Chapter 4It was late afternoon when Rachel and Phillip finally reached the ship. Phillip helped Rachel out of the carriage, while Horace signaled two young seamen to fetch their trunks. After Horace gave Rachel a polite nod and bow, and Phillip a quick pat on the back, he jumped up into the driver's seat of the carriage. Rachel watched as Horace started down the busy wharf and out of sight. “He has to return the carriage and get to his ship. His ship leaves in a couple of days, so he has plenty of time. Plus, I might add, my father paid him handsomely.” Phillip led Rachel toward the swaying, wooden ramp that came from the ship and rested on the worn, wooden dock.
