PROLOGUE
Do you believe that destiny will give you what you deserve? Well, if destiny could be touched by Mallory Addison Finley, she would smack it. Why? Simply because destiny is her worst enemy.
Could you imagine it? She’s in her mid-twenties, yet she couldn’t have a decent and a nice job. Honestly speaking, she isn’t smart, and her looks aren’t beyond average either. She is also small and mistaken for a teenager because her height doesn’t match her age. She had wavy hair with curls on the edge and her eye color is butterscotch.
Because her life was complicated, she learned to be an independent woman at a young age. When she said it was complicated, she meant her life sucks.
She reminisced about her bittersweet past. Fifteen years ago, her world was turned upside down when her parents tragically died in a car accident. She was left with nothing and was forced to live on her own.
In a blink of an eye, everything in her life vanished into thin air, as if continuing to live was a waste of time. Everything she remembered having only became a part of her memory. They slipped away all at once. Their company went bankrupt, and the best option was to move to another town to run away from loan sharks that were chasing her to charge her on her father’s debt.
She grew up under the care of Eleanor Finley, her reliable godmother, who adopted her after discovering about her parents’ deaths. Like her, her godmother had been living alone since her husband died after a year of their wedding and they had no children.
Under one roof, Mallory and Eleanor shared a home. They considered themselves to be family. They formed a special bond, a mother-and-daughter relationship. However, as Mallory entered ninth grade, her godmother whom she considered to be her mother, passed away. It turned out her godmother had a serious illness that she had kept hidden from her. She was deeply saddened by her death because she was indebted and grateful to her for taking care of her and being with her, even if only for a short time.
Because Mallory was back on her own, she took on various jobs to make ends meet. She assumed she would have and live a good life after graduating from college, but she was mistaken. Yet, in her life full of twists and turns, she remained unbreakable. Despite her scars from her past, she appeared unbothered by loneliness and melancholy. She was, indeed, a bold woman. She was indestructible.
“I think I’m cursed, Tiff,” she said tearfully to her friend, Tiffany Hutton, while drinking coffee at a coffee shop near the company where the woman worked.
Her best friend had just come home from a business trip, so they decided to get together to celebrate her return.
“No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to catch a break. Every job interview I go to, I fail. I’m beginning to think that maybe I’m just not cut out for this.”
Mallory tried to apply for a job for the nth time, but as expected, it didn’t go well. The company texted her to inform her that she had failed to pass the interview. It wasn’t as if it was the first time, but she couldn’t seem to get used to it.
Tiffany rolled her eyes in exasperation. “You’re not cursed, Maddie. You just haven’t found the job for you yet. I know it’s not easy, but you can’t give up. You have so much talent, and the right opportunity is out there waiting for you. Don’t lose hope.”
She pursed her lip, her fingers tapping on the table. “Then, what job is perfect for me?” she mused aloud. “At the age of twenty-seven, I should be working to become stable and living the best life there is, but here I am, jobless and penniless.”
“Let me think…” Her best friend pretended to be contemplating while holding its chin. “Perhaps digging graves is really for you,” Tiffany quipped.
Mallory scowled and shot her friend a sharp glare. “Tsk! It’s not funny! You’re not making me feel better.”
She shook her head and frowned, becoming intrigued as Tiffany rummaged through her bag. Her friend handed her the newspaper and pointed to a large front-page, which read the details in the headline.
The CEO of Luxe Group Incorporation is hiring for a secretary. If you are interested in the position, please contact us or visit our company for the application.
“Try applying here,” Tiffany suggested. “Who knows? You might just land the job of your dreams.”
Instead of being happy, Mallory became even sadder. She was eager to give it a shot, but she knew the company. It is one of the most famous companies in the country, and they sure had high standards for their employees. To her dismay, it would be difficult for her to obtain employment.
“In the company you’re working at?” she asked.
“Yes! Why? Is there a problem with that?”
She waved both her hands dismissively. “No, thank you.”
Tiffany’s eyes widened in surprise. “Why not? Just keep trying until you get a job!” she urged.
“I’m not sure, Tiff. Do you think I can get in there? If they see my record, they might drag me out. They wouldn’t want an inexperienced employee in their company, right?”
It caused her friend to sigh. “Come on, Maddie! Don’t look at it in a negative way! You won’t know unless you try. There’s no harm in trying, and why bother worrying when you have nothing to lose?”
She crossed her arms. “What do you mean, there will be no loss? If I don’t get the job, my self-esteem will plummet even further.”
“Well, then maybe you should just dig graves for a living! You’re hopeless,” Tiffany muttered, rolling her eyes in frustration.
Mallory gazed at her friend, stunned. She contemplated whether Tiffany was truly her friend, considering how dissimilar they were.
She sipped her coffee and let out a problematic sigh, staring out into the clear blue sky, mulling over her friend’s tempting offer.
Should she take this job? Or will she let the opportunity slip by?
