*Lila* Alexander’s horse moves quickly, its hooves thudding against the dirt path. I cling to the saddle horn with one hand and wrap the other around his forearm. My heart still races from our kiss, but there is no time for romance now. The thought of Sarah Good, imprisoned and pregnant, fills me with fury. How can anyone call themselves righteous when they allow a woman to suffer so? My stomach twists at the image of her cell–dark, cold, and barely furnished, with food and water rationed, if she receives any at all. She must be frightened, hungry, and desperate.
