CHAPTER 1 – Arranged Marriage
“No, you can't do this to me! I can't just accept an arranged marriage like this, Father. Please, you need to think it through. I'm your daughter, for crying out loud!” Arabella's voice wavered as she spoke, her words desperate and strained. Mr. Edmund Whitmore, sitting at his large mahogany desk, didn’t even glance up from the papers before him. His pen moved across the page with practiced efficiency, the scratch of it barely breaking the tension in the room. “Enough, Arabella. This is not a discussion,” he replied, his tone as hard and cold as the marble floors beneath his feet. Arabella’s heart skipped a beat. She had always known her father was distant—always too consumed with business, too focused on his wealth and reputation—but this? This was something beyond cold. This was heartless. She clenched her fists, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. How could he do this to her? She was his daughter, his only child. Yet he treated her like she was just another pawn in a game he had long stopped playing fairly. “Father, please,” she pleaded again, her voice breaking with emotion. “You can’t expect me to marry him. Mr. Ashford is an old man! He is ruthless, controlling, and has no interest in me. I… I don’t even know him. How could you—?” “Arabella,” Mr. Whitmore cut her off sharply, his voice so cold that it sent a shiver down her spine. “I said enough. This is for the family’s benefit. For the future of this household.” He paused, letting his words sink in. “Do you not understand that we need this union? Mr. Ashford is a powerful man. His wealth and influence could change everything for us.” Arabella’s chest tightened. She could feel the overwhelming weight of her father’s words bearing down on her. The future of the household? Her father, the man who had raised her, was willing to sacrifice her happiness for the sake of his own desires. Arabella struggled to swallow the lump in her throat, but the pain didn’t stop. Her father had never loved her mother, and now, it seemed, he didn’t love her either. Her mind raced, trying to process the situation. Was she really just a bargaining chip? Did he care nothing for her happiness? Her father’s indifference was like a slap in the face. She had lost her mother years ago. The woman who had once been her protector, her safe harbor, was gone. And now, her father was pushing her toward a life she couldn’t imagine, a life filled with fear and control. Arabella opened her mouth to protest again, but before she could speak, her younger stepsister, Celeste, chimed in, her voice laced with sugar-coated politeness. “Arabella, it’s for the betterment of the family,” Celeste said, looking at her with a false look of concern. “You’ve always been so independent, so strong-willed. Don’t you want to see our family prosper? Think of all the benefits this marriage will bring. You won’t have to worry about anything, and neither will we. Father is only trying to do what’s best for you, for all of us.” Arabella’s eyes narrowed, her hands trembling with a mixture of anger and disbelief. Celeste. Of course, she would side with her mother and their father. After all, Celeste had always been the perfect little daughter—the obedient one, the one who did everything they asked without question. The one who stood to gain the most from this marriage. Arabella could see the smug look in Celeste’s eyes, the way she almost seemed to relish the situation. She didn’t understand, didn’t feel the weight of the decision the way Arabella did. But Arabella was done trying to reason with them. “For the betterment of the family?” Arabella repeated bitterly, her voice now trembling with frustration. “You mean your mother’s ambitions, don’t you? She wants this marriage more than I do. She doesn’t care about me. She just wants her place in the higher social circles.” Celeste’s face paled, but she quickly recovered, forcing a smile. “That’s not true, Arabella. You know Mother cares about you.” Arabella’s laugh was bitter. “Oh, I’m sure she does. She cares about my position and my name. But not about me.” Celeste recoiled at the harsh words, her brow furrowing in confusion. “You’re being dramatic, Arabella; Father is only trying to secure the family’s future. He knows what he’s doing, you should trust him.” Arabella turned away from her stepsister, her anger boiling over. “Trust him? After everything he’s done? You honestly think I can trust a man who’s willing to sell me off to the highest bidder?” Lady Evelyn, Arabella’s stepmother, who had been sitting quietly in the corner, finally spoke up, her voice smooth and composed. “Arabella, don’t be so dramatic. Your father is making a decision that will benefit all of us. You see, Mr. Ashford is a powerful man, and he will provide you with everything you'll need. You’ll have security, wealth, and status.” She leaned forward slightly, a thin smile on her lips. “What more could you want?” Arabella’s stomach churned at the words. Security? Wealth? Status? Those were things her father had always valued, but they meant nothing to her. What she wanted—what she needed—was freedom, love, and the right to choose her own destiny. “I don’t want Mr. Ashford’s money,” Arabella replied sharply, her voice strong despite the tear that escaped from her eye. “I don’t want his wealth or his security. I want my life, and I want to make my own decisions.” Mr. Whitmore let out a sigh, clearly exasperated by his daughter’s emotional outburst. “Enough, Arabella. I’ve made my decision. You will marry Mr. Ashford. End of discussion.” Arabella’s heart sank as she realized that her father was unwavering, unmoved by her pleas. The pain in her chest grew heavier, and she felt the familiar sting of helplessness. Was there truly no way out of this? As she stood there, trying to contain the flood of emotions threatening to overtake her, she noticed Celeste looking at her with something resembling smug satisfaction. Arabella’s hands clenched into fists. She wasn’t going to let them win. She couldn’t. If her father thought she would bow to this arranged marriage without a fight, he was gravely mistaken. Arabella was determined to find a way out—whatever it took.
