Her Sudden Decision

1611 Words
"Breathe Sierra, Breathe." Those were the words that Reya kept on chanting repeatedly as they both scurried their way through the busy hallways of the the hospital in search of the doctor or Nora's ward. She had left everything she was doing the minute the doctor told her that her sister was in a critical condition. Luckily for her, Reya had taken matters into her own hands by driving her down there. She couldn't even think properly at the moment and if she had decided to take matters into her own hands by driving down here, she would've been done for. It would've been her funeral instead of her sister. Just why on earth does bad things always happen to her? "Doctor!" Sierra hollered at the middle aged man who just walked out of a ward that resembled a theater. He was reviewing some papers but he handed it over to his nurse almost immediately. "Nora?...my sister...how is she?" "Have you tried to reach out to your father yet?" He asked instead, his gaze staring down at her pitifully. She couldn't tell what he was thinking exactly or why he wasn't telling her anything yet. "Is Nora okay?" She asked instead. He shook his head negatively. "Nora is not okay. At a time like this, you need your family to support you. You can't do this alone Sierra. You're just a child for goodness sake. Where is your father?" He deadpanned, his voice taking a serious tone. Now, it was her turn to shake her head negatively. Tears welled up in her eyes in an instant. Why was he requesting to see her Father? Why wasn't he telling her anything? Is Nora okay? Is she dead? These and many other questions wandered through her mind and she couldn't bring herself to answer any one of those questions. "H-He..." She hiccuped. "He's not taking my calls and i don't know what to do. The truth is, he hasn't been taking my calls for sometime now. I don't know if he's abandoned us or something." She breathed shakily. "I tried to call him on my way here but it's the same thing. I've been trying to give myself a little hope but now, i don't think it's working anymore. So please, tell me how my sister is." The doctor stared at her in silence, not knowing what to say or how to comfort her. He had never expected this sort of behavior from his own friend. On his own, he had done all that he could to help the poor girl but even he knew that it wasn't enough. He felt terrible and didn't know how to break down the news of her sister's condition to her. She was just too young to handle a situation as magnificent as this one. He needed to speak to an adult. Sierra was just a kid. "She's not doing good. She's deteriorating." He dropped the bombshell. "She needs to get the surgery done in less than twenty four hours or we'll loose her. We've done all we can to sedate her but I'm afraid that it's not enough. She needs this surgery urgently. I'm sorry but there's no other way to tell you this." Sierra's heart skipped a beat and the world around her went silent. She felt numb to the bone and she couldn't bring herself to make sense of anything going on right now. If it hadn't been for Reya's comforting hands trying to calm her down and steady her, she would've assumed that she was lost in a trance or dead. "Is there nothing we can do?" She heard Reya's fragile voice from her deep, cold and blurry world while she still stood there unmoved. It felt like her whole world had come to a standstill. "I'm afraid not." Came the doctor's sharp reply. "The only thing you can do is deposit the money for treatment. Without that, I'm afraid to say this but my hands are tied." "What are we gonna do?" Reya asked no one in particular. She was panicking and didn't know exactly how to manoeuvr the situation. "And the money we have isn't close to half of the initial payment. Say something Sierra." Reya tugged at Sierra's arm but she was too stunned to speak. The wheels in her head was turning and her brain was calculating. Her sister would die. Her sister was in critical condition. Those were the only thoughts bouncing through her head like a broken record on repeat. She couldn't bear the thought of it. She didn't want it to happen. There was nothing she could do to remedy the situation in time. Even if she wanted to raise the money for treatment, she possibly couldn't do it in less than twenty four hours. Her hands were also tied. On one hand was Nora and on the other hand was the last thread that held her dignity. In as much as she didn't want to, she didn't have that much of a choice either. She had to pick and clearly make a decision even though it wasn't favourable on her part. It wasn't what she wanted but there was no other way. "Make the necessary preparation for Nora's surgery." She blurted out suddenly, shocking herself and even the doctor who looked from her to Reya, confused. "I'll deposit the money for her surgery before the stipulated time frame." The doctor was tempted to ask a lot of questions but he somehow refrained from doing so. Maybe he would give her the benefit of doubt. Pulling herself away from Reya's grasp, Sierra faced her. "Stay here and keep an eye on Nora. I'll be right back." She ordered before rushing out of the hospital in search of Sergio. She would've sworn that he followed her down here. If her hunch is correct then there is no way he would've left her to come here all alone. He was around here somewhere and was definitely keeping tabs on her from afar. Outside the hospital, she found him standing at a secluded spot observing the area with his hands neatly folded behind his back as though he was waiting patiently for someone. She stopped running and slowly walked up to him. She was right, he had indeed followed her here. She knew that he had done so based on that man's orders so it'd be foolish to even ask. He had ordered him to keep an eye on her. The minute he saw her approaching him, he bowed his head slightly to acknowledge her presence. "What can i help you with, miss Sierra? Do you need anything?" He asked, noting her emotional state of distress. He could tell by a single glance that she wanted something even without her saying anything. She swallowed hard. "Call your boss." She ordered plainly, not cutting through corners. There was no point in hiding it anyways. "I need to speak with him and it's urgent." He nodded and pulled out his phone to dial his number. He did say that if she wanted help, she should ask for it right? As she waited, she felt her nervousness explode to the point of consuming her whole. This was her final chance to back out because if she picked up that phone to talk to him, there's no going back. She wouldn't be able to take her words back. She would be stuck on it for life. Was it really worth it? Her intrusive thoughts are interrupted when Sergio stretched out his phone to her. "He's ready to talk to you." He informed her. At first she swallowed. She was about to sell herself to the devil. She was about to sacrifice herself for her sister's life. Should she go ahead with it? With shaky hands, she took the phone from his hands and placed it on her ears. The sound of her heart beating, thudding against her chest could be heard from a million miles away. Taking a few steps away from Sergio, she calculated her words and thought of how to say them. She had shunned this man and now like a lost puppy, she was crawling back to him for help. She felt ashamed and utterly useless but what's the point? There's literally nothing she could do about it right? "Is this some kind of breathing contest Piccola?" His deep and husky voice came through. It was supposed to sound like a tease or humour but you can never tell because there was no sign of humour in his words and she was not in the mood listen or figure out if it was. "Or are you going to tell me why you wanted to speak to me all of a sudden?" "I accept your offer." She declared openly and for a minute, there was utter silence. "But before that, i need your help." She went on, her voice breaking. She had been trying to hold back her tears so that it doesn't fall. She had been trying to be strong but now she couldn't help it. This was her breaking point. "I'm willing to pay back no matter what it'll cost me—" "Sergio would handle everything concerning your sister's surgery." He informed her, interrupting her intended speech. "Consider it done." She wanted to ask how he knew about it but she figured that Sergio must've told him about it. "I'll be back from Italy in two days to pick you up myself so get ready because in two days, you are officially mine Miss Sierra Delavine. You will belong to me." He said with an air of finality.
