Ash & Moonfire Chapter One: The Wrong Bride Episode
The scent hit Kael Ashborn before the girl even stepped through the pack house doors — and it was wrong.
Every Alpha knew his mate's scent the way he knew his own heartbeat. His father had told him it would smell like home, like the first snow after a long summer, like something his wolf had been starving for without knowing it had a name. What walked toward him now smelled like *smoke and iron*. Like a fight not yet finished.
"Luna Serah of the Hallow Pine pack," the herald announced, and the room fell silent enough that Kael heard his own wolf snarl low in his chest.
She didn't curtsy. She didn't lower her eyes the way every omega and beta in that hall had been taught since birth. She looked straight at him, chin high, and said, "You're smaller than the stories."
A ripple of scandalized breath moved through the Great Hall. Kael's Beta, Dorian, actually choked on his own spit.
Kael almost laughed. Almost.
"And you're late for your own wedding," he said instead, voice flat as a blade. "Three years late, if the treaty is to be believed."
"The treaty," Serah said, "didn't ask what I wanted. It rarely does."
That was the moment he should have known something was already unraveling — not because of her insolence, but because of the *silence underneath it*. A mate bond, even an unwilling one, hummed. His did not. It sat in his chest like a held breath, waiting.
---
The marriage happened at moonrise, as pack law demanded. Vows were spoken. Wrists were cut and pressed together over the ceremonial fire, the old way, the way that was supposed to seal a bond so deep that death was the only door out of it.
Kael felt the cut. He felt the fire's heat. He did not feel *her*.
No warmth crawled up his arm. No claiming pull settled behind his ribs. Nothing.
He kept his face still. A Luna binding ceremony did not fail — not in four hundred years of Ashborn pack history. If word got out that the bond hadn't taken, half the Alphas in the Northern Territories would smell weakness and come calling with steel instead of treaties.
So when his Beta murmured, low enough for wolves only, *"Alpha — do you feel it?"*, Kael answered the only way he could.
"Of course I do."
He looked at Dorian's face and saw the flicker of doubt there anyway. Dorian had known him since they were pups fighting over the last piece of venison. Dorian, of all people, would know he was lying.
---
That night, in the Luna's chambers that had sat untouched and dustless for six years — kept ready since his mother died, as if hope alone could summon a mate — Serah stood at the window with her arms crossed, still in her wedding silks, refusing to sit on the bed like it might bite her.
"You didn't feel it either," she said. Not a question.
Kael's jaw tightened. "Careful what you say out loud in this house."
"I'm not stupid, Alpha." She said his title like an insult. "I've been trained since I was six to recognize a real bond. My grandmother had one. My parents had one. Whatever *that* was at the fire — it wasn't that."
"Then why," Kael said, crossing the room until he stood close enough to see her pulse jump in her throat, close enough that the smoke-and-iron scent should have meant *something* if the goddess had any mercy left in her at all, "did Hallow Pine send you three years late, with no explanation, and a scent that isn't yours?"
Serah went very still.
"What did you say?"
"I said your scent is wrong." Kael's wolf rose behind his eyes, sharp and suspicious now. "A Hallow Pine wolf smells of cedar and river stone. I fought your cousin at the border summit two winters back — I know what your bloodline smells like. You don't smell like Hallow Pine, Serah. You don't smell like *any* pack I've traded with."
For the first time since she'd walked through his doors like she owned them, something cracked in her composure — not fear, exactly. Calculation. The look of someone watching a carefully built lie start to slide.
"I can explain," she said.
"Then explain."
She opened her mouth.
And that was the exact moment the window behind her shattered inward, and the real Luna Serah of Hallow Pine — bound, bloodied, and screaming her own name — was thrown across the floor at Kael's feet.
