or else the balance of all things will become unstable. While time and space works with the Leftist and Rightist spirit fighting each other to maintain balance, The Neutralist coherently draws out the plan to create a vast space based on his likeness. For days, he outlined this open and almost infinite world from the Continuum Cosmos which he termed, "The Material Universe."
And with this, our world as we know became tangible. Uniform balance is also required to propel this vast physical space in which all living things both physical and spiritual in forms were added. The Neutralist, called the highest of all these tangible creatures, "Humans.” The attribute that the Neutralist bestowed onto these tangible beings that makes them on top of the pyramid was their versatility. And as a holder of this special trait, man became the supreme protector of all of his material creations. As already pointed - all was created in his own image, meaning we are free whenever we will take and make.
When his offspring the Leftist and the Rightist learned of this act. The two build a very strong desire to place themselves on top of those lesser beings- which will be serving them as a god. As a result of this ambitious action, the absolute collision between these two forces reached our horizons as far as man is concerned. At an uncertain point in time some of the sons and daughters of the Leftist came down to the material universe and tried to take control of all the living beings.
The children of the Rightist attempted all means to win the favour of these lowly humans by helping them establish harmony and tranquillity that are mostly sought after, which drives away the selfishness and chaos illuminated by the anarchistic Leftists. The war between good versus evil continued in this vast world with us humans involved. Those men who accepted the path to the left which is primarily malign and chaotic was implanted with leftist seeds inside them. As these destructive seeds began to sprout, these humans became corrupted and physically transformed into horrendous creatures and destroyed all of the peace loving people. Those men who followed the teachings of the Rightist masters became an instant target for these symbols of evil.
For centuries these creatures of the dark called in different names: Vampires, Childrens of the night, Man-eating humanoids, and here in the Philippines, the elusive “Aswang" which is the main focus of our story. This subject is a pile of confusion amongst doubters and will be an endless maze for truth seekers.
As we would expect due to its debatable nature, our story is very simple but becomes elaborate due to the fact that many questions will be raised such as; Do these creatures really exist?
In an inexact date in the first century. After the great Rightist prophet leaves to ascend back to the spiritual world. A group of his loyal supporters and some other men who swore an oath to ward off evildoers, established a brotherhood of warriors and made their vow to protect all that is good without question, giving a full-fledged loyalty to kill all what they believed would impure all sacred things.
As the new era approaches it has expanded into a highly covered up sophisticated network of skilled hit-men and assassins, whose primary mission was the total annihilation of these malign creatures and to stop their numbers from growing. This is the story of the Order of the White Robe, the arch nemesis of these demonic creatures here in the Philippines. As our world became modern, these cryptids also enjoyed doing the same. They become businessmen, highly educated citizens, and even ordinary ladies and gentlemen who make a living by the day, and transform into blood thirsty demons by night. But the sacred Order of the White Robe will never stop to eradicate these menacing creatures and to put an end to spreading their kind throughout the entire planet. The White Robe thus became very synonymous for these creatures to tremble in fear. Aswangs are basically carnivores. Some are just content with any livestock their hands can get like: dogs, cats, chickens and goats or in some rural areas: pigs and cows. But the most sought after food that these human predators placed with the highest regard are infants, born or embryonic. For them the aroma that these innocent children had made these nasty demons drool can be compared to a freshly baked bread out of the oven or for some, a very delectable ripe fruit.
Aswangs also stands for different types; Most of them can fly. Some can run as fast as a horse or even a half human half fish dwelling beneath the waves - in rivers. The belief in these cryptids was very common, especially in the countryside. There are also a few sightings of these creatures in cities that urban dwellers haven't realized that these creatures of the dark were living beside them. Versatility allowed humans to acquire many skills and abilities, so as these creatures who can hide their guise in any form possible. Aswangs had mastered the art of shape shifting. They can be a stray dog, cat, an old hag or a hermit, as a beautiful lady or a knight in shining armour which sets a trap for those naive humans to easily become their fresh ample supply of sustenance. On the other hand the White Robe implored to harness the powers of nature. They believed that we humans are at one with them. And to establish this intertwining connection the Order tapped into the powers of the unknown. This secret art allowed them to effectively heighten their physical prowess to combat these monsters - And so, our journey begins here in an ordinary street in some part of Makati City
September night of 2005 was indeed a bit chilly, a drizzle of rain was already falling at that time. At this hour (approximately 3am) many people are still up doing different things on the streets at Pio Del Pilar. But one man seems not to be enjoying this cold rainy night, because he is running away from something dangerous. As the man hurriedly sprints from street to street, he doesn’t seem to be aware of his own injuries, which obviously was a result from a serious brawl. He soberly holds his neck, trying to end the flowing blood that is coming out from a severe laceration it sustained. As he nervously catches his breath in every stride, a man in a motorcycle helmet and gear suddenly emerges out from nowhere. The injured man was alarmed by his sudden intrusion and cleared his throat, "I..I..I...I tried to take that bastard down. B..b..but he won't budge. That f&%k is the devil himself..."
As the poor wounded man tries everything in his power to avert himself, the other man stoically approaches him, making every step a sound of funeral bell to his frightened ears. As the end nears him, he still tries every sweet word he can think of to gain control of the situation. As he talks smoothly, calming the person in front of him, the other man continues to walk towards him as if he is not hearing anything. He then draws a long katana from his back.
The poor man who already sensed his demise, in a fit of desperate rage leaped to him. Barring his enormous teeth and talon- like nails, this was a tell-tale sign that this man is an Aswang. As the two exchange their respective attacks with one another, an unknown man makes his entrance from behind the Aswang. In a strike of lightning, he lops off the monster's head, killing him without giving the monster a chance to retaliate. Just like in a Japanese movie from the sixties the two swordsmen put their hypnotic gazes at one another, waiting for the right moment which one of them will make their first move. The Aswang's executioner was dressed in a hooded gray jacket, black trousers and military boots. His face is covered with a surgical mask and a pair of aviator shades, shielding his identity. As the rain continued to fall down upon them, the man in the hooded jacket readied his katana to strike a blow. But the man in the helmet suddenly raised his left arm, teasing him," Thanks for the leeway. That comes handy."
He then darted away into a dark alley. As he tried to pursue him, a loud roar of the motorcycle engine abruptly surprised him. As he placed his sharp eyes unto the man's getaway vehicle, a feel of repulsive anger and strong regret rushed towards him. Making him simper behind his mask. He then quickly decided to just call it a day.
As he moves towards the mutilated corpse of the Aswang, he draws back his katana to its sheath. Next, he pulled a red booklet out from his pocket and whispered something from its pages. A puff of smoke suddenly emerges beside the corpse, forming something mysterious.
As the smoke builds up, it instantly turns into an enormous centipede. Then it quickly turned its large head, towards the direction of the aroma of the dead body. He then moves quickly towards it and voraciously eats it; beginning from its feet, moving upward, towards the severed neck. When the greedy monster already had his fill and disappeared, the man shoves the dismembered head inside his backpack and walks away. As he was making a wide stride, he suddenly remembered that while he chopped off the Aswang's head, blood gushed out from its neck, spattering the gross liquid across his gray hooded jacket. He then stopped to remove his jacket and saw a large box adjacent from where he was standing. The large box huddled outside the gate of an apartment building. Thinking it was a makeshift trash bin he hurriedly puts his soiled jacket inside and dashes away into the dark streets
Inside of an unused narrow male’s comfort room, in one of its untidy cubicles, the man hurriedly locks the door and unzips his backpack. As he revealed the dead monster's head, he placed it on top of the water tank making an impression of a mummified Egyptian pharaoh, ready to hear a passage from the book of the dead. The same red booklet was taken out, browsed its contents and silently read something from it. He then points his right index and middle fingers into some parts of the Aswang's head in a way like placing something that our eyes cannot see. The placement was carefully done in a ritualistic order; starting from the nose, moving to the mouth, then chin, left eye, right eye, left ear and right ear. He then finalized this odd manoeuvre by pointing those fingers into the monster's forehead. As his fingers and the monster’s forehead touched, he felt the monster’s very rough skin at the tip of his fingers, making him somewhat a bit annoyed. Then he placed his mouth unto the monster’s right ear and whispered, “ADONAI” to it. As each of the letters of that sacred word entered the monster’s hollowed ears, the head suddenly jerked and its nose followed by drawing heavy breaths. It then quickly opened its large red eyes, slowly turning it towards the man.
