chapter four: the point of no return The moment his lips met hers everything else disappeared. There was no hesitation, no slow build up, the kiss was raw, demanding, filled with all the tension they'd been holding back since the moment they met. Serena gasped into his mouth, her fingers tightening in his shirt, as he backed her against the nearest wall, his hand sliding up her waist, his grip possessive, like he was staking a claim he had no right to make. she should stop this. she should push him away. But God she didn't want to. Alexander deepened the kiss, his hand sliding into her hair as he tilted her head back, his touch both rough and reverent. the taste of whiskey lingered on his tongue, intoxicating, heady sending her pulse into chaos. Serena moaned softly, and that sound—shattered what ever control Alexander had left. he pressed closer, his body flush against hers, trapping her between the heat of his body and the coolness of the wall, his lips moved against hers with a hunger, that sent fire curling low in her stomach, made her knees weak. Serena's hands slid up his chest, her touch hesitance at first, then bolder as she curled her arms around his neck. she was lost. utterly and completely lost in him. Alexander broke the kiss, his breath ragged as he pressed his forehead against hers "this is a mistake". His words were rough but he didn't let go. Serena licked her lips, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "I know". neither of them moved. neither of them pulled away. Alexander's hand trailed down her spine, slow, deliberate making her shiver "Tell me to stop". Serena hesitated, her fingers still curled in the fabric of his shirt "i—" she should she really should. But instead, her lips brushed against his again, softer this time more hesitant, but just as desperate. Alexander groaned, his control snapping all over again. His hands tightened on her waist, his lips crashed back against hers, as if he couldn't help himself. the kiss deepened, turn darker, hotter, she felt the strength in his arms as he lifted her slightly, pressing her even more firmly against the wall. Serena's mind was a blur, a haze of heat and want and need. she was pass the point of no return. and she wasn't sure she cared anymore. The room was heavy with tension. Not the sharp, uncertain kind that filled the air before a mistake. No this was worse. This was the kind of tension that lingered after a mistake—after a kiss that should never have happened, after hands that have wandered too far, after the undeniable truth that this wasn't a fleeting moment of lust. And yet neither of them moved. Serena stood in front of Alexander, eyes brimming with something deep, something heated. she should have turned on her heel and left, before they did something even worst. But she hadn't. And now she was still here, her body still buzzing, her lips still tingling from the press of his mouth against hers. Alexander's gaze flickered toward the door, then back to her. his jaw tightened as if he was questioning his own decision, as if he was wondering how the hell they had let this happen. "You can still leave", he murmured but there is no conviction in his voice. Serena swallowed hard " do you want me to?". His eyes darkened A muscle ticked in his jaw. "No". The word left his lips like a confession. Her breath caught. she wasn't sure who moved first, only that suddenly, there was no more space between them. His hands found her waist, warm and firm, her fingers curled into the fabric of his shirt, holding onto him like he was the only thing keeping her steady. The heat of his breath ghosted against her skin "we are playing a dangerous game". Serena exhaled shakily"I know". His fingers flexed against her waist, as if debating pulling her closer or pushing her away."And yet you are still here". "You asked me to stay". "You could have said no". Serena met his gaze, the weight of their predicament pressing heavily on her chest. “So could you.” A slow, knowing smirk tugged at his lips. “Touché.” --- The Space Between Right and Wrong The room was dimly lit, casting long shadows across the polished wood floors. Outside, snow fell lazily against the windowpane, blanketing the city in white. Alexander released a slow breath and stepped back. Not far—just enough to put a little space between them. “Sit,” he murmured, nodding toward the sleek leather couch near the fireplace. Serena hesitated. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?” “No,” he admitted, running a hand through his hair. “But I don’t trust myself to be alone with you standing this close.” A shiver—not from the cold, but from the raw honesty in his voice—ran down her spine. She sat. Alexander grabbed a bottle of whiskey from the side table, pouring himself a drink before holding the glass out to her. She raised an eyebrow. “Trying to get me drunk?” A smirk ghosted across his lips. “I don’t need alcohol to get under your skin, Serena.” Her stomach tightened. He was right. He was already under her skin. Too deep. She took the glass anyway, the amber liquid warming her fingers. “This is a terrible idea,” she murmured before taking a slow sip. Alexander sat beside her, close enough that their knees brushed. “I know.” A silence stretched between them, charged, thick. The only sounds were the distant hum of the city outside and the crackling of the fire in the corner. Serena set her drink down and turned to face him. “Why did you ask me to stay?” His expression shifted—less teasing now, more serious. “Because I wasn’t ready to let you go.” Her throat tightened. It was a simple answer. Too simple. And yet, it unraveled her completely. She exhaled, dropping her gaze to her hands. “This isn’t smart.” “No,” Alexander agreed, his voice softer. “But it’s real.” Her breath caught. She wasn’t sure what was more dangerous—the intensity in his voice or the way he was looking at her. Like she was something worth ruining himself for. --- The Almost That Lingered The night stretched on, the tension between them refusing to ease. They talked—too much, yet not enough. They danced around what had happened, careful but not careful enough. The whiskey disappeared, their gazes held for longer than they should, and the space between them grew smaller. By the time the clock struck midnight, Serena wasn’t sure where the hours had gone. All she knew was this—leaving felt impossible. Alexander leaned back against the couch, his head tilted slightly as he studied her. “You’re tired,” he murmured, eyes flicking toward the clock. Serena sighed. “I should go.” His expression darkened, his fingers tightening into a fist against his thigh. “Yeah. You should.” Neither of them moved. The weight of what almost happened was still there, heavy, unrelenting. Serena wet her lips, the words sticking to her tongue. “I can—” But before she could finish, Alexander shifted, his hand brushing over hers. Not quite grabbing it, but not quite letting go, either. Her heart slammed against her ribs. Their eyes met. And just like before, she knew— If he kissed her again, she wouldn’t stop him. His hand traced the line of her jaw, his fingers barely skimming her skin. “Tell me to stop.” Her breath hitched. “I—” She couldn’t say it. She couldn’t force the words past her lips, because God help her, she didn’t want him to stop. Alexander exhaled roughly, shaking his head. “You’re going to be the death of me, Serena.” A slow, shaky exhale left her lips. “Right back at you.” His jaw clenched, his fingers still lingering against her skin. For a moment—just one brief, fleeting moment—he let himself lean in, his breath brushing against her lips. Serena’s heart pounded. But just as quickly, he pulled back. Not because he wanted to. But because if he didn’t, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to stop. A curse slipped from his lips, low and ragged. “Stay the night.” Serena’s stomach flipped. “Alexander—” “Not like that,” he cut in, his voice gruff. “I just… I don’t want you walking out in the snow this late.” She swallowed. “That’s not the real reason.” His gaze met hers, unguarded. “No. It’s not.” A beat of silence. Then, finally, she whispered, “Okay.” And just like that—they crossed another line, one they couldn’t erase. ---
