Convincing Raven to go to the captain have been difficult. He knew that she wanted nothing to have to do with the police, and if she hadn’t been so desperate for a safe place to go he probably never would’ve seen her again. She did admit she was going to disappear into the night and trying to leave her mistakes behind. But that wasn’t how life worked, or at least her life. The only way he knew to protect her was to make sure she had the whole law enforcement team on her side.
And that began with Captain. When Alex first brought up the idea with meeting and creating a plan Raven was vehemently against it.
“How do you expect me to walk into the police station looking for help? Weren’t you listening to all the things I’ve done? They will arrest me in a heartbeat. Of course I suppose that’s better than dying, but still I could be on a bus somewhere I just need some help. I just need help escaping.“
“Raven you can’t escape this. What’s done is done, and though I understand your story it doesn’t change the fact that you’re the only one that can help us. If you help us capture Papa and as many of the assassins as you can, then I know the captain will be willing to help. He’ll be willing to make a deal.“
Raven was still scared, she was still unsure, it was obvious to Alex. But the more he assured her they would find a way to take care of her the more she wavered and her resolve to stay away from the police. Alex comforted her and worked on her throughout the night, talking to her and comforting her, and by the time the morning came around she reluctantly agreed that she didn’t seem to have a choice. No matter where she ran if Papa was free he was going to find her. The only thing she could do was ensure that he spent the rest of his life behind bars.
Her eyes were as wide as an owl’s as he held her hand and pulled her through the police station. He knew she was terrified, he knew she felt guilty, but talking to captain and helping them correct this case going to help assuage all of those feelings. As long as the captain was on board. Because there was one thing Alex knew for certain now, if this wasn’t what was best for Raven, he didn’t think he could go through with putting her through it all. Captain had been willing to talk to the DA and the DA had to be willing to make a deal. That was where Alex drew the line. Raven had gone through enough in her life, he wanted to be assured that the rest of her life wasn’t going to be full of punishment simply because she been a lost and scared child.
When she finished her story from beginning to end just like she had for Alex night before, Captain leaned back in his chair and rubbed his eyes we are early.
“Raven that, that’s a lot to take in. On the one hand it’s clear that you would never have joined forces with Papa had you been given any other options. On the other hand I’m not quite sure I can get you off the hook for everything that’s happened.”
Captain let out a long sigh and Alex was just about ready to begin the argument that he suspected he was going to have to make. The captain held up his hand and signaled for Alex to wait.
“But because of the circumstances I think it’s safe to say that the DA is going to be able to cut you a break easily. But not just because you came in here and confess your crimes. There’s going to have to be more than that.”
Raven clenched her fists and Alex held his breath.
“I’ll give you any information you need, I’ll tell you anything. I just want to be safe. I just want to be kept alive and if possible…” Raven’s voice trailed off quietly.
Both captain and Alex watched Raven and waited for her to say something and when she didn’t continue but stared timidly down into her lap, Alex gave her his hand to squeeze.
“It’s OK,” he whispered. “If there something that you want you can ask for it.“
Captain nodded in agreement but opened his mouth to tell them that there was only so much wiggle room he’d have. “The DA will determine what kind of deal you’re going to get, I can’t promise much. The only thing I can promise is that I will do my best to help you.“
“If possible, I just want the chance to live a quiet and normal life. That’s all. It’s something I’ve never had before. If I could just disappear with a new name, a new life, I’d never do anything wrong again. I never wanted to do anything wrong in the first place. The only thing I ever wanted was to survive.“
The captain looked and Raven and he looked at Alex and he gave a small curt nod which told Alex he would do it he could. Captain was a man of his word.
There would be nothing done that day, Raven was to go back on your Alex his watch to his house, where there would be armed police waiting downstairs or his apartment just in case. The following day is when Raven would have to handle her past.
That night Alex made sure Raven was as comfortable as he could. Her fear seemed to have subsided from the night before but he could see she was still on edge. And tired. Very tired.
“Are you hungry?“ Alex asked. “We could order out or I might have some food in the fridge or freezer?”
Alex looked a little bashfully at her. “You know me,” he said with a shrug. “I sort of live the bachelor type of life.“
“I’m not that hungry, we don’t need to order out. What do you have in your freezer?”
He opened the freezer door and saw a bag of peas, ice cream that was probably past it’s prime, and two frozen pizzas. He pulled the pizzas out of the freezer and showed them to her and a smile spread across her face.
“That looks perfect,” she said.
“Why don’t you go take a hot shower while I heat the pizzas? I have some more old sweats you can change into that she be comfortable for the night. Alex was doing everything he could think of. After all, this would probably be his last night with her.
Once they got all the information on Papa, life would move fast with an arrest and a trial and he would be by her side through it all but it wouldn’t be the way a boyfriend should. It would be the way of friend would, and Alex knew that was all he could give her and that was all she would be able to except. Their lives were too tangled between good and bad, black-and-white, angels and devils. And if Raven got her wish, after the trial Alex would be gone from her life. She’d be off living some new quiet life and Alex would still be young cop in the city.
The pizzas came out of the oven with their cheese bubbling and the scent brought Raven out from the bathroom wearing only a long sweatshirt and her hair twisted in a messy knot at the top of her head.
Sexy. That was the only word to really describe Raven. And the funniest part was Alex was sure she had no idea.
“That smells amazing,” Raven said.
“You look amazing,“ Alex answered.
Raven’s cheeks pink end and Alex went to her grasping both of her hands.
“Raven, I know things between us are complicated, impossible. I lied for my career and you lied for yours, and I wish neither of us had to hurt the other. But the reason we went on for so long wasn’t because I was searching for information it was because I was searching for a way to help you. We haven’t been together long, we haven’t even known each other long. But there’s just something, something about you and about us that just feels different. Like no girl I’ve ever known before. You’re strong but your tender, you’re an unapologetic book nerd, and you have no idea how sexy you are. I know after tonight I’ll do everything I can to protect you and keep you safe and help you through everything that’s going to happen next and I’ll take any minute I can get with you as your protector or your friend or whatever you want me to be.“
“I used to think about running away from it all. That’s why I asked your captain if I could just disappear and start over and have a new life. But once I met you, somehow, even with the little we’ve known each other you made your way into my fantasies. It was no longer just me and a little place in the country, but you were there by my side. And I know you could never be with someone like me, and you’ll never be able to tell anyone you were with horrible person like myself, but if I had my choice it would be you and me in the quiet of the country.“
The two stepped towards each other, two magnets drawn together, and as their lips met, tenderness gave way to desire. As their last night together, Alex wanted to be as close to Raven as he possibly could.
Raven must have felt the same as she started to take off his shirt and expose his hard chest. She took a step back and her gaze took him all in. Eyes wide she tugged at the hem of her sweatshirt pulling it overhead, leaving her standing vulnerable in Alex’s presence. He could’ve stared at that site forever but instead he wasted no time in pulling her into his chest.
The two kissed as if they needed it to breathe, as if they needed each other to live from second to second. Their hands were on each other’s bodies, feeling and memorizing every smooth surface and playing. And when he couldn’t take it anymore and when he knew she was trembling with need Alex scooped her up and carried her to the safety of his bedroom.
As they spent the night together exploring each other’s bodies over and over, finding the tender spots, the most erotic spots, Alex knew he’d never experienced anything so perfect. Raven was everything he expected and so much more. How was he ever going to let her go? This was no crush, and it was no fling, whatever burned between Alex and Raven he knew it was real. He simply wished it didn’t have to be so short-lived.
After their fill of each other and their fill of the pizzas, Raven spent the night in his bed instead of the guest-room, wrapped tightly in Alex’s arms. He wondered when she had ever had a safer night sleep, a calmer night sleep, but Alex stayed awake all night thinking about the danger that bloomed the next day. Thinking about when he would finally have to lose her. And it left him staring at wonder if her perfect face, her tiny little nose ring, and wondering what could’ve been.
As he watched the sun come up and he knew it would be time to wake her, Alex felt so many mixtures of emotions. Fear, loss, sadness, but still felt so lucky to be the man that Raven opened up to. She stirred in his arms and he wished he didn’t have to let her go.
