CHAPTER TWO

Chapter Two – A Private Invitation The music swelled in the background, a slow, melodic tune that wrapped around Serena and Alexander like a whispered promise. The ballroom glittered with golden lights, the air thick with holiday cheer, but she barely noticed any of it. Not when his gaze was locked onto hers. Not when his hand still rested lightly against her waist from their dance, fingers pressing just enough to remind her of his presence. And certainly not when he leaned in, voice low and deliberate. “Come with me.” A shiver ran down her spine at the quiet intensity in his tone. He wasn’t asking—at least, not in the way most men did. There was no arrogance in his words, no presumption. Only certainty. And it was that quiet confidence that made it hard to breathe. Serena swallowed, forcing herself to hold his gaze. “Where exactly are we going?” Alexander’s lips twitched. “Somewhere quieter.” That should have been her cue to step away, to shake her head and remind herself that she didn’t do this. She didn’t follow strangers into the unknown, didn’t let the pull of attraction dictate her decisions. But the way he looked at her… As if she was something worth chasing. something worth giving attention to. As if, in a room full of people, she was the only one who mattered. Serena exhaled slowly, pulse thrumming at her throat. “Okay,” she said, barely above a whisper. Alexander didn’t hesitate. He took her hand—not tightly, but firmly enough to ensure she wouldn’t change her mind. And then he led her away from the crowded ballroom, weaving effortlessly through the sea of well-dressed guests, as if he had done this a hundred times before. The Escape The moment they stepped into the hallway beyond the ballroom, the noise faded into a distant hum. The lighting was softer here, shadows stretching long across the polished floors. Serena stole a glance at Alexander, studying the sharp cut of his profile. He looked completely at ease, as if nothing about this was unusual for him. For her, however, it was something else entirely. “I still don’t know much about you,” she admitted, breaking the silence. Alexander glanced at her, amusement flickering in his dark eyes. “Is that a problem?” Serena considered this. “Depends. Are you secretly a serial killer?” His chuckle was low and warm, sending a strange thrill through her. “If I were, would I admit it?” “Probably not,” she mused. He tilted his head slightly. “And yet you followed me.” Serena smirked. “Maybe I like the thrill of the unknown.” His lips quirked at the edges. “Dangerous game.” She held his gaze, feeling the weight of those words settle between them. “Maybe.” Something shifted in his expression then, something darker, something that made her stomach tighten. But before she could overanalyze it, he turned a corner, leading them toward a set of doors at the far end of the corridor. He pushed one open, revealing a private lounge bathed in warm, golden light. The room was empty, apart from the flickering glow of a fireplace and the soft scent of aged whiskey lingering in the air. Serena hesitated in the doorway. “This is…” She trailed off, glancing around. “Unexpected.” Alexander stepped inside, loosening the collar of his dress shirt slightly. “I have a habit of finding quiet places in noisy rooms.” She arched a brow. “And you bring strangers here often?” His smirk was slow, deliberate. “No.” Serena wasn’t sure why that answer made her pulse quicken. But it did. The Space Between Them She stepped inside, the door clicking shut softly behind her. The shift in atmosphere was immediate. In the ballroom, there had been distance—noise and space that dulled the tension between them. Here, there was nothing but quiet. Nothing but him. Alexander walked toward the bar in the corner, pouring himself another glass of whiskey before glancing at her. “Would you like one?” Serena shook her head. “Champagne is about the strongest thing I drink.” He smirked. “Ah. You like to play it safe.” She folded her arms, tilting her head slightly. “Not always.” His eyes darkened, and for a moment, she thought he might step closer. Instead, he simply lifted his glass to his lips, taking a slow sip before setting it down. “So, Serena,” he murmured. “Tell me something.” She arched a brow. “Like what?” He leaned against the bar, studying her with quiet intensity. “Why did you really come here tonight?” Serena exhaled slowly, not expecting the question. “Because my friend dragged me,” she admitted. “She thought I needed some holiday spirit.” Alexander’s smirk was knowing. “And do you?” Serena shrugged. “I don’t know. Christmas has never been my favorite time of year.” He watched her carefully. “Why not?” She hesitated. “Just… personal reasons.” She expected him to push, to dig deeper, but he didn’t. Instead, he simply nodded. “Fair enough.” A beat of silence stretched between them. And then he asked, “So why did you stay?” Serena’s breath caught. There it was—the question she had been avoiding, the one she wasn’t sure she had an answer for. But the truth was simple. Because of him. Because there was something about the way he looked at her, the way he spoke, the way he made the world around them shrink until nothing else mattered. And maybe that was dangerous. But right now, she didn’t care. She stepped closer, closing the space between them just enough to feel the heat radiating off his body. “I think you already know why.” Alexander’s gaze flickered downward for the briefest second, like he was memorizing the curve of her lips. When he met her eyes again, his expression had shifted—no more teasing, no more amusement. Only intent. “You don’t seem like the type to let yourself be drawn into something uncertain,” he murmured. Serena’s breath was uneven. “And yet… here I am.” A muscle ticked in his jaw. “Yes. Here you are.” The tension between them was unbearable now, thick enough to drown in. Serena wasn’t sure who moved first—her or him—but suddenly, the space between them was gone. His fingers brushed against hers, barely a touch, but it was enough to send a shiver racing through her body. Her lips parted slightly, heart hammering in her chest. And Alexander, watching her with unreadable eyes, slowly reached up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. His touch lingered just a little too long. Serena swallowed hard. “This is…” She struggled to find the right words. “Probably a bad idea.” Alexander’s smirk was faint, his voice dangerously soft. “Maybe.” He was so close now that she could feel the warmth of his breath against her skin. But he didn’t close the distance. Didn’t push. Instead, he just watched her. Waited. Giving her a choice. And somehow, that was even more dangerous than if he had kissed her outright. Serena exhaled shakily, her pulse thrumming at the base of her throat. She could walk away. Could put space between them before this went too far. But as she stared up at him, drowning in the intensity of his gaze, she realized something. She didn’t want to. And that terrified her more than anything. -----
