Chapter 1
The evening breeze carried the distinct scent of street food and city lights as I hurried through the crowded streets of New York City. It was one of those cold nights that left you with frostbite yet warmed your heart with the promise of something greater. I had grown used to this city, with its relentless pace, towering skyscrapers, and the constant buzz of purpose and dreams. In a few hours, I would be attending a glamorous gala at The Hayes penthouse. It was a world so different from my own, where I'd grown up in a small, modest apartment with my parents and two younger siblings depending on me to provide for them. Now, I was dating one of New York's most eligible bachelors, Wyatt, whose family owned Hayes Enterprises. The invitation to this high-society event was Wyatt's way of showing me off. As we approached the grand entrance to his Parent's penthouse, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe mixed with a touch of insecurity. He came from a world of luxury, and I didn't want to be the one who didn't fit in. Wyatt, tall and confident, exuded his usual charm. "You look stunning tonight, Avery," he said, offering me his arm. I smiled, grateful for the compliment. "You're not too bad yourself." It was one of those rare moments when I could let go and enjoy the enchantment of Wyatt's world. The penthouse was a dazzling sight, adorned with crystal chandeliers, art, and the unmistakable aura of wealth. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as we mingled with the city's elite. But amidst the luxury, I couldn't help but notice the subtle, judgmental glances from Wyatt's colleagues. With forced grins engraved upon their faces, their eyes betrayed the façade, revealing the depths of their genuine emotions. At that moment, the unspoken words echoed louder than any spoken ones: "You don’t belong here." What gave them the right to look at me like that? I deserved this. In an instant, my chest tightened, the unease settling in. Not here, I thought desperately. I had to maintain my composure for Wyatt's sake, but the struggle was intensifying. It seemed as though each breath was escaping my grasp. the room spun around me. The world seemed to close in, and it was as if I was drowning in my own fear. But then, I locked eyes with him, and it was like a lifeline in a stormy sea, his blue eyes a calming anchor that steadied my turbulent emotions. "Come on, let's go see Mum and Dad," Wyatt beamed, his enthusiasm contagious. I nodded, a gentle smile on my lips, as he took my hands, and together, we strolled toward his parents. Amid the bustling crowd, Logan and Vivian stood as radiant beacons, deriving an aura of confidence and charm unique to the Hayes. As we drew nearer, Vivian's keen eyes caught sight of me, and she hastened over with a big hug. Her beauty struck me, and I couldn't help but admire her as she spoke. "Oh, Avery, I'm so glad you could make it." Grateful for the invitation, I replied, "Thank you for having me. This is a truly lovely party. “ At that moment, Mr. Hayes joined his wife, his arm wrapped affectionately around her waist. He teased, "You should've seen the bill.” Vivian playfully swatted his chest, her laughter filling the air. Their love was an evidence that love still existed. I couldn't help but wonder if Wyatt and I might one day share such a bond. The mere thought of it sent butterflies fluttering in my stomach and brought a blush to my cheeks. Wyatt cleared his throat, successfully redirecting everyone's attention towards him. With graceful steps, Vivian approached her son, planting a kiss on his cheek and offering a warm hug. Wyatt teased, "Thought I was forgotten.” Vivian chuckled, her eyes twinkling. "Well, you can't blame us. When Avery's here, it's easy to forget you even exist. Wyatt jokingly feigned offense, placing a hand over his heart. "Ouch, Mother.” He then turned his attention to Avery. "What did you do to bewitch her?” I grinned playfully, replying, "It's our little secret.” Our exchange was suddenly interrupted by Mr. Hayes, who interjected, "Good to see you, son. Aiden responded, "Hello, Father.” It was a brief conversation, but an underlying tension lingered, noticeable to those attuned to it. "Last I checked, Harris Enterprises just acquired a 25% stake in Big Tech. What's your take on that, Wyatt?" Mr. Hayes inquired unexpectedly. Wyatt’s demeanor shifted subtly, and though he maintained his composure, a trace of unease flickered in his eyes, perceptible none but me. Vivian swiftly intervened, her warm smile unwavering. "Logan, this isn't the office. Why don't we let these lovebirds enjoy their time? And you, Mr. Hayes, come have a dance with your wife." With that, she guided Logan away from the conversation. "Are you o..." I began to ask, but Wyatt interrupted with a bright smile. "Well, I'm glad that's over." He then sweetly asked, "Care to dance?" Taking my hand, he led me to the dance floor. Wyatt moved gracefully, and as we danced, it felt like a wonderful moment. I gazed into his beautiful blue eyes, and everything seemed just right.I couldn't help but think about how much my life had changed. This world was both exciting and overwhelming, like a balancing act. I needed to prove to myself, to Wyatt, and to anyone who questioned it, that I belonged here just like anyone else.
