Ethan Cole was nobody at Hale Technologies until one breakthrough changed everything.

After helping solve a major problem that could have cost the company millions, Ethan is unexpectedly promoted and brought directly under the attention of Victoria Hale, the company's powerful CEO.

Their new working relationship takes an unexpected turn when they uncover a secret buried inside Hale Technologies for five years. As Ethan and Victoria begin working closely to uncover the truth, late meetings and private investigations fuel rumors that the two are having an affair.

Before Ethan can explain himself, the rumor reaches the media.

And Maya, the woman he loves, hears about it from the news.

What begins as a rumor soon threatens Ethan's career, his relationship, and his reputation.

But the real danger comes later, when Victoria's feelings for Ethan become genuine and she wants something he refuses to give her.

When Ethan rejects her, the situation turns into something far more dangerous than office gossip.

A picture becomes evidence.

A lie becomes an accusation.

And the man who once fought so hard to prove himself must now fight to prove that he is innocent.

But while Ethan struggles to clear his name, the secret from five years ago is still waiting to be uncovered.

Who is really behind his downfall?

And how much will Ethan have to lose before the truth finally comes out?

1. Invisible man.
Ethan Cole stared at the blinking error messages flooding across his monitor while the rest of the office slowly emptied for the night. Outside the glass walls of Hale Technologies, New York glowed like a city built for rich people and impossible dreams. Inside the twenty-third floor, only the soft hum of computers remained. And Ethan was still working. Again. He rubbed his tired eyes and checked the time at the bottom of his screen. 9:47 PM. A bitter laugh almost escaped him. Twelve hours in the office. No dinner. Three cups of burnt coffee. And tomorrow morning his supervisor would probably still complain that he was “too slow.” The sound of expensive shoes clicking against the polished floor echoed behind him. Ethan already knew who it was before the voice came. “You’re still here?” Ryan Parker stopped beside Ethan’s desk with one hand inside the pocket of his tailored coat. Even at this hour, Ryan looked polished and relaxed, like someone who had never struggled a single day in his life. Unlike Ethan. “Trying to finish the server migration,” Ethan answered quietly without looking away from the screen. Ryan smirked. “You mean the project you volunteered for because you’re desperate for attention?” Ethan ignored him. Most people at Hale Technologies enjoyed talking down to him because he never fought back. They mistook silence for weakness. Maybe they were right. Ryan leaned against the desk and glanced at Ethan’s old wristwatch. “You know,” he said casually, “if you spent less time pretending to be the company hero and more time learning how real executives think, maybe you wouldn’t still be sitting in this depressing corner.” Ethan’s jaw tightened slightly. The depressing corner. That was what employees secretly called the small workstation near the server room where Ethan had spent almost five years working invisible overtime while richer employees climbed over him. Ryan straightened his coat. “Anyway, don’t stay too late. The cleaning staff gets nervous when they see people who look homeless wandering around after midnight.” He walked away laughing softly at his own joke. Two nearby employees laughed with him before following him toward the elevators. Ethan remained still until the sound disappeared completely. Then he exhaled slowly and looked back at the screen. He should have been angry. Instead, he just felt tired. The truth was Ryan wasn’t entirely wrong. Ethan looked terrible lately. Dark circles sat permanently beneath his eyes. His white office shirt had lost its sharpness hours ago. Even his shoulders ached from sitting too long. Five years. Five years inside Hale Technologies. Five years believing hard work would eventually matter. Yet somehow he still felt stuck in the exact same place. A quiet vibration interrupted his thoughts. His phone lit up beside the keyboard. Maya. The tension in his heart softened slightly when he saw her name. He answered immediately. “Hey.” “You’re still at work, aren’t you?” Maya’s voice came softly through the speaker. Ethan leaned back in his chair. “Just finishing something.” “You said that three hours ago.” “I know.” There was a pause. Not an angry pause. A disappointing one. Somehow those hurt more. “You missed dinner again,” Maya said quietly. Guilt twisted inside him. He closed his eyes briefly. “I’m sorry.” “You keep saying sorry, Ethan.” He had no response to that. In the silence between them, Ethan could hear television noise from their apartment. Their tiny apartment. The one with leaking pipes and unstable heating that Ethan kept promising he would replace someday. When things got better. If things got better. Maya sighed softly. “Did you at least eat something?” “Coffee counts.” “That’s not funny.” “I know.” Ethan stared at the glowing city outside the window. He hated this feeling. The feeling that he was slowly failing her. Maya had married him when he had nothing except ambition and impossible promises. Back then, they used to joke about surviving together until life finally rewarded them. But lately survival was becoming exhausting. “I’ll be home soon,” Ethan said finally. “You always say that too.” Before he could answer, the lights above him flickered once. Then twice. Ethan frowned and looked back at his monitor. Lines of code suddenly froze. The screen glitched violently. A warning notification flashed red across the system. CRITICAL SERVER FAILURE DETECTED Ethan sat upright immediately. “What happened?” Maya asked through the phone after hearing the sudden movement. “One second.” Another alert exploded across the monitor. Then another. And another. Within seconds, emergency notifications flooded every active system window. As emergency alarms echoed through the building and executives rushed onto the operations floor, Ethan stared at the collapsing system map with one terrifying realization.
