I read over the blood work, not believing dr Owens claims.
“A lycanthrope has been extinct for hundreds of years. A vampires blood would kill her instantly. There’s just no way this is right” I argued.
“Gregory Hammond found a way to make it work. Whether that was his intention or not, i don’t know. But her blood is made up of all 3”
I rubbed my chest as the torture she’s been inflicted with is becoming more clear each day.
“What has julian said about this?” Julians ability to close off the moment I asked him anything about zia infuriated me beyond belief.
“He was only imprisoned with her for a few weeks before she broke them out”
“A few weeks? So where’s he been for 4 years?” I asked in disbelief.
“Trying to get her back out. She was caught half way back here on their first escape. The second time it ended the same way. The third time, Julian distracted Gregory as he opened her cage, by walking straight into her prison. Zia ripped Gregory into many pieces, taking all the remaining intact body parts and burying them over the country to make sure he could never be at peace”
No wonder their bond is as strong as it is. Even in his freedom, he never gave up on her.
“However, Julian has chained her up on full moons after they found out she turns into something that can’t be stopped. Killing anything in her path”
Julian told me at the field that she’s dangerous and she can’t be here. Wanting to take her away.
I just had no idea how dangerous.
“I guess the only good thing about all this is she wants to be restrained when the change happens” I rubbed my face in frustration.
Not only frustration, but confusion. How the f**k am I meant to claim her. It’s obvious she can’t feel me now, or even before the mark.
She would’ve been distracted by me if she sensed me. But she wasn’t.
Not in the slightest.
“Don’t be discouraged, alpha. 63% of her is still wolf. Lycan at 26% which as we know is what we originated from. And 11% vampire. She is mostly still wolf”
I just wish for her pain to stop. I don’t care about what she is.
It’s going to be a challenge, that’s a given, but I’ll never take her for granted again.
“This needs to stay between us. The pack can’t find out about this”
“I was hoping you would say that, alpha” he grabbed the results from me, threading them through the paper shredder “I will do my best to figure this out. In the mean time, try not to upset her. Maybe wait to rebuild that bond”
I nodded, heading back to her room.
For some stupid reason I had thought she would still be laying where I left her.
“She’s gone for a walk with Julian. He’s showing her around” luka said.
I caught him up on zias blood work. Not really wanting to share the findings with anyone, but Lukas different. And I needed all the help I can get to try and keep this hybrid information contained.
“The marks on her must be from silver” luka pinched the bridge of his nose “lycanthrope’s react to silver the same way we react to wolfsbane”
The raised scars are certainly not normal, especially for a wolf.
“He used silver to torture her” I can’t even begin to imagine how that would’ve felt “I want all silver removed from the pack house. Everything”
There wouldn’t be much, wolves are known to have allergies to it.
It’s not common but the risk is mostly removed. Some things however do still make it in. Like jewelry. Some cutlery.
“On it. I’ve been thinking about the mate bond…” he started biting his inner cheek “what if when you marked grace, zia was already dead? Or whatever the f**k that was. Her heart stopped, she went white. To me, she was dead”
“I marked grace and everything changed. I could still feel her until that very second”
“Maybe it’s not the bond. Think about it man, some wolves don’t find their true mates until after they have chosen a mate. If marking that woman we chose in that moment meant our destined mates would suffer or die there would be a hell of a lot of women with issues, we would notice that. Not one of our female wolves has suffered anything close to a rejected bond, we would have seen it happening here. But we haven’t”
He had a point. But still doesn’t change the fact I can’t feel zia any more.
“What if when she died, the bond was reset?”
“As in im not her true mate any more?” I didn’t like the sound of that.
Even if that is possible, I’d fight it.
“As in her scents Are still reforming. Destiny can’t be changed, unless it’s agreed upon by both parties”
I narrowed my eyes at him, his confidence in his statement didn’t tell me this is an assumption, more so a fact that he already knew.
“You knew this these past 2 weeks?”
Luka stared back at me, his face the hardest I’ve seen it.
“You gambled with my sister. You deserved to feel the loss. You threw me my dying sisters body, like she was f*****g nothing and then ran to grace. But no, I didn’t know. I wish I did, I’d have enjoyed seeing you drown in your self pity more” he mumbled.
Luka and i had been close since we were pups. And though the way he spoke to his alpha, hiding the truth, could very well have him removed from the pack.
But right now, I’m his brother that severely disappointed him.
I get it. He isn’t the only one disappointed in my actions. Just knowing graces naked body was against mine as zia took her last breath is something I can never forget.
I deserved the punishment.
“I trust the moon goddess’s choices, even if yours infuriate me beyond belief. She chose you for zia. Even in your stupidity, I do unfortunately believe there’s no better man for her”
“There’s not” I confidently said.
These past 2 weeks may have made me not even know myself, but I know who I really am and there is no one better for her.
“If you ever hurt her, you will be needing a new beta. And mate. I won’t tolerate it again” he firmly said, threat in his voice.
I grabbed him by the throat, slamming him against the wall.
“And I won’t tolerate you speaking for my mate” I snapped “next time you will be finding yourself outside of the borders”
He stared back at me, long and hard, before his mouth kicked up in a cocky grin.
“That’s more like it” with a hard shove, he threw me backwards.
My feet skidding to a halt before I hit the wall.
We both prepared ourselves to shift, the moment the other was about to.
Leaving us standing there in a stand off.
“We have had an incident” julian interrupted from the door.
We both snapped our attention at him. A foul stench filtered past him.
Skunk.
Luka started heaving, holding his hand up for Julian to not continue in to the room.
“Zia wanted to get a closer look, she hadn’t seen a skunk before”
It hadn’t crossed my mind yet, what she’s missed out on over the years. A skunk should’ve been a day 1 explanation.
The stench can be smelt for weeks on someone, especially with a wolfs sense of smell.
“Where is she?” I asked.
Julian started laughing, waving his hand to follow.
