Shadow in the Snow

--- Chapter 3: Shadows in the Snow Paris had grown quieter, the festive music fading into the distance. Isabella walked quickly, her breath clouding in the cold air. Every sound seemed sharper tonight—the crunch of her boots, the whisper of wind, the faint drip of melting ice. Isabella (to herself): “You’re imagining things. Wolves don’t exist. You’re human. Ordinary.” But her senses betrayed her. She could hear laughter blocks away, smell roasted chestnuts from a vendor she hadn’t yet reached. The world felt magnified, alive in ways she couldn’t explain. --- A shadow moved across the street. Isabella froze. Isabella: “Who’s there?” From the darkness, a figure stepped forward. It was the same man she had seen near the fountain—tall, broad‑shouldered, his eyes glowing faintly gold. Isabella: “You again.” Lucian (calmly): “Yes. Me again.” Her heart raced. Isabella: “Why are you following me?” Lucian: “I told you—I’m protecting you.” Isabella: “From what? Fairy tales? Wolves in Paris?” Lucian’s lips curved into a faint smile. Lucian: “Not fairy tales. Truths you’ve forgotten. Truths buried in your blood.” --- She shook her head. Isabella: “No. I’m human. I bleed, I break, I cry. That’s all.” Lucian: “And yet you hear the howl. You feel the shadows. You sense me before I speak.” His words struck her like a blade. She wanted to deny them, but her body betrayed her. Isabella (whispering): “What are you saying?” Lucian: “That you are not ordinary. You are something rare. Something hidden. An enigma.” --- The word lingered in the air. Isabella’s chest tightened. Isabella: “Enigma? That’s nonsense.” Lucian: “It’s truth. You are wolf and human both. A legacy forgotten, a bloodline feared.” She backed away, shaking her head. Isabella: “No. I don’t believe you.” Lucian: “Belief doesn’t change what you are.” --- The wind howled through the alley, carrying with it another sound—a growl, low and menacing. Isabella’s eyes widened. Isabella: “What was that?” Lucian (stepping closer): “Not me. Another. They’ve scented you.” Isabella: “Scented me? I’m not—” Lucian: “You are. And they know it.” From the shadows, a pair of glowing eyes appeared. Isabella stumbled back, panic rising. Isabella: “No… no, this isn’t real.” Lucian (commanding): “Stay behind me.” --- The wolf snarled, but Lucian’s presence was overwhelming. He stepped forward, his voice low and resonant. Lucian: “She is mine. Touch her, and you die.” The wolf hesitated, its growl faltering. Then, with a final glare, it melted back into the shadows. Isabella’s knees gave way. She clutched the railing of the bridge, gasping. Isabella: “What just happened?” Lucian: “You were tested. And you survived.” Isabella: “Survived? I didn’t do anything. You did.” Lucian: “No. You stood your ground. That is enough—for now.” --- Silence stretched between them. Isabella’s voice cracked. Isabella: “I don’t want fate. I want choice.” Lucian: “Then choose to survive. Choose to embrace what you are.” She shook her head, tears burning her eyes. Isabella: “I don’t know if I can.” Lucian (firmly): “You can. Because you already have.” --- The wolf from before reappeared, snarling. Isabella’s pulse raced. Lucian stepped forward, his voice a growl of authority. Lucian: “She is mine. She is enigma. Touch her, and you die.” The wolf lowered its head and slunk back into the dark. Isabella gasped, clutching the railing. Isabella: “Why did it obey you?” Lucian: “Because I am Alpha. And because you are mine.” Her breath caught at the word. Isabella: “Yours?” Lucian: “Mate. Bound by blood, by fate, by prophecy. You are not ordinary, Isabella. You are the enigma who will change everything.”
