The Alpha's Claim

--- Chapter 4: The Alpha’s Claim The courtyard seemed alive with tension. Isabella stood at its center, lantern light flickering across her face, every gaze fixed on her. She felt like prey surrounded by predators, yet something inside her refused to bow. Isabella (to herself): “They want me to break and want me to run but I won’t.” Lucian’s voice cut through the murmurs, deep and commanding. Lucian: “She is mineand she will stand among you.” --- The Beta wolf stepped forward, his presence sharp as a blade. Beta Wolf: “You claim her, but she hasn’t shifted. She hasn’t proven herself.” Lucian (growling): “She doesn’t need to prove herself to you. Her blood speaks louder than any test.” The pack murmured again, some scoffing, others whispering. Isabella’s chest tightened. Isabella: “I don’t even know what that means. Enigma. Wolf. Mate. It’s too much.” Lucian (low, steady): “It means you are rare. It means you are mine. And it means they will learn.” --- A younger wolf, eyes bright with curiosity, stepped closer. Young Wolf: “If she is enigma, can she hear us? Can she feel the bond?” Isabella’s senses sharpened suddenly. She could hear the wolf’s heartbeat, fast and nervous. She could smell the faint musk of fur beneath his coat. Her breath caught. Isabella: “I… I can.” The pack fell silent. --- The Beta snarled. Beta Wolf: “Parlor tricks. She hasn’t shifted neither proven anything.” Lucian (commanding): “She doesn’t need to prove herself to you being mine is enough.” The Beta’s growl deepened, but Lucian’s authority was absolute. The pack lowered their heads, some reluctantly, others with reverence. --- Isabella’s voice cracked. Isabella: “I didn’t ask for this. I didn’t ask to be… whatever you say I am.” Lucian (gentle but firm): “No one asks fate for permission. It chooses. And it chose you.” --- The pack dispersed slowly, leaving Isabella and Lucian in the courtyard. Snow drifted down, settling on her hair. She shivered, not from cold but from the weight of revelation. Isabella: “They hate me.” Lucian: “They fear you. Enigma wolves are rare. Feared. Revered. You are both threat and salvation.” Isabella: “I don’t want to be feared.” Lucian: “Then be strong. And they will respect you.” --- Her voice trembled. Isabella: “What if I fail?” Lucian (steady): “ you won’t.” --- That night, Isabella lay awake in a small chamber within the sanctuary. The walls were stone, the bed simple, but her mind was anything but quiet. She replayed every word, every stare, every growl. Her senses still hummed. She could hear wolves pacing outside, smell the smoke of the fire pit, feel the pulse of something inside her—something restless, something waiting. Isabella (to herself): “This isn’t human. This is… something else. Something inside me.” --- Suddenly, pain lanced through her chest. She gasped, clutching her ribs. Her vision blurred, her heartbeat thundered. For a moment, she thought she saw claws where her hands should be, golden light flickering in her eyes. She cried out. Isabella: “Lucian!” The door burst open. He was there instantly, his presence filling the room. Lucian (urgent): “What happened?” Isabella (shaking): “I don’t know. I felt… I felt it. The wolf. Inside me.” Lucian knelt beside her, his hand steady on her shoulder. Lucian: “It’s awakening. The enigma doesn’t shift like others. It comes in waves, in fragments. But it will come.” Her tears spilled. Isabella: “I’m scared.” Lucian (softly): “Good. Fear means you understand the weight of it, you are not alone in this.” --- This left Isabella trembling in Lucian’s arms, her enigma wolf nature stirring for the first time. The pack doubts her, but fate has already begun to reveal her truth.
