The song marked the first example of a rock band playing a sitar, or any (South Asian) Indian instrument on one of their recordings. According to John Lennon in 1970, “Norwegian Wood” was his creation, with Paul McCartney assisting on the “middle eight,” a common type of bridge which refers to a section of a song with a significantly different melody and lyrics, which helps the song develop itself in a natural way by creating a contrast to what has been previously played, usually placed after the second chorus in a song.
