Episode 12

"I hope I'm not going to regret this," I whisper to myself as I hold Matt's hand and lead him inside the luxurious looking store. Soon as we enter a sales man in an expensive looking outfit approaches us wearing an unwelcoming expression on his face as if we are people who just walked in to a party they were not invited to. "Are you guys lost?" He dares to ask. I stare at him with disbelief and I can't find the words to respond to his rude question. He should be fired for being so rude to customers, he is clearly judging us as poor based on our appearance. "Perhaps you would like to ask for directions?" He adds, after I fail to respond. "No...my young brother needs a new pair of running shoes," I state. I watch as his eyebrows cave in with something that looks like bewilderement. "The shoes we have start from $200," he informs, not moving his eyes away from me, so as to see my reaction. "What! $200! Are the shoes made of silver and gold?" I gape at him. "I knew we couldn't afford buying the shoes here, maybe we should just go to the outlet market," Matt suggests with disappointment. "Okay Matt we will go but we are allowed to look around even though we won't be buying anything," I mutter while keeping my eye on the sales person anticipating him to protest but he doesn't. We roam around the store viewing and touching other goods that are on display for sale. The sales person keeps throwing a disapproving eye our way, he would rather we be out of the shop but we are not in a rush. "One day I'm going to come here and buy you the shoes you want Matt," I wistfully say. He peers up at me and smiles, I can see that he does not believe that day will ever come. The minute I turn around to face the door, ready to leave with Matt I'm startled to see doctor Greenfield walking with a beautiful young woman and a little girl whom I quickly assume to be their child. First thing I think of is hiding, my heart is kind of broken to see him with another woman. I had hoped just maybe something could happen between us but now its clear it cant happen and not even in my dreams. I crouch down and try to cover myself with the tall display tables nearby. The annoying sales person spots me immediately and comes marching my way, "what do you think you are doing hiding here Ms...are you trying to steal from us?" He scoffs at me while roughly pulling me up to my feet. Everyone's eyes have now been turned on me and I have never been so embarrased my whole life. I wish I could just disappear into thin air than to stand all the judgemental and laughing eyes fixed on me. It takes a moment for Greenfield to recognise the girl being embarrased is no one else but me. After noticing me he leaves the people he is with behind and paces over to me. "What seems to be the problem here sir? Why are you grabbing her like that?" He questions. "She was trying to steal something," the sales person answers. My mouth drops open with astonishment, how dare he say that when that is far from being true. "He is lying...I wasn't trying to steal anything I am not a thief," I angrily shout. "Yes, she is telling the truth, she only crouched down to hide from this man," Matt blurts, his finger pointed at Greenfield. Great! As if I'm not embarrased enough, Matt had to say something like that. Why couldn't he just keep quiet? There is a look of bewilderement on Greenfield's face, I pray he will not believe the words Matt just uttered or ask me anything concerning that. "Please let her go," he demands and the sales person gives me an eye before releasing me and walking away. I can barely bring myself to meet Greenfield's eyes, why should I bother admiring how good he looks when it has been made obvious that he is taken. "I wasn't expecting to see you here Rebecca, are you alright?" He asks. "I wasn't expecting to see you either," I mutter. "You should call me sometime, I would love to take you out for dinner and make you forget about all the things that are troubling you," he simpers. I gaze at him with shock, how can he be busy flirting with me and asking me out when his wife and child are standing across waiting for him. "Is your wife going to be okay with that?" I ask in a sarcastic way. "My wife?" He looks genuinley puzzled but it doesn't take him long to realise that I'm referring to the woman he walked in with. He snaps his finger to get their attention and then he waves them over. "This is my sister Tiffany and her daughter Mia," he introduces, leaving me feeling like a too forward fool. "Oh...I had no idea...I thought she was your wife," I laugh softly. Tiffany is displeased with the look of interest that her brother is giving me. She has already disapproved of me, I can tell by the assesing glances she keeps throwing at me. Greenfield informs me that he promised to buy his niece new shoes that is why they are all together at the mall. I try to bid goodbye but he asks me why I'm now leaving without buying what I came for. Isn't it quite obvious that I can't afford the ridiculous prices at the shop? "The shoes are too expensive," Matt says with a sullen face. Greenfield shocks me when he offers to pay for Matt's shoes, Matt is excited over it but I just feel I can't expect his request, it is too much. "Please say yes Becca" Matt peers at me with imploring eyes.
