INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
"Painful Life" is a highly reflective novel that tackles the themes of trauma, loss, and survival. The novel takes the reader through the existence of Linda, a young female who has had to endure immeasurable hardship and agony. As Linda negotiates the world of her traumatized past, she has to confront the horrors that haunt her and learn to survive and cope with the reality of the devastation surrounding her.
SETTING
The story takes place in the fictional town of Ravenswood, which is set in the Pacific Northwest. Ravenswood is a tight-knit, poor town surrounded by woodlands and rugged coastlines. Ravenswood has a rich heritage, but it also suffers from poverty, drug dependency, and spousal abuse.
PLOT
The novel begins with Linda's childhood, in which she was physically and emotionally abused by her father. With time, Linda became a withdrawn, isolated individual, incapable of forming relationships or having any direction in life. When her father meets his death under tragic circumstances, Linda is faced with the horrors of the past and with the evil that has haunted her all these years.
As Linda navigates the complex web of her emotions, she meets a cast of characters who rattle her out of her presuppositions and help her find a path to healing. There's Jake, an Iraq War veteran suffering from PTSD; Rachel, a social worker turned friend; and Marcus, a suave artist who invites Linda to tap into her creative side.
Along the way, Linda has to overcome numerous challenges and setbacks, from an unhappy mother-daughter relationship to a series of failed career endeavors to a near-instinctual fear of intimacy. But as she slowly begins to fight her inner demons and learns to find support by connecting with other individuals, Linda sets out to heal her life and construct a sense of purpose and place.
