*Neveah* No triage shift in the ER has ever been this intense. Injured men cover the ground as far as I can see, and I’m grateful for the setting sun, which will at least keep me from seeing how futile my efforts are every time I look up. “Take this man,” I tell the soldiers with the next liter. They’ve gone past questioning me by now and just bend down and lift him onto the cot, carrying him away. I don’t even have time to wish him well before the next man calls out to me, this one with a leg injury that makes me think about Sam again.
