CHAPTER 3
THE CHASE
Darkness swallowed the laboratory.
Elara heard the click of a weapon being loaded.
Then another.
“Stay behind me,” Lucian said.
She almost laughed.
“Absolutely not.”
“That's not a request.”
“And you're not my commander.”
A muzzle flashed.
Lucian moved first.
Two shots cracked through the darkness.
A body hit the floor.
Elara reached beneath her desk and pulled out a small metal device.
She pressed a button.
Emergency lights flickered on.
Six armed men stood between them and the elevator.
Lucian glanced at her device.
“What is that?”
“My way out.”
She pressed another button.
Every security door in the building slammed shut.
The men suddenly found themselves trapped.
Lucian looked at her.
“You planned this?”
“I planned for people smarter than them.”
A faint smile touched his lips.
It was the first expression she had seen on his face that wasn't completely controlled.
“Interesting.”
“Don't sound so surprised.”
“I've met intelligent women.”
“Have you met me?”
His eyes held hers for a moment longer than necessary.
“No.”
The building shook.
Elara's expression changed.
“That wasn't part of my plan.”
Lucian immediately reached for his phone.
An explosion erupted somewhere below.
The lights disappeared again.
Smoke began rising through the ventilation system.
“Someone is destroying the building,” Lucian said.
“Why?”
“To erase whatever they're looking for.”
Elara's stomach tightened.
“My father's research.”
Lucian looked at her sharply.
“You know about it?”
“Not enough.”
Another explosion rocked the tower.
Lucian grabbed her hand.
“Come with me.”
Elara looked down at his fingers around hers.
Strong.
Warm.
Steady.
She should have pulled away.
Instead, she followed.
They reached the underground parking garage as alarms screamed overhead.
A black Ferrari waited beneath the emergency lights.
Elara stopped.
“You brought that?”
“Yes.”
She looked at him suspiciously.
“You're kidnapping me.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“Saving you.”
“What's the difference?”
Lucian opened the passenger door.
“Kidnapping means I don't give you a choice.”
Elara folded her arms.
“And?”
He looked directly into her eyes.
“You're free to stay here and die.”
She stared at him.
Then smiled.
“Move.”
Lucian raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
“I'm driving.”
For the first time, the legendary Lucian Vale looked genuinely surprised.
Elara slid into the driver's seat.
He got in beside her.
The engine roared.
Behind them, Veyne Technologies disappeared beneath a cloud of smoke.
Ahead lay the streets of Milan.
And somewhere in the darkness, someone was already waiting for them.
