Amanda
After dinner, Hannah took me to a room, to my shock, it was the empty room of her daughter. “I’ve always asked the maids to clean it up daily because I’m still waiting for her return…” She muttered sadly with a smile and I shook my head.
“No… I’m sorry but I can’t… I can’t stay…”
“No, you’re doing me a favor by staying here. At least I know with you in the room, it won’t be cold and empty… It’ll be warm even when she returns,” Hannah muttered emotionally and it got me teary. I had no option but to nod and thank her profusely for the kindness she was showering on me.
“Your work starts at 9 am, the driver will leave the house at 8:30 maximum, get dressed tomorrow and I’ll pack your hair for you. Goodnight dear, get some sleep” Hannah urged and I nodded, smiling as I watched her leave.
“Wow” I muttered to myself, wondering if this was all real. Was I really going to forget about the pack and think about my new life and new family?
“Mom, I know yoI’ll be missing me a lot now and would be blaming yourself for things you can’t control but I just hope you’re fine… I hope you’ll never feel sad because of me” I whispered, it was more for the moon goddess to protect mom.
I slumped on the bed, holding my head as I wondered why I felt so tired without doing any job. I remembered the jewelry I had taken from dad’s office and I opened the shopping bag, only to see it neatly folded.
I picked it up, staring at the only thing I had from my family. Families are meant to stick together but I broke the rules, I wish I had something worth staying for.
“How is mom doing now? Who’s everybody… They would be disappointed, yes but would they try to search for me? How would they take my disappearance?” I questioned myself endlessly till I slept off.
I woke up as early as five am and was ready to dash down only to see that everywhere was still very dark. I used the restroom and was amazed with the products inside.
There were soaps of different types, same for the toothpaste and also new brushes and sponge. It was furnished as if five strangers were coming.
I had my bath and walked outside, dressing up very slowly. I was trying to pass time but today wasn’t moving a bit. I wore a black pants with a large black vest and a large black coat.
I stared at myself in the mirror and sighed, the clothes fit me perfectly. Hannah was doing a lot for me… I’ll definitely try my best in finding her daughter.
It’ll be my appreciation to her for all she has done for me. I glanced at the clock and it was 7:30, unable to keep staying inside, I stepped out, walking down shyly as I bowed when a maid greeted me.
“You’re up early, let’s head back, I’ll help you fix your hair” Hannah announced, she was in the sitting room, dressed in a short gown and heels.
“Good morning” I muttered and she smiled at me before leading me upstairs back. We entered the room and she asked me to sit.
“I love packing my daughter’s hair, I could remember paying special attention in the saloon just so I can do this everyday” Hannah muttered with a sad smile as she began packing my hair.
She packed it to the middle, braided it before knotting it around and using a hair clip to hold it. “You look beautiful” She commented and I smiled at myself.
Mom used to do this every morning before school and I always complained but now I wished so badly that she could touch my hair again and smile at me while telling me about how pretty I looked.
“Thank you” I stood up and stared at myself. I wanted to break into tears because it was my first job but mom and dad weren’t around… I wish I hadn’t run away but there’s no redemption now. How would they feel if I returned after running away without a trace?
“Let's go” Hannah led me to the dinning room where we had a silent breakfast. I raised my head up occasionally to stare around and my spirits fell when I didn’t see Sebastian around… It seemed like he had gone out early.
I finished my breakfast and Hannah decided to drop me off. According to her, she was trying to see if my work area was conducive and I couldn’t be more glad.
The drive was 20 minutes which I used to stare around, trying to master the road and signs. We stopped in front of a large glass skyscraper and my mouth dropped.
If this is where I’ll be working then it is paradise. “Wow…”
“You like it? Wait until you become a big lawyer there, you’ll have people crawling just for you to take their cases. This is where big shots are being made, this firm has made a reputation for itself and it is the most popular and powerful private firm. I present, Resolution Law Firm” Hannah announced and I was still in a daze as she led me inside.
My eyes almost popped out when I saw a guest area half-filled with people who looked affluent. I saw the receptionist who greeted Hannah with respect and after exchanging some words, Hannah walked inside.
It was surprising for Hannah to just walk in without having any appointment because I knew those people must have had appointments. We entered the elevator and Hannah pressed the second floor.
“There are four floors. The fourth is for the biggest shots. It’ll take a lot of sweat to even get to the third… Most people work here for years but are still in the first and second floors” Hannah muttered and I nodded.
Hannah must be some big shot too because she seemed to know a lot of everything that goes on here.
“Hello Courtney, this is Amanda and she will be your assistant secretary for the meantime, is Jane in?” Hannah asked.
“Good morning Ma’am, She’s not yet in but I’ll definitely inform her” Courtney replied curtly as she bowed and Hannah nodded.
“Take care of yourself. There’s nothing you can’t do! Make sure to conquer the world” She urged and I smiled before hugging her.
“Send me regards” Hannah muttered as she left and Courtney glared at me with disgust.
“Wow, seems like you weren’t able to work your way to the third floor, how sad because there’s a thousand things you can’t do and it won’t be shocking if you get fired today” Courtney muttered with a smug smile and I stared around to see that other ladies were staring at me with disgust.
It seemed like my stay here would be a hectic one but I was determined to do everything in my power to succeed. “Come rain, come sun… I’ll never give up until I make it to the fourth floor” I muttered, clenching my fist with determination.
