CHAPTER I: "COUNTING LOGS"
_"Adventure! What a good thing to do to increase wisdom and experience, but in every adventure, there are decisions to be made that may lead to triumph or a great loss"_ " Here at last!" Frederick shouted with excitement in his face while looking at the beautiful scenery. Frederick had already gone to hundreds of places and had never seen such beauty in his life as where he is right now. " So stunning," he said to himself, and continued walking inside the woods. Not long after, Frederick found a cabin that looked pretty old but very sturdy. "Good afternoon, is anyone here?" He yelled, but no one answered. The man knocked on the door and noticed that it was open. He went into the cabin and rested for a bit. Frederick has been a wood chopper since he was young and continues to do so. He loves adventure and has been through a lot of journeys. He had gained lots of wisdom and experience that can be seen through the scars on his body and the white color of his hair. It was almost evening when he went outside to hunt for food. Frederick looked at the surroundings and noticed that there were piles of logs not far away from him. The logs are properly organized and there may be a few hundred of them. His curiosity made him walk toward it. As he got closer, a majestic-looking tree piqued his interest. Driven by greed, he immediately picked up his axe and started to cut down the tree. He grinned, having this in his mind, "I can sell this for an enormous amount of money". " Hard to get, eyy" he said, for the tree was so hard, but he enjoyed what he was accomplishing. Because he enjoys challenges even at his age. Tired and starving, he completed what he was doing. Moonlight shined on his face. It was already midnight. He looked up and said " This is an enchanted forest indeed ". The view was jaw-dropping skies full of stars, and trees all overgrown. And a thought that struck him was, how is it that there wasn't a single tree that had been cut down or a single trace of a path that might have been caused by pulling or pushing a log? He just stopped thinking about it and just rested on the trunk of the tree he chopped. Even though starving, he was going to hunt or forage for food but halted when he was going to stand up, for an old man suddenly appeared in front of him. " Good evening gentleman," the old man said. " Good evening sir" Frederick responded with a lot of respect " Sir are you the owner of the cabin? " Frederick continued. The old man nodded his head. " Yes indeed " the old man responded. Because of his curiosity, he asked the old man about the logs near them. "Why has not a single tree been chopped down in this area or a pathway been used for moving the logs? Yet there are a lot of logs here?". The old man smiled and looked at him straight into his eyes but didn't answer. Frederick was a bit confused and just asked another question, " Why do you have that amount of logs yet it seems you don't use them at all?" Because the logs are almost covered with moss and the old man seemed too old for heavy labor. "Curious one aren't you?" The old man replied "I use it for counting" the old man continued. Frederick's curiosity intensified and, tried to ask the old man again, but stopped once he heard the old man begin to speak again, " I use it for counting the number of people who chopped the same tree you did " the old man said while grinning. Frederick immediately stood but one of his feet was caught by the stump and started to transform into a tree and he heard the old man laughing hysterically.
