Chapter 10: Matthew
The sound of glass shattering as Willa's cup hit the floor made me jump. My older brother went into action, cupping his mate's small face and asking what was wrong. Seeing my big bad alpha brother fuss over a woman was strange enough. The fact that she had a baby face and looked no older than me made it even stranger. She had tears in her eyes and said, "You never said I'd be Luna." I just stared on observing as they had this conversation about the future that I realized was probably very private. I stepped away and went upstairs.
I waited a few minutes wondering if my brother and his mate would come upstairs but they didn't appear. I smelt her scent lingering near his bedroom and couldn't resist snooping. I let myself into his room and went straight into the closet. The left side meant for his mate's clothes was still bare. He had cleared it when he was 18 in hopes he would find his mate and move her in immediately. I wasn't old enough for a mate but I knew how desperately he wanted to find his. It was odd that he hadn't brought her things and unpacked. Maybe he was going to buy her new things because she didn't like her old things? I exited the closet and went into the bathroom. Still no girl stuff. I felt confusion take over as I went by the bed and the only items I found that could be Willa's was an old dingy dress and apron. Why was there an apron on the floor? Were they into kinky roleplay or something?
Before I could rummage around anymore of their stuff I heard my name being called from downstairs. I shot out, not wanting to get caught. I met my brother and new sister-in-law in the kitchen. She no longer looked distressed and the mess had been cleaned up.
"Yes?" I said, pretending to be nonchalant like I had not just been snooping. "We are going to the mall to buy clothes for Willa. Do you want to join us?" I nodded, surprised. I didn't think he would want to share their time together. "Good, you can help carry bags," he said, smirking at me. I felt my eyes bulge but he gave me a glare like he would tear me apart if I tried to back out.
I sat in the backseat while my brother drove our SUV and his mate sat in the front passenger seat. I don't know if they meant to hide it but they held hands in the center, their fingers intertwined. Romance didn't appeal to me much but I couldn't help thinking it was kind of cute. As we made our way to the mall I learned a few things about Willa, mostly from Nate. He talked while she mostly hummed in response. She was a reserved quiet little thing. I was surprised to learn she was treated like an Omega, basically a servant, at her old pack and that she didn't have clothes which explained the empty closet.
At the mall I didn't talk much, I carried the bags and listened mostly. I'm usually a rambunctious social person but today was different. Today I just wanted to observe my brother and his mate. The beautiful runt who had stolen my brother's heart was a very interesting person. She was quiet yet opinionated when she spoke to Nate, which most people would be too scared to do. She had no interest in fashion and yet she beamed with joy every time my brother told her something looked good on her. She seemed to exist solely for my brother and vice versa. They were truly soulmates and that made my heart melt a little. I'd been concerned a hardened alpha like Nate would end up with a mate who was greedy, selfish, and ruthless but he had been blessed with a pure girl with a fragile heart. She was the only reason his soft side was showing.
I figured out very quickly that I'd have to help protect my new sister-in-law because of that fact. She didn't say it but I could sense a lingering anxiety and fear in her, especially around men. Myself included. As I watched her timidly pluck clothes from the rack in a boutique I decided I would prove myself a good brother to her and make her see that I was trustworthy. Why it meant so much to me I'm not sure but suddenly it felt like a mission I had to accomplish without fail.
