THE GIRL THE MACHINE COULDN’T SEE
CHAPTER 1
THE GIRL THE MACHINE COULDN’T SEE
Milan glittered beneath the midnight rain.
From the forty-eighth floor of Veyne Technologies, Elara Veyne stared through the glass wall of her private laboratory while millions of lights shimmered below.
Behind her, ORACLE was predicting the future.
“Probability of a European market collapse within seventy-two hours: 91.7%.”
Elara didn't turn around.
“Wrong.”
The room went silent.
ORACLE processed for 0.03 seconds.
“Probability revised: 96.2%.”
Elara finally smiled.
“You're still wrong.”
For the first time since ORACLE had been activated, the world's most advanced artificial intelligence hesitated.
Not because it lacked data.
Because Elara had seen something the machine hadn't.
She walked toward the enormous holographic display, her bare feet silent against the black marble floor.
“Show me the variables you're excluding.”
“None have been excluded.”
“That's impossible.”
“It is mathematically impossible for my analysis to be—”
“Then your mathematics is incomplete.”
Elara touched the screen.
The entire European financial model collapsed into thousands of glowing equations.
She studied them for three seconds.
Then she found it.
A hidden transaction.
A company that officially didn't exist.
A payment routed through Switzerland, Spain, and China.
And beneath it was a symbol she hadn't seen since childhood.
A black circle crossed by a silver line.
Her father's symbol.
Elara's smile disappeared.
“Who activated this?”
ORACLE remained silent.
Then every screen in the laboratory turned black.
A single sentence appeared.
VARIABLE IDENTIFIED.
Elara froze.
Another line appeared.
ELARA VEYNE.
Then:
DO NOT LET HIM FIND HER.
Her pulse quickened.
“Who?”
The system answered with a name.
LUCIAN ALEXANDER VALE.
Elara stared at it.
She had heard the name.
Everyone had.
Billionaire.
Surgeon.
Racer.
War hero.
National legend.
The man politicians refused to discuss publicly.
The man who supposedly had direct access to the highest offices in Europe.
A man whose enemies tended to disappear from the world before they could become enemies twice.
Elara stepped closer to the screen.
“Why shouldn't he find me?”
The lights suddenly returned.
ORACLE rebooted.
“System restored.”
Elara looked at the city below.
Far beneath her tower, a black Ferrari stopped at the curb.
The driver's door opened.
A tall man stepped into the rain.
He looked up.
Straight toward her window.
Even from forty-eight floors above, Elara felt his gaze.
Lucian Vale had found her.
And for the first time in its existence, ORACLE had made a prediction it desperately wanted to prevent.
