7. An Experiment

Aryanna’s POV: “There’s not going to be enough onions and carrot for the meal. Aryanna, I think you should rush down to the market and get some before the Luna comes down here to supervise things and finds that you flopped again.” Emilia said, her voice condescending. I dropped the knife that I had been slicing with and turned to face her. Not surprised to find her perched on a stool reading through a book. We were all supposed to be working, but Emilia had claimed that she had been giving the very ‘tedious task’ of going to the market and that she wasn’t obligated to join us in cooking anymore. How come she wanted me to go to the market, when she had failed to buy the correct amount of things we’d be needing? “Why do I have to go to the market? It was your task to go to the market. That’s why you’re not working in the first place, so if there’s a shortage of anything you should go get it.” I argued, folding my arms across my chest to try and appear bigger. I knew it was useless, my size was a curse in disguise. Everyone was bigger than me, male or female, Alpha or omega. So it didn’t matter if I tried to puff three times my size, I’d still be small. “Well, you can try to explain that to the Luna when she gets here and we all tell her it was your responsibility to go to the market. It’ll be your word against ours and I don’t think I need to tell you whose word would win.” Emilia responded and tears began gathering in my eyes. “It’s not fair.” “Just quit whining and go get the damn vegetables Aryanna. You could have been half way there if you had left the moment it was mentioned.” Bianca said, and I could hear the irritation in her voice. Sighing heavily, I sniffed once, blinking rapidly to stop the tears that were threatening to fall from my eyes, before taking off the apron and making my way out of the kitchen. My entire body felt so weak and since I had been up really early and had been made to do every single chore. I didn’t get the luxury of a single assignment and so I had moved from place to place through out the day and I could feel my muscles screaming from all the strain. The Alpha’s were around and the very important summit that had been the topic of discussion over the last couple of days was finally here, but my hopes of been left alone and having all the officials be out for the day had been vain. Only the Alpha and Beta had gone for the meeting. The Luna had stayed back to supervise the cooking and the preparations for the feast that was supposed to take place later in the evening. I made my way quickly towards the pack market and I felt grateful to be outside when I realized that the streets were empty. Majority of the pack members were either volunteering to prepare for the feast or inside their homes, as per the instructions of Alpha Harley. So there was no weird pointing at me or harsh whispers or the occasional thing been thrown at me. I had the freedom to walk around the pack once again like I belonged here. I didn’t have to hide my face or run to protect myself. I could enjoy the breeze on my face and the birds singing around me, but I knew I had to hurry and so I did so making my way to the market, getting the items I needed and hurrying back quickly. I was too carried away with how peaceful it was to be walking the empty streets that I forgot to pay attention, an action I regretted when I bumped into someone. The items that I had just purchased rolled out of the basket and I quickly bent to gather them before the rolled too far. When I heard the person speak, I recoiled a bit, expecting them to hit me while calling me out on my clumsiness and my lack of attention, but neither of that happened and when I heard an apology, a shiver ran up my spine. It had been so long since anyone had apologized to me. That was my job now and I apologized to people even when I wasn’t wrong. But that wasn’t the only reason for the shiver and the goosebumps that were currently forming on my skin. That voice. I knew that whoever it was, wasn’t from this pack. They would have never shown me a single kindness and that voice wasn’t one that I recognized. I quickly went my way the moment I had gathered all my items and once I had put a distance between myself and the stranger, I let myself turn back to hopefully get a glimpse of his back at least. But that had been a wrong decision, because he were still stood in place watching me and when he locked eyes with mine, panic surged through my frame. I watched as his lips moved and his brows furrowed, I couldn’t hear what he had said but then he began moving towards me, instead of away from me. I didn’t wait to listen to whatever he had to say. Holding on tightly to my basket, I began running as fast as I could. Running was one thing I knew my wolf and myself could always do well. My small stature made it easy for me to move and the current adrenaline I felt from the panic of the situation fueled my movements even more. “Hey, wait! Come back. I’m not trying to hurt you, I just want to talk to you.” He called, but I didn’t stop to listen to whatever he had to say and I ran all the way to the pack house. He must have stopped chasing me at some point, because I knew that if he really wanted to catch up with me then he would but even after I stopped hearing his footsteps I didn’t stop. “Why do you look like you were chased?” Bianca asked with surprise as I came into the kitchen and deposited the items on the island. I was panting heavily and I could feel the sweat dripping down my back. “Don’t even answer that, I don’t think I want to know. The Luna needs you and she’s been here three times to look for you and she’s pissed, so I suggest you wipe your sweaty forehead and go find her in her room.” Bianca delivered and I sighed heavily. Here we go again. But I did as the other maid advised and went in search of the Luna. I was about to knock on her door when I heard heated voices from within. My bad habit of eavesdropping kicked in and although I knew not to do it, I couldn’t help it when I pressed my ears against the door hoping to hear the conversation within. “Mom, it’s not fair! She’s just a stupid omega wolf why does she get to go with him.” That was Lisa’s voice. What was she so upset about? “Yes love. She’s going as a slave, it’s nothing you have to worry about, once your father is able to build a good friendship for us then you can go over as Alpha Ian’s new bride. Just think of it as Aryanna, opening the way for you.” The Luna explained. “That’s the problem, I don’t want her doing that. Why can’t I just go myself?” “Patience love. It’ll all come together, I promise you. Just trust your father and I. We will give Aryanna over to the Alpha King as his slave, just to test how open he is to receiving gifts of certain sorts. You don’t want him to reject you outrightly now do you? Let her be the scape goat, the experiment and then you can be finished result.” I heard the Luna say And my heart dropped into my stomach.
