Chapter Three – A Line We Shouldn’t Cross The tension in the air was unbearable. Serena could feel her pulse hammering in her throat, hear the distant crackling of the fireplace, the faint clink of ice in Alexander’s abandoned glass. But none of it mattered. Not when he was standing so close. Not when his fingers still hovered near her skin, his presence overwhelming every inch of her senses. She should move. She should step back. But she didn’t. The flickering firelight cast long shadows across his face, highlighting the sharp cut of his jaw, the way his gaze never wavered from hers. It was too much—too intense, too real. Her breath hitched, but she refused to look away. Then Alexander took a slow step back. Just one. It shouldn’t have made a difference. The space between them was still minuscule, still charged with something neither of them was willing to name. But somehow, that single step felt like a decision. A line drawn between what could happen and what shouldn’t. Alexander exhaled, raking a hand through his hair before glancing away as though trying to steady himself. “This is…” He trailed off, shaking his head. Serena let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. “Yeah.” Neither of them elaborated. Neither of them had to. They both knew exactly what this was—what it could turn into if they let it. And yet, neither of them moved to leave. --- The Crack in the Ice Alexander walked back to the bar, his movements smooth but deliberate, as if he needed the distance. He poured himself another drink, the amber liquid swirling in his glass as he took a slow sip. His fingers tightened around the crystal as he finally met her gaze. “I wasn’t expecting this,” he admitted. Serena’s lips quirked. “Neither was I.” He studied her for a moment, as though weighing something in his mind. Then he let out a low chuckle. “I should be keeping my distance.” She raised a brow. “And yet, here we are.” His smirk was slow, deliberate. “Here we are.” Serena didn’t know why she was teasing him, why she was pressing just a little harder against that unspoken tension between them. Maybe it was because she wanted to see if he would break first. Or maybe she was already breaking herself. Alexander leaned against the bar, watching her. “Tell me something.” She tilted her head. “That depends.” “On what?” “On what you’re asking.” Alexander’s smirk deepened, but there was something unreadable behind his gaze. “Do you always deflect like that?” Serena exhaled a soft laugh. “Maybe.” He studied her, his gaze flickering with something sharper, something almost amused. “I think you like control.” Serena stiffened before she could stop herself. “And you don’t?” His lips curved, slow and knowing. “Oh, I do.” Something about the way he said it sent a shiver racing down her spine. He wasn’t just talking about the conversation anymore. And she knew it. Serena swallowed, shifting her weight slightly. “So? What was your question?” Alexander took another sip of whiskey, then set the glass down with a quiet clink. “Why are you so determined to resist this?” Her breath caught. There it was. The thing they’d been circling around since the moment they met. Serena hesitated. “Because it’s a bad idea.” Alexander didn’t look away. “Is it?” She huffed out a quiet laugh, shaking her head. “You’re dangerous.” He smirked. “Not in the way that matters.” Serena gave him a pointed look. “That’s the worst kind of dangerous.” Alexander exhaled, tilting his head slightly. “And yet, you haven’t left.” Her pulse stuttered. Neither of them had moved. Neither of them had broken the spell. And Serena wasn’t sure if she wanted to. --- A Test of Willpower The silence stretched, heavy and charged. Alexander’s fingers skimmed over the edge of his glass, his eyes still locked onto hers. He looked… intrigued. Like he was waiting for something. Like he was waiting for her. Serena felt her resolve slip, just a fraction. “Tell me something else,” he murmured. She arched a brow. “You ask a lot of questions.” “You evade a lot of answers.” Her lips parted, but she had nothing to say to that. Alexander took that as an invitation. “Tell me why you looked at me like that when we first met.” Serena tensed. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” His smirk was slow, knowing. “You do.” She crossed her arms, ignoring the heat creeping up her neck. “I don’t make a habit of staring at strangers.” “Good,” Alexander said, stepping closer. “Then I wasn’t a stranger.” Serena exhaled sharply. “That’s not what I meant.” He tilted his head, watching her closely. “You sure?” The air between them thickened. Serena could feel it in the way he leaned in, not quite touching her but close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating from his body. A test. A push. And the worst part? She wanted to fail. Alexander reached for his glass again, taking a slow sip. His voice was softer when he spoke, almost teasing. “Tell me, Serena… how long have you been trying to pretend this isn’t happening?” Her stomach flipped. Serena had spent some minutes convincing herself that whatever this was, it wasn’t real. That the way her pulse raced around him was just temporary intrigue, nothing more. But Alexander saw right through her. And he was right. It had been happening from the very first moment. Serena swallowed, forcing herself to look away. “I should go.” Alexander didn’t stop her. But he also didn’t move aside. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The air between them was thick with something unspoken Serena knew she should leave, she should turn around, step away, and put as much distance between herself and Alexander as possible. But she didn't she couldn't Not when he was looking at her like that—like she was a puzzle he was determined to solve, like she was the only thing in the room Worth noticing. Alexander's fingers traced absently along the rim of his glass, but his attention never weavered "You keep looking at the door" he murmured "and yet you haven't moved". Serena inhaled sharply titling her chin up "maybe I don't like being predictable". His lips curled " or maybe you don't want to leave". The way he said it—low smooth laced with certainty—sent heat curling down her spine. she didn't answer Alexander pushed away from the bar, closing the space between them with slow, deliberate steps. he stopped just short of touching her, his presence overwhelming. "Tell me to back off serena" Her pulse pounded she should she should push him away before they crossed a line neither of them could come back from. But instead of telling him to back off, her breath hitched. instead of stepping away, she stayed rooted in place Alexander's gaze flickered down to her parted lips, before meeting her eyes again, darker now more intense "that's what I thought". his voice was rougher now his restrain thinning. And she felt it—the slow burn of it unrevealing between them. Her throat went dry "we can't". Alexander exhaled, his fingers twitching at his side like he wanted to touch her, like he was fighting every instinct to close the distance "I know". neither of them moved neither of them breathed Serena swallowed, the warmth of his body radiating into her's "so why are we still standing here?". Alexander's lips ghosted into a smirk but there was no amusement in his eyes—only hunger, only tension. " Because neither of us really wants to stop". The honesty in his voice sent another shiver down her spine. her resolve cracked. she didn't know who moved first, only that the space between them disappeared in a single breath. Alexander's hand found her waist, his grip firm possessive, her fingers curled into the front of his shirt before she could stop herself, gripping the fabric as though it was the only thing keeping upright. for a moment neither of them said a word. they just stood there—too close, too dangerous, too much—their breaths mingling, their heart pounding in unison. Then finally Alexander exhaled sharply and muttered "Damn it". And then he kissed her.
