Tann's porridge this morning made me want to show him how to cook a home-cooked meal properly. On the way back, I asked Tann to do some shopping at the supermarket. I cooked a simple dish that I could make without his help. The man, seated at the dining table, gazes excitedly at the bowl of tofu, seaweed and minced pork soup in front of him as well as a plate of tuna salad.
Tann hurries to take his cutlery and begins to eat. "Oh, Doc... please marry me."
This man crosses the line! "No. Do me a favor and go find a woman who can cook."
"Who needs a wife when I have you?" Hungry, Tann gobbles up a huge tablespoon of rice.
Now he's going too far. "Shut up and eat. Let's finish talking. I told you not to say that sort of thing or I swear I'll force you to. Keep that in mind. You're not a fool, I thought we were clear on that." After giving my ultimatum, I see him a little dejected. "Okay sorry."
After finishing the dishes and putting everything back in it's place, we go to the living room sofa. Tann sits up crossing his legs and rubbing his chin after I finish telling him Fai's story.
"Since you're from here, do you know any mafia?" I ask him.
"I have my ideas. Only a handful of rich bastards offer this kind of money loan. As far as I know, Hong, the owner of the building I'm renting for my school is one of them. But he's honest. He couldn't be involved with those thugs. There's also this man who owns a used car business in Downtown. I don't know much about him. And the other person. is your friend, Prosecutor Songsak..."
My heart skips a beat when he says his name.
"His family has been very rich for a few generations. Their reputation created a certain fear. I heard that his uncle killed someone and he is still free." Tann is still thinking "His relationship with the police made him very powerful."
"But he was kidnapped." I protest quickly.
"That's true. However, I still think there's a trick. We can't say anything as long as we don't have any evidence to tell us whether or not he's still alive. He can. hide in the shadows and organize everything."
I grab Pert's phone from my pocket in spite of myself. "It's impossible."
"I don't know. This is just my point of view. Do you have a sheet of paper? I'll take some notes." I give him one that I just took out of my bag. Tann lists the names that we have mentioned. "I'll take care of it. You're not from here; you don't know the area. I'll go talk to Hong, the car salesman, and your friend's family. I can find some leads on who could be the leader of the kid's group. Your job is to try to contact Dr. Fai's brother and ask him who his lender is."
Tann stares at me. "But are you sure we're on the right track?"
I cross my arms and close my eyes. "I don't know if we're headed in the right direction. But at least—we've got a few things to look into."
"Did you ever think it could be some kind of revenge?"
I widen my eyes, "What do you mean?"
"I mean by that, it could all be a plan to discredit you, destroy your life..." Tann taps with the pen on the paper. "It's just a guess. Maybe, maybe not. Do you have any enemies?"
"No, I don't," I place my hands on my thighs, meditating.
"Not an enemy, but maybe someone who is mad at me..."
Tann nods, "Who?"
"I don't think it's him, he might hate me, yes, but Janejira has nothing to do with him."
"Just tell me."
I remain silent for a while. It was my mistake, a mistake due to my arrogance. "It happened when I moved here to work for the government..."
...
Two years ago.
I am summoned to a crime scene, in a one-story half-timbered house in the middle of a longan garden. I get out of the van, Anun on my heels. He was already working here before I arrived with Dr Apirak who had just resigned. Since moving here, this was the third time that I, Dr. Bunnakit, a dynamic forensic physicist, fresh out of medical university, had taken part in an investigation into field.
Captain Tu makes his way to me with a big smile. "Hello, Dr. Bunnakit."
"What a beautiful morning Captain!" I answer him by looking at the longan garden.
"Straight to my head, just at dawn," Captain Tu told me, wriggling his eyebrows. "Think of it as your ritual of initiation."
I laugh, "It's much better than hazing parties if you ask me; at least no one is forcing me to sing all of the time here."
"Heh-heh, I really like you." The captain guides me to the house. "The victim is Wandee Auykham. Age 54 years old. The body was discovered at 8:15 am this morning. The neighbors heard a gunshot. When they got here, she was lying in a pool of blood. A gun in her right hand. Her son confirmed to us that she was right-handed."
"Is the gun still here?" I asked, turning around.
"Yes. Do you want the forensic science to remove it? We've finished taking the pictures. I can take care of it."
Captain Tu makes this offer to me as if he can read my mind. I'm worried the gun will go missing. Nothing more.
"I'll take a quick look and ballistics can pull the weapon out."
I enter the house. The first thing I see is the body of a middle-aged woman lying on her back on the floor—a pool of blood haloed under her head. On the wall behind the body, large traces of blood were dripping. In the right hand of the body was the gun.
"I'll have ballistics remove the gun so you can work on the body." Captain Tu goes out to talk to the agent whose head swings up and down.
Cause of death: gunshot wound. But what is the reason for death? It looks like suicide on the surface. After the gun is removed, Anun and I put on our gloves and go to examine the body to estimate the time of death.
I try to move the joints of the phalanges. "Very weak; she died less than two hours ago." I move to look at the bullet wound on her head. It was caused by a bullet from a handgun. The bullet entered through the right temple, the shape of the wound is symmetrically oval. Exiting the irregularly shaped bullet on the left temple were small pieces of brains. I see the gray ring around the wound, the shooting range should not exceed 15cm.
Everything coincides. The only thing left for me to do is to proceed with the GSR on her hand to check if she has pressed the relaxation itself. "Has the victim been having any problems lately?" I turn to ask Captain Tu.
"Her son said she was in debt. And lately the price of longan has gone down too."
I stand up. "I need you to send the body to the hospital for further examination..." I smiled at the captain confidently. "But I'm pretty sure it's suicide. It all coincides and the motive is clear."
Suddenly I hear mayhem outside. Everyone is going to where the noise is coming from at the same time.
"Oi!!! Kham!!" A man screams. "Kham will jump into the well! Help me!!!"
"What is this mess!?" Captain Tu. Anun and I remove our gloves and follow.
Kham or Kham Auykham, Wandee's husband, tries to jump into the well behind the house. The man who shouted is a villager who had just passed him. He saw him climb onto the window sill of his own house and then run to the well. Everyone had managed to save him in time.
"Boo-hoo. It's my fault. She killed herself because of me. Because of me." Kham is sitting on the floor and weeping pitifully. According to the interrogation, Kham and Wandee had had a big argument the day before. He was gone and had slept somewhere. Once he returned, he found his house was overrun with neighborhood and police. He walked to the back of the house to look into the house through the window and saw his wife's dead body. The man also heard what I said about Wandee taking her own life.
That night, Kham was found dead, hanging from a longan tree in the garden. And later that day a man surrendered, confessing to shooting Wandee and putting the gun in her hand. The human hand has tested positive for the residue of powder. He was the one who pulled the trigger.
The grieving son of Kham was resentful of the disappearance of his father which should not have happened. He sent me a death letter denouncing my inaccurate statement of cause of death. However, nothing happened after that. I haven't heard from him again and the man who killed Wandee has been put on trial.
...
"Do you remember her son's name?" Tann takes note of the details I had just told him on the paper.
"His name is Kopku Auykham," I hiss, "Yes, I remember his name perfectly; he really scared me back then."
Tann nods, "Okay, I'll ask around where Kopku is and what he's doing right now... Is there anyone else? Someone who could. have a similar grudge against you? "
I'm thinking. Anyone blame me? Someone who hates me so much that he wants to control my life to the point of killing to get involved in this mess and terrorize me in every possible way.
For no reason a name comes to mind.
Tarr.
I glance at Tann, who continues to stare at me.
"Do you think that love could make someone hate the person they loved and come back for revenge even after several years?"
Tann's eyebrows rise to the point where they reach the beginning of her hairline. "Why should you blame someone you love? Unless, of course, you betrayed that girl. Or you let her down in the most horrible way. That woman must be a psycho if she holds a grudge at that level."
"It might sound improbable, but if you want to see the bigger picture to find out who the culprit is," I stop for a moment to take a breath. "I dated a guy once..."
