Chapter 1: The Midnight Mark
The clock struck twelve, but the silence that followed was louder than the chime. Princess Aurora stood by the tall window of the East Tower, her fingers tracing the cold glass. Outside, the sky was an unnatural shade of violet, and the forest seemed to be breathing. A sudden gust of wind blew the curtains wide, and with it came a scent—musk, rain, and something dangerous. They say a Princess shouldn't play with shadows," a low, velvety voice rumbled from the corner of the room. Aurora didn't scream. She felt a strange heat rising from her chest, a pull she couldn't explain. She turned to find a man leaning against the stone pillar. He was draped in black, but his eyes—bright, piercing gold—cut through the darkness like a predator’s. You are Kael," she whispered, her voice trembling not with fear, but with a sudden, electrifying recognition. "The Alpha of the forbidden territories. Kael stepped closer, his movements fluid and silent like a hunting wolf. He stopped just inches away, his height dwarfing her. "I am the one the prophecies warned you about, Aurora. And tonight, your father's walls cannot protect you from what you truly are. He reached out, his gloved hand hovering near her neck. "Look at the moon, Princess. It’s turning red. Your time as a human is running out. Just as he spoke, a searing pain erupted on Aurora’s shoulder. Underneath her silk gown, a birthmark she had had since childhood began to glow with a haunting, silver light. Kael’s eyes widened, a dark smirk playing on his lips. So, the secret is out," he growled, pulling her closer until their hearts beat as one. "You aren't the prey, Aurora. You are the Alpha's last secret. The Moonlight Rite The silver glow from Aurora’s shoulder wasn't just light—it was heat. It felt like a branding iron pressing against her skin, marking her as something other than human. She gasped, her knees buckling, but Kael’s strong arms caught her before she hit the cold stone floor. Steady, Princess," he murmured, his voice now a low, predatory growl. "Your transformation hasn't even begun, and yet your spirit is already fighting it. Transformation? What are you talking about?" Aurora breathed out, her vision blurring. She looked into his golden eyes and saw a reflection of a wolf—huge, powerful, and ancient. Kael didn't answer with words. Instead, he pulled her toward the balcony, forcing her to look at the moon. It was no longer violet; it had turned a deep, bruised crimson. "The bloodline of the Silver Shadows was thought to be extinct. Your father killed them all... or so he thought. He hid you in this palace, covered your scent with rosewater and silk, but he couldn't hide the moon. Suddenly, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the hallway. "Princess Aurora! Open the door!" It was the Captain of the Royal Guard. Kael's grip tightened. He looked at the door, then back at Aurora. A dark, dangerous grin spread across his face. "They are coming to 'save' you, Aurora. But if they see that mark, they will execute you just like they did the others. Your father’s laws have no mercy for werewolves. The door began to shake under the pressure of the guards. Aurora’s heart was a trapped bird in her chest. Choose now," Kael whispered, stepping onto the very edge of the balcony, the wind whipping his dark cloak. "Stay here and die as a Princess, or jump with me and discover what it means to be a Queen of the Pack, As the door burst open with a deafening crash, Kael didn't wait for her answer. He wrapped his arms around her waist and leaped into the dark, bottomless abyss below. The Abyss and the Awakening The wind screamed in Aurora’s ears as they plummeted through the darkness. For a heartbeat, she felt weightless, as if the gravity of her old life had finally let go. Below them, the mist-covered forest, loomed like a giant, sleeping beast. Just before they hit the canopy, Kael shifted. It wasn't a slow movement. It was a violent, bone-snapping explosion of fur and muscle. One moment he was a man holding her, and the next, he was a massive, midnight-black wolf. He cushioned her fall, his thick fur absorbing the impact as they crashed through the branches and hit the forest floor with a heavy thud. Aurora lay panting on the damp earth, the scent of crushed pine and wet soil filling her senses. Her body felt like it was on fire—especially the mark on her shoulder. She looked up, and her breath caught in her throat. Standing over her was the wolf. He was terrifyingly large, nearly the size of a small horse. His golden eyes glowed with an intelligence that was far from animalistic. He let out a low, vibrating huff, and before her eyes, the fur began to recede, the bones clicking back into place. Within seconds, Kael stood there again, naked from the waist up, his skin steaming in the cool night air.
