The voices.
Maddie wakes up in a panic, frantically looking around her desk for her phone. She finds it under her math textbook and picks it up to find out that its 10:17. She looks out the windows, its pitch black outside. She decides to leave her empty classroom and go look for someone, but quickly realizes that the hallway is equally empty. She calls out many times but to her dismay, there were no answers. She walks down the dimly lit hallway, the only source of light being the piercing red glow of exit signs. She packs her backpack and makes her way to the front doors, they were locked. She tries all of the other doors and was exasperated when she found out they were locked as well. Confused as to what's happening, she decides to call her mother. Her fingers tremble as she dials the number. After 4 rings, the call disconnects. Annoyed, she calls again but gets the same result. Figuring that she would be stuck here overnight, she decides to wait the night out in the cafeteria. She hasn't eaten since breakfast so she pulls out some change from her bag and goes up to the vending machine. As she's buying a pack of fruit snacks, she sees a figure standing behind her in the glare of the glass. Her stomach clenches as she stands there, paralyzed with fear. The figure behind her is ominous and unmoving. After what felt like hours, she finally turns around. There's nothing there. Using the light omitting from the vending machine, she guides herself to where she had previously left her bag. She bends over to take her phone out of it and out of the corner of her eye, she she's various black figures lurking in the shadows. She decides to ignore them, since she knows that this can happen when she's off her meds. On her way to the door, she passes the vending machine once more. She notices her shadow on the floor and is startled to find other shadows, projected by nothing, attacking and ripping her own the shreds. She doesn't know what to do, but her instincts tell her to run. Her feet carry her to the bathroom she locks herself in, listening closely. There's nothing wrong with her phone; the battery life is okay, its not faulty but still - no signal. Maddie paces back and forth as panic floods her system. She turns to the sink, turn on the faucet and cups the pouring cold water and splashes her face in hopes to eliminate the demons churning behind her eyes. As she looks up in the mirror, she sees her reflection but it doesn't quite feel like her own. She stairs a little longer and she thought she saw it blink. uncertain, she takes a step back. The reflection starts talking to her. “What are you doing here, you should be getting the rope” it said. Maddie was terrified. Not sure what to do, she stayed silent. “What are you waiting for? Go! Before they kill you themselves” Maddie decided to answer. “Why would they kill me? Who would kill me” “Your demons, of course! Who else?” Her reflection walked away laughing hysterically , revealing pointed, sharp rotten teeth. “BZZ”. That was a text alert. She looks down at her phone and sees that she got a message from herself. “Do it” She got the same message, over and over again. They just kept flooding her phone and finally, Maddie decided that her reflection was right all along. Why would she wait for demons to kill her? It just made sense that she would do it herself. Maddie picked up her bag, unlocked and opened the bathroom door and led herself out of the cafeteria and into the nearest storage closet. Upon arrival, she picked up an electrical wire and tied it to a pipe. She stood up on a stool and tied the other end to her neck. She was going to jump but she had doubts. She didn't know if what she was going to do was the right thing. She heard voices in the back of her head. “Come on! Hurry! There coming for you!” She immediately saw from the bottom of the door frame black figures standing there. They started clawing it, twisting the doorknob aggressively trying to break in. Maddie knew now she had to kill herself before the others did. She was scared to do so she decided to countdown from 3. 3,2,1. She kicked the stool from underneath her feet and was left dangling in the air. A middle aged woman wearing a polyester pantsuit sat in front of a low budget local news television set. She adjusted her papers and looked at the camera with a solemn just as authentic as her suit. “Earlier today at Liberty High School; a student, Maddie Clearwater was found by professor Catherine Wood hanging by electrical wire from a storage room sealing. She was pronounced dead at 11:07 a.m from asphyxiation. We've interviewed some students who knew Maddie and we have a statement from her mother, Penelope. Samantha?” Another woman stands in front of the school with a group of students. “Thank you Olivia. I'm here at Liberty High with a few of the students who witnessed the tragedy. So, I understand that you saw Maddie this morning suddenly leave your math class?” “yeah, she left while screaming down the hallway. She was crazy!” another student said “I saw her in the caf, I guess I kinda spooked her cause she screamed and left without taking her food” The tallest student spoke up “I was with miss Wood when she found her. We tried to open the door, but it was jammed. I ended up having to knock it down. I was too late.” “Thank you, now we are going to hear what Penelope Clearwater has to say.” She was sitting in her living room with another person from the local news, along with a sound team and camera man. “My daughter is Schizophrenic. She's been off her medicine for 4 days because she ran out and she was waiting on the pharmacy to refill her bottle. I didn't know she was going to be this bad. I didn't think she was ever going to do this!” Penelope said, sobbing. ”She also called me a couple times today, she kept hanging up right when I would answer her. I sent her a text that said to call me and tell me what was going on but she never answered.” After this the cameras left, leaving her alone to mourn. Penelope had a good life. She worked for National bank and had a nice cozy home. Her husband was away on a business trip for the rest of the week and couldn't come home. She felt very alone. She hated herself for letting this happen to her daughter. She was her responsibility, how could she let this happen? She let her down, and the rest of the family as well. She didn't eat that night. She spent it crying in Maddies room, looking at all her stuff just trying to figure out what Maddie had seen today to drive her to kill herself. That's when she saw it. Or what she thought she saw. She thought she had seen a black figure in the corner of her eye. She looked at where she thought she had seen it, Maddie's closet. There was nothing there. She decided to go to her bedroom and get some sleep because after a long day, her mind was playing tricks on her. When she was brushing her teeth, She saw it again. But this time, she was staring right at it. When she looked into the mirror, she saw herself but extremely pale and with a bruise all around her neck. Penelope let out a scream but before she could do anything else, it was talking to her. “You let her die. What kind of a mother are you? You don't deserve to live and you know that.” Penelope had gone pale. It looked as if she was in some sort of a trans. Her face went blank and all she responded was “You're right.” The reflection walked away with a big smile, revealing razor sharp, dirty teeth. Without saying anything else, she went to her garage and grabbed her 50ft extension cord. She went back inside, her face was still showing no emotion. She went to the kitchen, climbed on top of her counter and tied one end of the cord to her ceiling fan and proceeded to tie the other end around her neck. She stood there, looking down at the floor. Voices flooded her head, all saying different things. “Your a horrible mother” “You don't deserve happiness” “Do it before you ruin someone else's life” “You will never see her again, you're going to hell.” Overwhelmed by sadness, Penelope was going to jump. But she had a doubt. Maybe Maddie would have wanted her to live. Maybe Maddie was in a better place. “She hates you. She wants you to jump because she wants you to feel her pain” The voices all said, all at the same time. Penelope could not take the guilt anymore. She was to scared to jump, so she decided to countdown from 3. 3,2,1.
